Brett Burney from http://www.appsinlaw.com
Jeff Richardson from http://www.iphonejd.com
Welcome to In The News for July 25th, 2025.
That's like 25 and 25.
I am Brett Burney from appsinlaw.com.
And this is Jeff Richardson from iPhoneJD.
Hey, Brett.
Good morning, Jeff.
Good to talk with you as always.
And wow, it's a pretty big day.
I knew that the public betas of iOS 26 and iPadOS 26
and Apple Watch OS 26 were going to be coming out.
I didn't kind of keep track exactly where they were,
But you've got a great rundown from several folks, and mostly Jason Snell, I think, and over at Six Colors.
It's just great to see him writing several of these reviews because I feel like we can compare, and it's good to have him compare and see what he says.
But let's start with the public beta of iOS 26, which looks really cool.
And I think one of the things that stuck out of me when he wrote this, Jason said, is just about everything that Apple announced at WWDC about iOS 26 is actually in this public beta.
Just about everything, which is good.
I'm glad to see that that progress is there.
Yeah.
And to give credit where credit due, this one is done by Dan Moore.
And there's both Jason Snell and Dan Moore.
Oh, that's right.
Okay, man.
So the public betas are now out, which is big news for me for two reasons.
First of all, the developer betas have been around for a while, but most folks are not developers.
And so they haven't tried them.
So now the general public can get a chance.
Anyone can just flip a switch and turn it on.
Now, let's be clear.
I don't recommend that you install a beta version, even a public beta.
Although, to be fair, in history, the public betas tend to be a little bit more stable than the developer betas.
But even so, you're going to get bad, definitely worse battery life.
You're going to get crashes and stuff like that.
And so, you know, I don't think this is newsworthy because you should go out and run and install it.
If you want to be adventurous, you know, hey, go ahead.
I don't myself, except for my Vision Crow.
But I think the real newsworthy part is that we got the preview of what's coming up in the fall releases at WWDC, like you say, you know, six weeks ago or whatever.
But now, you know, the masses that are interested in being adventurous with the beta can start to look at it.
And so we're really starting to get people, you know, really kicking the tires on it and
seeing how it, you know, how it works.
And, you know, we're going to learn a lot more details that Apple never announced, you
know, maybe because there's something that doesn't work.
So this is why I'm particularly interested.
You know, this is sort of even for people like do not plan to install until this fall.
And I'm definitely one of those people.
Now you get to read something about it.
So there's been a number of articles released this week, but I really think the best ones
are the ones that are on six colors.
Dan and Jason wrote, I mean, they're essentially reviews of the operating system.
It's just the beta version of the operating systems.
And so they've been working on these for a month and they're really good.
So to get to the one on the iPