Welcome to in the news for spooky Friday, September 13th, 2024.

I am Brett Burney from Appsinlaw.com.

And this is Jeff Richardson from iPhone JD who got stung by Friday the 13th this morning.

That's why I had this morning.

We got to hear that.

We might as well jump right in.

Today's the day you can preorder a new iPhone, right, Brett?

So as of five o'clock Pacific time, which was a much more reasonable seven o'clock time this morning for me, I went to go preorder it and I'm using the Apple store app and it just was not working.

It was not working.

And I'll tell you, I had a sense that this might happen because yesterday Apple had this thing that they've done something similar in the past, which was a good idea, which was, although you can't actually enter a preorder into a specific day, what they will let you do is go into the Apple store a day or two early and sort of like choose what size and color like get everything ready.

Right.

So it was a process that looked very nice, you know, pre preorder.

Right.

So select this, select that.

And then when I got to the last step of it is, okay, now, now tell us how you're going to pay when you actually do your preorder.

All right.

It just kept spinning and spinning and spinning and spinning.

So you know, whatever it was yesterday.

I figured whatever, they'll get it all worked out Friday the 13th.

Well, so they did not.

So this morning when the orders, when you know, the store is supposed to go live at seven o'clock central, it doesn't come up.

It doesn't come up.

It finally does come up, but 10 minutes later, meanwhile, I had, I had been like reloading the app.

You know how you do that, like force quit it and try to reload it.

So I finally get it up.

And once again, I select all the stuff that I want.

And when I go to pay, it just spins and spins.

And so it took me about 40 minutes.

I mean, it got to be so ridiculous that I actually went and took a shower.

I'd be throwing things at my phone.

It was ridiculous.

And so I finally, I could not order in the shower, but not order at all through the app.

I ended up ordering on the website in Safari on my iPhone and that went through.

But by the time I put my order in, they said that if we deliver it to you at your office next Friday, well, we can't be next Friday.

The soonest we could get it to you is October 2nd, which I guess would be like, what, the next week.

And so I'm like, no, I don't want that.

And so then I said, well, what if I pick it up at the Apple store here in the New Orleans area, Apple store, Lakeside, New Meadery.

And they're like, oh yeah, we can do that on the 20th.

I'm like, okay, that's fine.

But the irony is I also pre-ordered an Apple watch earlier this week, which we're going to get to.

And I tried to pick that one up at the store.

That's what I wanted to do.

I said, let me just pick the store that way.

I don't have to worry about it not coming here.

Apple would not let me do it.

They literally would not let me do it.

They said, your only choice is for me to deliver it to you.

So long story short, a week from today in my office, I will receive an Apple watch and then I got to get in my car and then drive to the Apple store to get that phone.

It's just crazy.

But anyway, now why in the world is Jeff talking about getting an iPhone and an Apple watch?

Some of you may be wondering, well, it just so happened that a few days ago, Apple had an announcement on Monday, this past Monday, which was a little odd because it was on a Monday, not usually a Tuesday.

Apple's glow time event and boy, Heidi, we've got a lot of stuff to cover on that.

But now you know why Jeff was taking his phone in the shower to try to reload the site, to try to preorder an iPhone, pre-order an iPhone.

Wow.

That's going to be quite a day next week, Jeff, where you're going to be going back and forth.

I wish, you know, maybe the UPS guy could meet you halfway or something like that.

I don't know.

Like if you can work something out on there.

But that is exciting.

A brand new iPhone, brand new Apple watch for Jeff coming.

We'll be talking about that next week for sure.

Maybe it'll come while we're on the air.

That would even be more fun on there.

But boy, what a lot of announcements came out this past week.

Although I got to tell you, I'll give you a, I'll just give a little flavor.

I'm not quite as excited on this particular announcement.

There's a lot of good stuff.

Don't get me wrong.

You know, I like it, but I'm interested to hear what you have to say.

Why don't we start with the iPhone?

You already posted a fantastic article, Jeff, on why lawyers will love the new iPhone 16 models.

Your particular audience on iPhone JD is particular to lawyers.

But what I love about your articles all the time is that it can apply to any professional in any organization, any profession in the world.

And it was a good walk down here because we did get a new iPhone 16 and the new iPhone 16 pro models as well.

Yeah, I have heard others say the same thing as you and we're going to circle around to that at the end.

I'm just saying that, oh, this year's upgrade is, you know, just a whatever upgrade, not too exciting.

Maybe it's just because I'm more of a glass half full person or maybe it's because of my, of all the things I love to do with the Apple, with the, with the iPhone, excuse me, taking pictures is always been one of my favorite things, pictures and videos.

And so maybe that's why it jumps out at two, but I was actually, you know, obviously the iPhone has been around for a really long time.

How many times can you know, how many revolutionary things can you come up to on a device that's at number 16?

You got to have some room.

So with that in mind, you know, the things that people really enjoy using it for a big one is the camera.

And so if you know, absolutely one of the big changes, certainly the most notable change for the, for the look of this year's model versus prior years is that they have a new button and it's interesting to me because for many years Apple was trying to reduce buttons, right?

You know, get rid of the front and everything else.

And it seems like they was, you know, dwindling buttons.

But then last year they came out with the action button just on the high end pro models.

This year, the action button is on all the iPhone 16 models.

Plus you get an additional one if this new cap, this new camera control button.

And so as I understand it, you know, right on the iPhone, there's going to be a button right here that it's going to be unlike the action button, which you just press.

That's all you do with it.

This is going to be a sophisticated button.

It's going to be a little bit longer and you can, if you start to press it, it will just sense that you're about to press it.

It won't actually push anything in, but by sensing the pressure on it, it will be like a half click.

And anyone who's used like a digital SLR camera knows what that is.

When you sort of half press the button, it starts to focus on it so that by the time you actually click it, everything's in focus when you take the picture.

And so when you have click here, it's going to be even more powerful.

You can do what I just talked about focusing, or you can slide back and forth and you're showing a great picture of it right now on the screen.

Yeah, people watching the video that you can slide back and forth and adjust a whole host of things.

You can adjust zoom, you know, which is an obvious one, but you can also pull up a little menu and you can adjust, you know, filters and all sorts of other little fidgety details of the camera, things that used to require pressing all the buttons in the bottom.

And I guess you could still do that, but you'll be able to access that just from your finger.

And then once you're ready to go, you press the rest of the way.

And then it is actually, it's a physical button.

This is not a fake button.

This is a real button that you will actually press in to take the picture.

What I like about it is, first of all, if something happens in the world that you just want to take a picture, there's nothing faster than just picking up your phone and pressing a button.

You don't have to worry about launching the app.

I mean, the button, you just do it all.

That's just one button to do it all, which is so much faster.

So you're more likely to capture that moment before it's gone.

You know, if you see something really cool, like look at that bird or something like that.

So that's really cool.

And also I have long liked using a button to take pictures.

I have been using, you know, you could use the volume button for many years now on the phone to take pictures.

And I've long liked that feature.

So this will be similar, except it's going to be more powerful because it's not just the button.

It's actually some controls with the slide back and forth.

So again, we'll have to try it to see it, but I'm excited about this.

And one of the people that I linked to in today's post was Jason Snell, who we always follow at Six Colors.

He was actually at that Apple event on Monday, Brett.

And he said he had a chance to try it.

And he thought that, you know, this is what the headline says at all.

It's a throwback feature to what Apple does best, you know, come out with a really good hardware.

Like everything about it is very feature rich.

It's a satisfactory click.

It feels good.

It makes sense.

It does something powerful.

So this is the thing that I perhaps I'm looking forward to the most.

And it's nice that it comes to all the models.

This is not an advanced camera feature that requires the pro.

You can just get the quote unquote entry level iPhone 16 and you still get this feature.

So I'm excited about it.

So I have more to say about this new phone.

But just in terms of the action button and control button, you have thoughts before we move on to other stuff?

The couple of things we talked about this last week that the rumor mill was saying that there was going to be an extra button.

I don't remember in the entire what was like an hour and a half presentation on Monday, right?

That they actually ever called this a button per se.

Maybe they did.

I don't know.

I just noticed it.

But I just noticed that they called it camera control all the time.

So in other words, it's almost like they're not admitting that it's an extra button.

But on the other hand, it is physical.

Now the reason that I don't want to take them to task too much for that Jeff is because the way I've heard people talk about this and the way it was explained is I almost think of it as like a teeny tiny little trackpad built in to the side of the phone.

Because you know, the way in fact, I think you probably listen to Jason Snell on the Mac break weekly podcast as well.

He was talking about when he was touching this, it feels similar to those of us that have been using a Mac or even to some extent, maybe a little bit of like the iPad keyboard.

But on Macs today, MacBook Airs, MacBook Pros, we have had a trackpad that is really not physical.

But when you click it, it feels physical.

In other words, it's basically it's tricks that are playing.

It's what we call the haptic engine, if that makes sense.

In other words, you don't have to have it actually feel like a click.

But I do because I'm used to the old mouse buttons and trackpads that feel like click buttons.

And so I also on my MacBook Pro can tap just a little bit.

I can actually just tap the trackpad or I can press down hard on the trackpad.

And if I press down hard, that will actually click and allow me to drag a box around, you know, a window on the Mac.

The point that I'm getting to is this to me sounds more like a little trackpad than an actual just a functional button, even though it sounds like it can work like a button, exactly what you were describing, Jeff.

But it can do more, right?

I can slide my finger back and forth and we can check these different things.

And I think this is this is more revolutionary than probably what people I think are aware of.

And all of that to say, we thought it was just going to be a simple button.

It's much more than that.

And the fact that it's dedicated only to the camera, like it's not going to be available to do other things and other apps other than maybe some other photo centric apps like I think they showed off Snapchat.

Right.

Or maybe Allied and other photo apps that will that will be able to take advantage of this.

But it is a dedicated button, dedicated trackpad for the iPhone just for photography reasons.

I just take a picture.

You can also hold it down.

I think it takes a video, right?

Like it's all photo related type things to the point where there is dedicated hardware.

Now a cut out trackpad, whatever we want to call it on the iPhone, that the iPhone is really now an eye camera that can also make phone calls.

I mean, it just seems like this is really where Apple is going, because the last point that I'll make is you said this.

There are already hardware options or quick access options for the photos on iPhones.

If you on your lock screen, we all had that little camera icon in the bottom right corner.

You could tap on that and you don't even have to unlock the phone and you can get access to the camera.

I've done that a lot, but it does seem a little clunky.

You could use the volume button to actually want to unlock the camera, go into the camera app.

But then some people could change that action button on the iPhone 15 pro to go straight to the camera.

And it just seems weird that we already had these options, but apparently either no one was using them correctly or Apple just wanted to double down on the fact that here's an eye camera and you can also make phone calls on it.

Yeah, let's make it even better because I have my action button is like during the day my action button does.

You mentioned that.

Yeah.

Now at night I have it controlling some lights in my house.

So but no, I love that Apple has recognized, I mean you made the joke of being an eye camera.

The reality is that the word phone takes up all but one of the letters of the name iPhone, everything but the eye.

And yet we all know that the actual talking in the phone feature is one of the least important things I do with the phone.

I do do that, but I use it as a camera and internet communicator and everything else more and more.

So it is really interesting that with the dedicated capture button, the camera control button or just camera control, I guess maybe they don't use the word button.

You're probably right about that.

Camera control, that's right.

It's going to make it even faster to use it.

It's going to be more powerful.

It seems like the best of Apple.

And I think this is what Jason was getting to because on the one hand it can be powerful if you want.

You can slide back and forth.

Yes, right.

You're absolutely right to call it like a track pad.

You can access all the fiddly controls or you could just press it down and take a picture or hold it down and take a video.

And it's the one button that only does that.

It will never do anything else.

It is nice that Apple allows third party camera apps to use it as well.

So it's not that you have to use the Apple app.

I would have expected that's the sort of thing that you would think like in year one, it's only the Apple app.

And then in year two, they open it up to third party apps.

But no, from the beginning, Apple is opening up, which is great.

So anyway, I mean, suffice to say, we'll be able to say more when we start to see it next week.

Hopefully I don't have in my hands a week from today.

But I'm excited about this feature.

And by the way, I want to underscore what you said.

This camera control feature is available on both the iPhone 16 regular models and the pro models.

I would have lost money on that bet, Jeff, because the action button was only available on the pro, the 15 pro models.

And I would have bet that if there was an extra button when we were talking about this last week, that it would just be available on the pro models.

This is amazing to me.

I mean, this is this is Apple, not just doubling down, but tripling down on the fact that we know that even the people that are not interested in the pro models still need to have this kind of capability.

And I say good job on that, because I agree like this is something that everybody is going to be using.

And they obviously I know we're going to talk about the cameras.

They bumped up the camera specs on all of the options as well, which is great.

Well, that point, Brett, is a good transition into the next one I wanted to make, which is that the big thing that Apple is selling to everybody about this phone is that it is designed for Apple intelligence.

And what that really means is that it is powerful enough to use these next generation, you know, AI models, generative AI models, and do a lot of the work, at least on the phone, which is a fancy way of saying that they needed to have more advanced processors.

And another thing that's interesting about this year is that the new chip that they're using is called the A18 chip.

Now Apple will technically tell you that the iPhone and the iPhone plus, the entry level models have the A16 and the pro models have the A16 pro.

But the reality is, and again, we don't know for sure, but based on all the details and based on what I've read, it looks like they're really just the same chip.

I think the only difference is, you know how when Apple, when any computer manufacturer or company makes chips, they have this thing called binning, which is they make one type of chip and then on some of the chips, every single part of the chip is working.

And that's like the A plus version of the chip.

And then on some of the chips, like maybe one thing's not working and that sounds like a defect, but it's not, it's just, it works.

And so they will bin that one and they'll say, well, this one is just a less powerful version of the same chip.

It sounds like that's what Apple's doing here.

Because if you look at the spec page on the Apple website, you know, they have those nice pages where you can compare them and stuff.

The only real difference that I'm seeing there between the A16 and the A16 pro is that the pro has, I may be off the number, it has one additional GPU unit.

So like the, the entry level one may have three GPUs and the pro has four GPUs and you know, that's the graphical processing unit.

You know, you're going to use that for some high end video games.

I'm sure Apple will use that for it's some of its photography stuff, but the difference between it's either three and four or two and three, whatever that is that, you know, having just a single additional GPU is nice, but it's not the end of the world.

And so it's a long way to say that unlike last year where the entry level iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 pro actually had, they literally had different chips.

I mean, I think it was an A14 and an A15 this year, much like they all have the camera button, much like they all have the action button.

They all basically have the same chip.

It's just a little bit better version of it in the pro.

And so that is what I find interesting.

And the reason for that is Apple wants them both to be based basically just as powerful to take advantage of Apple intelligence.

And we'll get to Apple intelligence in a second, but you know, cause Apple intelligence is important, but the other things, you know, why does anybody need a more powerful processor in an iPhone considering how powerful they are now?

You know, the thing we say over time is as software gets more sophisticated and complicated and you want your iPhone and your other devices to be incredibly responsive.

You don't want to wait, you know, nobody wants the spinning circles and you know, those sorts of things as an exaggeration.

It's nice to have things snappy.

And so this is a year where all of the iPhones, whether you get the least expensive version or the most expensive version, they're all going to have that real snappy feel, which is going to be, it just makes you feel better as you're being productive.

Even if you're just answering emails or answering texts or, or looking up things in a document to talk to your client.

So this is a great feature across the board.

And then of course it also sets the stage for Apple intelligence.

We can come back to this in just a minute, but that was one of my takeaways on Monday, Jeff is I don't remember if there has been such a slight difference between the iPhone regular and the pro models.

And I think that irked me a little bit because I always did, I guess, from a, just a pride perspective, I was like, well, I got the pro model.

Right.

And so I've got like, I can name off multiple things, but you actually linked to an article.

We'll come back to it in just a moment to where, you know, it shows my, maybe why you go to the pro model, but I don't know that there's that much difference.

And I, that's a good thing.

I get it.

I'm glad because I think to your point, you just said it's almost like now everybody gets access to this very powerful chip.

And like you said, they're setting the stage really for Apple intelligence, which by the way, is not going to be available when people get their first iPhone sixteens.

This may not actually happen for another month or so we can come back to that as well.

But anyway, just some interesting things on the differences there, which are not as many as there once was on some of these things.

Can I ask you real quick, cause you wrote about this and I think this is another interesting little tweak here is the bigger screens.

Now I know that the bigger screens on the pro models, is it true on the iPhone 16?

And when I say bigger, I think I'm talking about a 0.2 inch size, right?

That might be a difference there, but it's not a whole lot, but I bet when we get them in our hands, it's going to feel a little bit bigger.

Yeah.

My understanding, and I think I'm right on this is that if you look at this last year, you know, for the iPhone 15, both the 15 and the 15 pro were the same size and the 15 plus and the 15 pro max were also the same size.

This year it's different.

And you were talking about what's the difference between the models and we'll get to all this in a second, or maybe we won't get to it now cause we're here.

We're just sort of jumping around.

You know, there's three, there's, there's really three big differences.

There's that slightly better processor that we talked about.

Not a big deal.

There's the size difference, which is the, which is the one that you just mentioned.

And that the, the, the iPhone 16 just entry level versus the iPhone 16 pro, the pro is two inches bigger on the screen.

So you're going to just see a little bit more.

You may see one extra line of emails, maybe in a, maybe, maybe even one and a half extra lines of email in the mail app.

And likewise, pictures will be just a little bit bigger.

Everything will be a little bit bigger.

Now nobody wants to have too big of a phone and Apple compensated for that on the pro models.

They have decreased the bezels a little bit so that even though the screen is 0.2 inches bigger, the case of the phone is not two inches bigger.

It's just a little bit bigger.

So you will be noticeable.

So that's the entry level one.

And then the same is true in the larger size to the iPhone plus and then the iPhone pro max.

So those are the two larger models, right?

And likewise, there's going to be a 0.2 inch difference between the, the bigger pro and the bigger non-pro.

And this was really interesting for me, Brett, because well, let me say one more thing in terms of the comparison with them.

I think the last big difference is photography.

And this is true in two different ways.

The, they're doing some more sophisticated things with the photography on the pro models that should in theory lead to better pictures.

We'll see.

I hope that they do.

But then most notably, just like last year, if you want to get that five X lens, which I love because you can really get a super zoom last year, you had to get the pro max to get it.

And this year you have to get either the pro or the pro max.

You don't get the five X zoom with the entry level models.

So it's still a very nice camera.

It's just that if you want to get something really far away, you're not going to be able to do that with the entry level models.

You're going to have to pay the extra $200 for the pro models to get that better, get the better thing.

So now that we've talked about the difference between them, let me talk about both the five X lens and the size, because those two features came together for me this year in a re and for many people, I'm sure with a real decision point last year was the first year that I ever got the super big model of the iPhone.

I had resisted it for a long time because I thought it was going to be too big.

You know, I used to joke, it'd be like Maxwell smart, holding up a shoe next to my house, my face.

I was just afraid that the big, big iPhone would be too big for me.

But last year, because only the suit, only the largest model had the five X and I really wanted the five X.

And sure enough, I have loved the five X for the last year.

I was correct to get it.

I decided to opt for the bigger model.

So this year, this week, Apple changed things, right?

Because now I can get that five X lens that I've loved so much for the last year on the regular size iPhone pro.

So I'm like, huh, you know, last year, the only reason I got the larger model was for the lens.

Now I don't have to get this largest model and just to make it even more of a choice.

Everything's bigger this year.

So even the smaller, the quote unquote, smaller iPhone pro is still 2.2 inches bigger.

So I'm like, do I really like that bigger screen enough to have something that's even bigger?

And I went back and forth.

I went back and forth and I finally decided this morning to order the, the pro max.

Am I going to think it's too big?

I don't know.

You know, we'll see when I have it in my hands in a week.

There is a theoretically possibility that I will use it for a few days and think, oh my goodness, this is just too big.

This is crazy.

And then I'll, I'll return it and go back to the, to the smaller model.

Or maybe I'll say, you know, it's been okay.

I mean, I was really concerned that this iPhone that I have right now, the 15 pro max, like when I put it in my pocket, it was going to be too big of my shirt and it's bigger, but it's not obnoxiously bigger.

And in my hand, you know, it's a little bit bigger, but not so big that I feel like it's going to slip out of my hand.

It certainly hasn't.

But it's going to be even put more to the text when it, when I get this new 16 pro max, which is going to be the biggest iPhone ever made.

I don't know.

We'll see.

Okay.

Well, let's go back quickly to Apple intelligence, Jeff, because I think I just mentioned that it's actually not going to be available on September 20th when everybody gets their new iPhones.

So they it's I remember that several folks in the presentation on Monday alluded to it.

Obviously, they're excited about it.

They were talking about how the iPhone 16 is built pretty much specifically for Apple intelligence and supporting that.

But you don't get it yet.

In other words, get the new iPhone, but you're not going to get.

And I felt like it was just a kind of an odd, awkward little thing is like, hey, we want you to get a new iPhone, an upgrade, but you're not going to be able to enjoy all of the really cool things that it can possibly do very soon, but it'll have the chip in it ready to go once you get there.

You know, that's a hard sell a lot of times.

But anyway, just we didn't really see a whole lot more.

I don't think knew about Apple intelligence.

They were just alluding to the fact that, hey, we talked about this a few months ago.

It's going to come.

We're excited about it.

You should be too, but you haven't seen it yet.

Yeah, it's just it's kind of a weird little, little area that we're in right now, I think, with Apple and the intelligence aspect.

We've seen this in past years, that one of the features that Apple has announced as something you get with the new phone is something that's not quite yet available.

Like for example, there was years ago that they were talking about how like night vision was going to be even better, but you were going to have to wait for an update for it.

And there was another year that they were talking about some other camera thing, but often it's just like a, you know, a side feature that they're saying, hey, and this is coming.

It's going to be another reason you want the new model.

What's really remarkable this year, as you say, Brett, is that, you know, Apple is putting a lot of their eggs in the Apple intelligence basket.

And that is, it's really one of their big selling points for getting a new iPhone.

So it's a little interesting that something that they say, this is a point, you know, maybe not the only reason, but one of the primary reasons that we encourage you to get this new phone.

And by the way, you can't actually do it yet.

And again, it's going to be, that's what I'm saying.

Next month in October, they're going to have some of the initial Apple intelligence features available in the whatever number we're going to have next 18, 18.1, 18.1 update.

So you know, the reality is only a few of us are going to be getting the iPhone on.

Well, not a few of us, a lot of people get one on the day they come out, but you know, all of the early adopters are going to have to wait just a few weeks to take advantage of it.

And then we'll start to have something next month.

And then many of the Apple, I mean, Apple, it's Apple intelligence is not a binary thing.

It's not on or off.

It's, it's, it's a, it's a series of features that you're just going to get over time.

So we're going to have a few things available in October.

I suspect that we'll see more by December.

We'll see more next spring.

We'll see more next, you know, they're just going to continue to come out with new Apple intelligence features.

And but, but a few of them are going to be available, you know, not at launch, but in October and these new iPhones will have the oomph to do them.

And it will be things like, you know, summarizing emails, which is something that doesn't really jump out at me, you know, of all the Apple intelligence features, the one that I've thought this actually could be interesting.

Apple did a nice job of putting together an advertisement that I actually took at the end of my post today.

Oh yeah.

Here you go.

They have a series of ads with an actress, Bella Ramsey.

And many people know her because she was in a HBO show, the last of us, which was based on the video game.

And she also had a fantastic role in a game of Thrones too, where she played like a young, a young queen or something like that.

But so she's a great act, but it's interesting that they've decided to tap this actress to talk about Apple intelligence.

And right, they currently have a series of three different commercials, but the one that jumped out at me the most was the one that I linked to here where, I mean, not to give away the commercial, but I guess I will give it away.

She's basically at a party and she sees somebody across the room and she's like, we've all had this happen before.

I do not remember that person's name, but I know that we had dinner together at such and such, you know, and so that's what she does.

She turns to her phone and she says, Hey, you know who, who was it that I had dinner with at such and such a place, you know, earlier this year.

Siri is smart enough to come back and say, Oh, that's that's so-and-so.

And so then she turns and she's like, Oh, so-and-so so good to see you again.

That is a feature that I love.

Is it going to work as well in real life as it does in the commercial?

I mean, rarely do things do so, but maybe it will.

I don't know.

I mean, the reality is there is a ton of information in my iPhone about the people that I know between my contacts app, my calendar app, other things.

And so maybe, maybe it actually might my text messages, maybe it will work that well.

And if so, then I'll say, you know, Bravo, this is a good example of Apple intelligence.

I've just been thinking of all the times I've been in that exact same scenario, Jeff, and all of the places that I go and check.

I check my contacts first, because maybe I had them in my contacts.

I check phone calls to see if I called them.

I'll go and check my calendar to see, you know, is there a dinner?

Did I, did I put a calendar?

I might even check LinkedIn.

I might check some of my other social channels.

Like I've just checked in so many areas, like my email messages, like there's so many places now, but all of that is something that is unique to me.

Right.

That's my calendar.

That's my social channels.

That's my email.

And I, I, you link to another great story is what I'm going to go into here in wired where Apple intelligence promises better AI privacy.

And I think what I like about this, what you just described in that, in that commercial and the fact that this wired magazine, I think they were talking to Craig Federici here.

Yeah.

He goes that we promise your data, your personal data to be her medically sealed inside of a privacy bubble.

Now we'll see how that goes out, but just when you were talking about that scenario and the way that I would normally go about it, um, maybe this could work, right?

I mean, that could be something that I would entrust to use Apple intelligence, at least the first tier of Apple intelligence that is on my device.

Because then there's private cloud computing and then there's, you know, it goes to chat and GPT and, and, you know, there's a whole lot, we've really got to figure out how that's all going to work when it's in our hands.

But, um, I think, I think that's kind of brilliant.

I mean, just that exact same scenario that you're talking about, how many times I've been there and it would just be great to ask slow-mo, you know, like who was this, or can you give me an idea?

And that would be brilliant.

That would, that would be absolutely brilliant.

Yeah.

So, I mean, let's, let's table the rest of that one intelligence until we're actually trying it in a few months, but wouldn't it be great if it is as cool as Apple thinks it will be.

If it is, then these new iPhones are going to have all of the power that you need to take advantage of it.

So, um, so that's good.

Okay.

I want to just real quick, let's run through your, your article.

Did you have somewhere else you want to go to?

Cause you talked about the processor, the battery, minor little features, you know, we're seeing that you'll, um, one of the, it's, it's, I don't know if it's, it's true or it's a rumor, but I linked to it on my, uh, on my article today on today, not, not from the review that it looks like you'll be able to charge these new phones with a cord a little bit faster, um, which is good.

And then what Apple did announce is that if you use MagSafe to charge them, um, in the past, you know, when MagSafe first came out, it charged, it was nice because you didn't have to connect a cord, but it charged slowly.

I think it was 7.5 amps.

And then Apple came out with the MagSafe 2, which doubled that to 15 amps.

You're like, okay, well that's pretty, that's getting better.

And then with these, with this newest iPhone, if you have the right kind of puck for it, the right kind of charging puck, which Apple sells and hopefully third party will sell it, you can actually get a little bit faster.

Still, I think it's up to 25 or remember quickly, which is pretty good because 25 amps, you know, usually Apple's with a cord would charge at 30 amps.

Now, I just, I just said, the rumor is that with these newest iPhones, you can actually go a little bit faster to like 45.

Um, you know, it's going to pretty much always be the fastest possible way to charge an iPhone is with a cord.

But as MagSafe charging gets faster and faster, people make it to the point where the slight difference in charging, it's like, ah, you know, either one of them is going to pretty much get me there.

And since it's so much easier to just set my phone on top of a MagSafe or a Qi2 charger or whatever it is, that they'll just go for that.

And I'm one of the people, I personally was slow to MagSafe and Qi charging when it first came out, it was so slow.

And I'm like, who wants this?

Just use a cord for goodness sakes.

But I've actually sort of, as, as it's gotten better over time, I'm now a convert.

And as we've talked about many times in the past, right here at my desk and right here at home on my beds, my nightstand, I have, you know, little MagSafe chargers that I use and they keep my iPhone tapped off every day, which is great.

So that's nice.

And by the way, while we're talking about battery life, we should mention that these newest iPhones have better battery life than ever before.

And that's especially true if you get the pro models.

And I think the reason for that is just because they're physically bigger.

So they've got more space for a little bit more battery.

And so you get, I mean, with the, with the iPhone pro max, the one of the ways that they, that they say it is, is video playback.

And what is it?

It's it's, it was, I put it at 27 hours of video playback.

I mean, I think, I think that's enough.

If I find myself in a situation where I need to watch more than 27 hours of video in a row, you know, I'm going to probably take a rest and let my iPhone charge in between that.

So that would be a super, super, super long plane trip that you'd have to have.

So, you know, there's, there's a lot of battery life in these phones, which is always good because you've always been in situations where, you know, maybe your iPhone's not getting a really good cell phone connection.

And so it's using its battery even more than normal.

And by the end of the day, nobody likes to be completely out of battery power.

In fact, related to battery power, I did not put this in my post this morning, Brett, but I've actually, and I didn't link to it today, but I've actually heard about it this week.

This is not something that Apple has officially announced, but they have alluded to the fact that you know how we've all had a situation with our iPhone where when it's working really hard downloading updates or something like that, you know how your phone can get a little warm and it often gets hot, like in one particular point, you can sort of feel where that processor is.

This design of the iPhone 16 has got two things in it.

The way that the aluminum interior case is designed.

And also it's got this graphite sort of a shield that goes in that sort of dissipate dissipates.

Is that the right word?

The heat.

And so the rumor is that this new iPhone will do a better job of not getting so hot.

And you know, that doesn't happen a lot, but we've all has it happen.

And I've also had times where like if I'm outside on a super hot day, like at the beach, and I'm taking a lot of video between being hot outside, between the sun hitting my phone and between me doing like lots of hot 4k video, you know, every once in a blue moon, and it doesn't happen often, but I have gotten to the point where my screen will like totally, totally dim, like more than it's ever dim before.

And if you go really far, you'll actually get an alert from your family saying, well, this is too hot.

It'll shut down.

So it would be nice.

And I presume that this is true, that the rumors are that this model is going to be better.

And we'll see in practice, but it would be nice if the next time that I'm on that sunny beach day taking videos, maybe the phone will do a better job of keeping cool.

So that's, that's really nice.

I was inspired about that just quickly, because I know we talked about this when the new iPad came out a few months ago, right?

Is that they had sort of like a new kind of a skeleton, if you will, on the inside that I think was more so to make it a little bit thinner than how they spread out the, the components inside.

But I also believe that it was some of that was because of heat dissipation on that as well.

So yeah, I did catch on that.

And I don't see that a lot of people have talked about that quite yet.

The only thing that I can't believe we didn't cover, like the actual headline here is colors.

I mean, there are so many people that are so happy that the iPhone 16 now has actual colors, like deep, rich colors.

There is black, white, pink, which, you know, that's, that's what we are.

Teal, ultra marine.

I mean, some people have been saying they've looked at this pink and they say it's Barbie pink.

It's not just like, you know, rose petal color.

It's Barbie pink on here.

But these really do look pretty.

I mean, I got to say, it looks like it's very rich on the iPhone 16.

Now if you go to the iPhone Pro, you pretty much get what is it like black, gray, gray, gray, lesser gray, and a little brownish kind of a gray on there.

So not a whole lot of color options on the pro side, but they are titanium.

I think they call it desert titanium is one of these new models in there.

Anyway, just wanted to throw that out because a lot of times you guys all know that Jeff and I were more concerned like with the components and the functionality, but I know there's a lot of people out there that just like, Ooh, green phone.

That's the one I want.

Exactly.

Good stuff.

All right.

One last little quick thing here.

You linked to a story 22 features that the 16 and 16 pro models have that other iPhones don't.

Anything you wanted to highlight here?

I think we've done most of the camera control.

Yeah.

I think we've done most of it.

But if you want to get really, really, you know, they've got lots of itty bitty things in there.

Like one of, for example, I just saw you scroll by was this visual intelligence feature.

It's a subset of Apple intelligence, but you can hold your phone up to something like a store and it will actually tell you, Oh, this, you know, based upon your GPS location and the picture is like, Oh, this is the store.

Let me tell you what it's hours are.

Here's the phone number.

If you want to call it, here's the website and you know, things like that.

Or you can put the other example they showed us.

You can point to a dog and you can see what kind of dog it is and see what kind of dog it is.

Right.

Version of that in the past, but that'd be cool.

But that, that website is actually got a nice job of like every little bitty thing that you may or may not use all of them, but it's just to see all the, can I ask you?

Yeah.

And also let's not forget that is people using the camera control button slash trackpad.

I mean the fact that, you know, we just, you and I talked about in the context of taking pictures and videos, but that's utilizing, I think, you know, even more so on the Apple intelligence side, like you said, it was sort of a subset, but I think that's another area where they could get into.

Like you pointed out a plant.

There's a lot of apps that you can point at plants or pets or even people, and it can even tell you what it is, you know, and we've talked about that even in the magnifier, there is that, that artificial intelligence built into the magnifier app in the iPhone.

And I love showing this trick because you can point it at something and it'll describe to you what it's pointing at and what it's looking at.

And that's pretty, that's pretty amazing as well.

Cool stuff.

Yeah.

So I think that that's pretty much a cover.

Anyway, it's a great link.

I'll make sure that we have that there in the show notes as well.

Okay.

But that's not all.

They also had two other main topics that they talked about on Monday.

How about let's do AirPods quickly.

There was not a whole lot of exciting new announcements in here, but a few tweaks and things that actually, I think one of the most significant announcements of the entire thing, but on a much bigger picture came out of this AirPods section here, but your thoughts on AirPods announcements that came out here.

So three main announcements.

First, they have the new cheaper version of the AirPods, which are just the AirPods, you know, the sort of plastic ones, right?

They have designed, they've changed the design on them again so that the shapes a little different.

They say it's going to fit even more people's ears, which is good.

And they're calling these the AirPods four, and you can get the AirPods four in two versions.

One version that has a version of noise cancellation.

It's not going to be as good as the AirPod pro noise cancellation because the AirPod pro not only does it have the, the, the chips that can be used for noise cancellation, but because the tip fits completely within your ear, it's got sort of an active, you know, a passive noise cancellation.

These AirPods, they don't completely fill your ear canal, so they're not going to have that, but they are going to be able to cancel at least some outside noise.

And I think the difference in prices, maybe 30, 40, $50, something like that between $50 is all 50.

Okay.

So you can either get the cheap, the cheap, cheap iPhone app, excuse me, the cheap, cheap version of the AirPod four that doesn't have that feature or for an extra 50 bucks, you can add that feature.

So that's nice.

So that's a brand new product that we haven't seen before.

And we'll see what people think about them.

And what they said, I was just going to say, this is where I first got annoyed about this.

First of all, it's the AirPods for cool for new version, $129.

Then they said AirPods for, but with noise cancellation, that's fantastic.

$179.

So $50 difference.

My question is Jeff, who's going to walk into an Apple store.

I know there's some people, but I'm just saying it's a $50 difference.

Like why would you confuse consumers so much?

They're both AirPods for.

Which is you got to say AirPods for nothing and AirPods for with active noise cancellation.

I'm glad the noise cancellation is coming to the AirPods for, like you said, though, I don't think it's going to work quite as good, but that was it on the AirPods for how about next?

If they had asked me to come up with the name, I might've called one, the four and one, the four plus.

Thank you.

That's what I'm saying.

Exactly.

Anyway, a little bit of a naming thing.

So another thing that's new is the AirPods max, which are the big things that go over your ears.

Apple barely knew change.

It's barely new.

Basically they took off the lightning port and added USB-C, but they did not change the chip inside of it.

So as a result, there's a lot of features that you can have with some of the newest AirPods, like the way she can control Siri and stuff like that, that actually don't come to the AirPods max.

Why if they're going to update it anyway, why not give it all the power?

Because these are expensive.

I mean, what I, they kept it the same price.

Yeah.

$550.

It's, it's strange, but anyway, so it's, it's a slight change to the AirPods max.

And then the third change, and this is the one that I led off with my post today is that for the product that Apple used to call AirPods pro second generation, they're now just calling them AirPods pro two, which is just a little bit shorter.

So I like, I like the name change and for the AirPods pro two.

And by the way, you talk about two models of something, the version of AirPods pro that I have have a case with lightning, the version that you have.

So I have the version that came out in 2022, two years ago.

You have the version that came out one year ago, which made a change, not, not to what goes on your ear, but to the case and your case actually has USB-C.

So there's two versions of AirPod pro two out there, but regardless of which one you have, Apple has this new feature, which is pretty cool.

Which is that it can help you with ear health.

First of all, you can actually run a test, like you'll use your iPhone and it takes a few minutes and it plays different types of sounds in your ear.

And you can say, you know, tap here.

If you hear something, you know, so by, by explaining what you can hear and what you can't hear, it can actually figure out, first of all, are you having hearing loss?

And second of all, what's your, what's your profile for how to adjust your hearing loss?

Which is interesting because apparently a huge number of Americans, especially as we all get to a certain age, have some degree of hearing loss.

And some people know about it more than others, but so we will all, I mean, everybody with AirPods pro two can now have built in the ability to have your hearing checked without having to go see a doctor, which is pretty cool.

This is not available today, but it's coming very soon.

In fact, it was literally just approved by the FDA yesterday.

And then second of all in addition to doing a test, you can actually use your AirPods pro two as a hearing aid.

And so hearing aids cost three, three, four, $500, if not more.

And so now the AirPods pro two, which you may already own and cost, you know, about the same, about $300, it has the ability to be a hearing aid.

And so if there's somebody across the room and you can't hear them talking because of your hearing loss, that same test has a little profile for you and it can boost the audio so that you can hear the person.

And so I think this is really cool that you can, and it's not just for hearing things in the environment.

It will, once it figures out your specific hearing profile, it can apply that profile when you're just listening to music and when you're listening to a podcast or talking on the phone.

And so, you know, AirPods, in addition to just being something that you can listen to something, it's almost like this medical device that is going to be adjusted to, to your specific hearing needs.

It's pretty cool.

I have a few quick thoughts on this.

First of all, the fact that I already use my AirPods pro two as a hearing device, but it's more of an hearing filter, I would say, because I think of them today.

I've mentioned this several times on the podcast.

I think of the AirPods pro two almost as a way to protect my hearing.

Now, when I go to Chicago or somewhere in a big city, so much noise, so much, and it just annoys me.

And so I usually leave my AirPods pro in, but with like adaptive option on, if that makes sense, right?

Instead of transparency, I go to adaptive so that it, you know, we saw this when Apple announced this, you know, you could walk out and there's somebody doing a jackhammer and immediately my AirPods pro two will downplay that it'll basically noise cancel out, but I can still hear maybe voices or if a car is coming up on that kind of a thing.

So I have already been thinking about the AirPods pro two and sort of a medical type like aspect on there.

So that was the first thing.

Yeah, exactly.

So that was the first thing I thought of.

Second, the fact now that this can also be used and they actually had approved it because when they announced this on Monday, they did not, they said FDA approval forthcoming.

They had two things where FDA approval was not there yet.

And I thought, okay, well that's going to be another five months, but it just was a few days, which is amazing that it came out yesterday, but it now can be a hearing aid.

So thoughts on this.

My mother, first of all, resisted for a long time getting hearing aids and she needed them.

And you even had another link today in this story from Ben Lovejoy, nine to five Mac to where this could, this could change social norms that we still have sort of the stigma.

Unfortunately with people that have hearing aids, they don't want them.

They, they, they like, you know, they think it's, it's, it's too much.

They don't want to get them.

So the fact, if you could just utilize something that is like a more socially acceptable, I guess you know, pair of AirPods to listen, but they can also double as hearing aids.

That's amazing.

I mean, I feel like that that just breaks that down in that aspect.

And here's the other thing, just the last point quickly.

I remember when my mother got hearing aids, they, I think they were like a secondhand from a family member and, but it was still $1,600 for this.

I mean, hearing aids are very expensive for good reason.

I understand they do amazing stuff and I'm glad that my mom got them several years ago, but now we're talking about a $250 pair of AirPods Jeff that could potentially, maybe not yet.

It could potentially replace something like that.

I mean, that almost like brings that, that, that makes it more accessible to people that I think might need them.

And I just, I really just think that that's, that's an amazing aspect.

Now I don't work for a hearing aid company and if I did, I'd probably be a little upset because we talk about Apple Sherlocking app sometimes.

I feel like here, Apple is almost Sherlocking an entire industry at this point, because if they could be successful at that, I'm sorry, here's the last thing I want to say.

There's nothing new on the hardware side, Jeff.

This is amazing that Apple can do this just with a software update to the devices that we already use.

Like we don't have to buy new ones to get access to this.

And that's just going to be pretty amazing.

I thought, I thought all of that was good.

I feel like this area, but a much bigger picture than just getting excited about, you know, a hardware piece on a much bigger level.

This is a very major announcement.

And that was one of the more, the things that I was most excited about coming out of this.

You talk about the social norms, the one that, that it occurred to me and then I also saw it and I think it was this article by Ben Lovejoy.

And I mentioned it that, you know, for so many years now, ever since the original AirPods with cords coming out of it, when you saw somebody wearing headphones of any kind, you just assume that they can't hear you.

I mean, if I walk into the kitchen and my wife is cooking and I see that she's got her AirPods in, I just assume she's listening to a podcast or listening to music and she can't hear me.

Don't bother her.

And so I'll sort of wave, you know, and get her attention so she can pause.

But ironically, if people are going to use AirPods as a hearing aid, it will then mean just the opposite.

It means not only can I hear you, but I can actually hear you better than ever.

So that's a perfect time to talk to me.

So it is sort of funny that it puts on its end.

You can no longer assume that just because someone has something in their ear that they are not going to pay attention to you.

I just think that's funny.

Okay.

Let's move to the next pretty big topic, I guess.

Apple watches.

I got to tell you, I'm, I'm 50 50 on this.

I know you're excited cause you've been waiting for this for a long time.

Uh, and you've already talked about the fact you have already ordered pre-ordered your brand new Apple watch 10.

That was the main announcement that they made is some, some brand new coming out now.

And uh, I'm pretty excited.

They, they've done, you know, we talked about this, it slimmed it down a little bit.

I think the battery life has improved.

There were so few other things that they announced in here that I think are pretty excited.

Um, and it sounds like, uh, you, uh, you bought one, pre-ordered one, which is good.

So I had been using the Apple watch series seven.

I knew it was going to upgrade this year anyway, because it was time for me to upgrade.

And you know, the big decision for me was the ultra versus the, you know, now this year it's the Apple watch 10 and Apple did not update the ultra this year.

They're continuing to sell the ultra two from last year.

Now they are selling it in a new color, the black color, which looks very cool, but it's the same ultra two as last year, which was a fantastic, don't get me wrong.

It's a fantastic watch, but, um, but they did upgrade the, the nine to now have the 10.

And again, this is one that I've heard some people say, ah, you know, whatever, just another upgrade.

But you mean, again, it's a watch you're not going to change unless you're going to turn it into a triangle or something like that.

You're never going to have these revolutionary changes.

The thing that I have always wanted from day one is for my watch to be even faster and more powerful.

You don't want to slow watch now.

Apple has more or less fixed that problem with even with the series seven, they're now fast enough.

Um, but I've always wanted it to be just, you know, even thinner on my wrist so that just, it's just, you know, if you're wearing like a long sleeve shirt, it doesn't take up as much space and stuff like that.

Um, but I also liked the idea of a bigger screen.

And so literally the two things that I've asked for, can you just make it a little bit thinner and can you make the screen just a little bit bigger?

That's exactly what the Apple watch 10 is.

In fact, to my surprise, the display on the Apple watch 10, not the case of it, but the actual, you know, places where they can have pixels is a tiny bit bigger than even the ultra models, which is sort of interesting.

So I have been, as I've mentioned in the prior, uh, uh, podcast, I've been sort of trying out with the ultra recently and I had one and I, and I really did like that big display on the ultra.

And so now I can get a big display without having the super thick ultra.

Now I'm not going to have the ridiculous battery life that the ultra has, you know, ultra is just crazy.

You know that cause you own an ultra, the first model of it.

So you have, I mean, if you, if you want really, really, really, really, really good battery life, get the ultra.

And if you want to have the rugged outdoors, I'm going to go scuba diving and then climb Mount such and such.

You know, if you want all those rugged features, yeah.

I mean, you're going to want the Apple watch ultra for that.

It's got the siren and it's got all those sorts of things, but if you just want a regular old Apple watch, um, then the series 10, I think is going to be really good.

So I'm looking forward to it.

So I pre-ordered one.

Yeah.

I have it coming next week.

It comes in the aluminum case that they've had since the very first version of the Apple watch or the nicer version of the case ever since the first year.

What was that?

2005 or whatever, a long time now, or 2015, I guess it's been 10 years now. 10 years ago.

Um, I have been using the stainless steel version of the Apple watch, which I've really liked.

I like the shininess of it.

Um, and, um, I think it's really pretty, but this year they are not, they don't have the stainless steel version for the first time they have.

Um, everything is in Titan is a titanium, which they've done titanium before in the watch.

And again, the, the, the pro models of the phone are all titanium.

Titanium is a great material because it's incredibly durable, incredibly durable, but also very light.

And so I'm looking forward to see it.

The version that they're using on the high end Apple watch is a little glossy, which will be interesting.

So, um, so I saw that that's the one that I ordered, so I will have it.

Hopefully it will be delivered a week from today.

Maybe even while we're recording this podcast, we'll see what it looks like, but I'm really, I'm looking forward to it and, and I hope that I like it.

And they also have a lot of new Apple bands and stuff like that.

In fact, you were talking about the colors, you talked about the colors for the iPhone, the band that I chose for it was one of the colors of the new iPhone is ultramarine and they also have that in the bands.

And so I've always liked the solo bands.

So I ordered a solo loop band and ultramarine just a little bit brighter blue.

We'll see what that looks like, but that'll be sort of fun.

Um, but I also mentioned that the Milanese loop, which has been one of my favorite bands for forever, they now have a titanium version of the Milanese loop.

Now I'm going to be curious, um, titanium Milanese.

I have used my, my regular old silver Milanese loop with an Apple watch ultra, which has a titanium case.

Right.

And I thought it looked fine.

It wasn't that much of a difference.

Um, but having a titanium Milanese loop might be even nicer.

I have to look and see how expensive there are.

That might be like a, I don't know, something asked for, for like a birthday present or Christmas present or something like that.

It's just a color match.

I mean, the fact that I've had a Milanese loop for nine years and have used it almost every single day for nine years shows how much I like that style.

So I'm glad that we have a new color of it.

So anyway, so for me, I'm excited about this Apple watch.

It's going to be the latest and greatest, a little bit bigger, a little bit thinner.

One thing that I've noticed, somebody said this, we'll see if it's true next week.

One of the things I love about the watch that you have, the ultra Brett and the ultra two is that watch face called the modular.

What is modular ultra watch face?

It talked about this two weeks ago.

It's got a couple of weeks ago.

It's got so many complications on it.

I really, really love that.

Apparently it's not going to be available with the Apple watch 10, which makes no sense because it's big enough to support it.

Maybe that rumor is not true.

We'll find out in a week.

It might just be, you know, because the word ultra is the name, maybe Apple is saying, Nope, if you want that watch face, you got to get the ultra, which would be very unfortunate because it's totally big enough for it.

But anyway, that's a minor little detail.

So, well, I have much, I'll have more to say about the Apple, which in the coming weeks, once I have one on my hands, but I was excited.

I mean, much like the iPhone, it's not revolutionary changes, but it's enough for me to be excited.

I feel the same way about this Apple watch.

This is, it's really a lot of what I've been asking for and I'm excited about it.

So I love this little comparison image that they have here.

If you have a series seven, eight, and nine, that's a great going to attend.

Look at that difference.

I mean, it doesn't look like it's a ton of thickness.

I mean, so to describe what we're showing is Apple on their website has this comparison where you can see half of the watch as a series seven, eight, or nine, and the other half is series 10.

And you can see the difference in what they call the thin stint classic.

They did make it a little thinner, not terribly thinner, but I think that's going to make a big difference for folks.

Certainly if people, I find a lot of people hold onto the Apple watches for many years, Jeff, and I think there's going to be a lot of people coming from a seven or eight even and upgrading to a series 10 and that's going to be a big deal.

We don't have to spend a lot of time on this, but just one thing I wanted to mention that the second thing that Apple was waiting on FDA approval for, and I think we're still waiting on this, is they announced that the Apple watch will be able to detect sleep apnea.

Well, I guess more specific, it's like it'll detect whether you stop breathing basically overnight and you know, they'll interpret that if that is sleep apnea or at least similar to the way they do a fib right now.

They're not telling you you got sleep apnea.

They're telling you, you may have a problem.

You might want to get this checked out.

That was a pretty exciting thing.

We talked about this a little bit last week.

I think that this might be coming and they did mention it and they even had Dr.

Sumo, I think her name is.

She's really good.

You know, a doctor on staff as an executive there at Apple that talks about a lot of this aspect on there, but that's going to be pretty exciting how that's going to be played out or how that's going to be useful.

Let me just say something about that feature.

We were wondering a week ago because we know that Apple has this patent dispute with Massimo about you know, they can't use the blood oxygen thing and I was thinking, well, how are they going to measure sleep apnea if in the United States, they can't turn on that blood oxygen thing and the answer that Apple gave us on Monday is we're just going to detect sleep apnea based upon the watch motions, like you moving your body and your arm as you sleep at night and they say that they've got the test to back it up.

They have done, you know, these clinically reviewed, you know, peer reviewed tests and they say that we can actually give you with confidence a sleep apnea prediction just based on how much your body moves.

So it's not testing your breathing like, you know, that's the typical symptom of sleep apnea.

Right, right, right.

So I thought that was just sort of interesting that they've done the test, they've got the science to back it up and they're saying that we're going to be able to tell you if we think you should go talk to a doctor about possible sleep apnea and the way it works is you wear the Apple watch at night for 30 days in a row and then it comes up with a summary and then for every 30 days it can do that and so like even if it doesn't detect something, you know, this month, if a year or two or five now, you know, it says, hey, you know, I'm starting to see something that could be sleep apnea that you might not have known about.

You should go talk to your doctor about this and so I think that's a cool feature.

So yeah, but that's the one that the FDA has not approved this yet, but again, given how quickly they approved the last feature, maybe they'll approve this one next week.

So I suspect we're not going to have long to wait before we can start to use that.

Last article quickly that we could highlight is from our good friend that we follow, John Vorey's Apple's media event, all the small things.

So there's always people that are looking for like the things that either, you know, kind of reading between the lines or people, things that Apple didn't specifically address, but we saw it maybe in a poster or, you know, something else has leaked anything here that you want to highlight from folks that have talked about, you know, what, what Apple didn't really focus on, but there were still excited about.

I'll mention one of them, which is last year, Apple was very proud of the fact that they had replaced their leather cases with fine woven cases, something that they came out with and now fine woven cases.

First of all, they went over with like a lead balloon.

I bought one.

It was bad.

I'm not really thrilled about the way it feels.

And so I don't use it.

You know, I, I basically, when I travel sometimes I'll put it on there, but I never use it.

And then the people that do use it and use it regularly have reported that just over the last year, the cases have started to sort of fall apart and they don't look very good.

I know, I know that leather is not great for the environment, blah, blah, blah, but a leather case does feel pretty good.

So I have to admit, you know, Apple's in a bit of a quandary.

I know what they were trying to do.

They were trying to do the right thing.

They were trying to be responsible.

Let's come up with something that's almost as good as leather.

And they, sometimes you hit it out of the park and sometimes you go whoosh and you miss.

And I think fine woven was a miss.

And so what's interesting is that this year Apple doesn't have a replacement for it.

I mean, they will still sell you a clear case or they will sell you one of those sort of rubbery polyurethane cases, but you know, the, the product category of a leather case, which for many years, Apple sold leather cases last year, they replaced that category for the same price with the fine woven case this year.

Crickets, they got nothing there.

So you have to assume that Apple is trying to come up with their next version of something that is, you know, a nicer case, but not leather and is environmentally responsible, but they weren't ready to announce it this year.

So Apple said nothing about it this week.

And you know, we'll know about it when they have something to say.

Fine woven is no more.

It was something, you know, we, we, we barely knew you and see you later.

So that was one of the small non-announcements that jumped out at me.

Anything jump out at you or just.

Yeah, a couple of quick things real quick.

You alluded to this in your review of the iPhone 16 is now they're going to support wifi seven, which I got to be honest with you.

I don't even know what that means other than it's got to be better than wifi six.

And so I'm glad that they're continuing on that.

And then also there wasn't a lot of this on Monday, but they, he, he John talked about it here.

Apple satellite based services are being expanded to the UK and Canada.

And I got to tell you, I'm just really interested in watching this.

And there was another story that came out this morning that United, the United airlines is within the next few months going to replace all of their planes with free wifi from space X that has the star link capability.

And that is a basically a satellite based wifi connectivity.

And so all of that to say, I just, my mind's been in this space of like, man, improvements, not just to wifi and speeds, but how does that affect cellular?

And then, you know, I've been very excited that Apple has continued to push a little bit into this satellite based capacity.

We have it now for like emergency functions and stuff, but if we're able to maybe text message through satellites versus maybe cellular services, that's several, maybe a couple of years, several months down the road, I get it.

But I just, I just was excited to see that they're continuing to kind of push on that.

And those are the things that got me a little bit excited.

It's funny that jumped out at you, Brett, you know how at the end of my Friday post, I always try to link to a video this week.

I have that video that we discussed before the Apple intelligence one, but you know, the one that I almost linked to, and in fact, I'll give you a little preview.

This is probably what I'll link to unless, if I don't find anything else, the one that I'll link to it next Friday, one way or the other is Joanna Stern at the Wall Street Journal always does a nice job with her videos.

And she came out with one this week, Brett, where she tested that new, what you just described, the new satellite service that when you're on a plane, you'll be able to get really good wifi.

And she actually, she actually took a flight on a specialized plane that like it wasn't a commuter plane.

It was a plane that was made to work with this new wifi service.

And so she does some good comparison tests.

So again, I promise I will link to that video.

It will be the last video of that.

It'll be the last one next week or I'll put it, or you can just look for yourself, go on YouTube and search for Joanna Stern Wall Street Journal, but it describes that service, but I agree that it's some exciting stuff and it's coming out.

So that's a, that's an interesting little thing.

Okay.

In the know, for this one, how about let's do like maybe the most disappointing announcement for Monday, maybe along with our favorite announcement and I'll, I'll start off.

Okay.

Because mine kind of does both.

You alluded to this earlier.

I still have the Apple watch ultra one and I still love it almost two years old now.

And it is still fantastic for all the reasons we talked about.

So I was so anxious that on Monday that they were going to release, of course the ultra three.

And I was so excited.

They're talking about the updates, you know, the, the, cause we have presumably on Monday with iOS 18, we'll get watch OS 10.

Is that right?

Is that, or 11, I think coming out.

So I'm excited for that.

And they did have an update to the Apple watch ultra two, but it's still an Apple watch ultra two, just like you already alluded to this.

All of the Apple watches have been one color and is that natural titanium, which is great.

And so the big announcement for the ultra two, a new color.

Now why this is still my favorite, because it looks really good.

It's basically black titanium.

You can see I've got it on the screen here and it is really cool.

He had said a little orange, red button.

I mean, even my son started drooling over this because he was like, Oh, that just looks so slick.

And I am so tempted with that color.

In fact, I was watching the video from Marques Brownlee and he basically said the same thing.

He's like, I don't need it.

I already have an Apple watch ultra two, but it looks so good.

Like whatever they did with it, it just looks so good.

But I'm also at the same time, Jeff, so disappointed.

Like, come on, Apple.

Why could you not do an ultra three?

Like I wanted some thinness on the ultra as well.

I wanted some improvements on the ultra as well.

I'm ready to pay a premium for something like this.

Now, who knows?

Maybe in a few months they might do, you know, kind of a silent release or some kind of an update because maybe it wasn't ready yet.

At least that's just what I'm hoping.

But at the same time that I was so impressed with this new ultra watch to black titanium edition, I was also so disappointed.

Like come on.

Like I was so ready when they started talking about it, Jeff.

It's like, okay, good.

I'm going to be, I'm going to pre-order along with my friend Jeff and I got nothing.

I'm not going to go to the series 10.

I'm going to stay on the Apple watch ultra.

I love it.

I have so enjoyed it and I'm ready for up ultra, ultra three, but I didn't get it.

Yeah.

Two thoughts on that.

If they had come out with an ultra three, I would have been, and especially if it had been like a thinner version, you know, maybe it's still, but you know, all the great battery life and a little bit thinner of a design, I would have had a very, very hard time choosing between the ultra three and the series 10.

You would have been there.

Yeah.

Apple made my decision this year easier.

And if they do come out with an ultra three next year, you know, I'll probably stick with, I usually stick with my watches for many years, but so I won't have to worry about it next year, but people next year worry about it.

So that's one thing.

Another thing is, although I agree with you, the black on the ultra two does look pretty sweet from the pictures.

It's worth noting that I have never, I usually don't get, I've tried one before, but I've never had one as my primary watch, the aluminum version of the Apple watch.

And I did notice that this year, one of the colors of the aluminum Apple watch 10 is a jet black, which means it's not just black, but it's sort of a polished aluminum.

And I will tell you a long time ago, Apple had an iPhone back when the iPhones used to be aluminum and it was a jet black version of the iPhone.

It looked pretty cool.

Right.

So I will just say that if a black Apple watch interests you and if you, you know, the ultra line looks like it's got a cool new color, but even the other end of the extreme, even the entry level line, you know, I haven't seen one of the stores yet, but I look forward since I have to be in the store next week anyway, to pick up my iPhone.

I'm going to take a look at that jet black version.

Might as well.

Pick one of those up too.

I don't know, but I'll at least look at it.

It's an interesting color.

So when I think of the announcements, my, the biggest disappointment for me was the AirPod Max.

Oh, of course it was such a minor change.

And the reason I say that is I don't need AirPods Max.

I love my AirPods pro, but I can imagine a world where if the AirPods Max had been cheaper because they're too expensive, I think, and if they had had all the new features and maybe even extra things that they can only fit in the AirPods Max, because there's so much bigger, you know, if they were even better and even cheaper, I would have been tempted.

I mean, again, Christmas present, not something I would wear all the time.

Absolutely.

Once in a while I could.

So, you know, you've talked about how your daughter has them and she loves to wear them.

And every time I go into an Apple store, I'll put them on.

They feel so good.

You know, do I need it?

No.

But if Apple had done more, they would have tempted me.

They would have tempted me.

So that's my, that's my disappointment is you get all these new things.

It takes years to get ready.

You didn't do it.

And my favorite new feature is the one that we started out.

We started our podcast talking about today, this camera control button.

I've already talked about all the reasons I'm excited about it.

But again, I really, you know, the iPhone as a camera has been so important to me.

This looks like a really cool new feature.

Can't wait to try it.

It was even though there had been some rumors about it, as you said, we did not know that it would be, you know, as much of a trackpad as a button.

I'm really, I was very excited about the announcement.

Can't wait to try it.

I'm very excited to have an iPhone.

I love that every new iPhone model has it.

So even if you don't get the pro max double super secret, blah, blah, blah, probation, you know, whatever version of iPhone you get of this new model, you're going to get that camera control.

And I can't wait to try it out.

Very excited.

That's great.

Whoo.

Okay.

Lots of stuff to cover.

And it's been a, it's been a fun week, but it may not be as fun as next week.

I'm hoping that you get to have new toys that we could talk about.

And as I, as I, we, we have alluded to a couple of times, Monday is when iOS 18 is to be released to the public.

And so I plan on updating.

We say this almost every time, Jeff, all of our listeners don't feel like that you need to update necessarily on Monday.

Cause this is a big leap, right?

From 17.6 or whatever we're on now to 18.

We're excited about it.

Cause we've been talking about it and we'll report on that a little bit more, of course, next Friday as well, maybe with new toys and a new iOS.

I mean, come on, what else can we ask for?

That's going to be great.

So in that case, we'll talk with you next week, Jeff. - Thanks, Brad.
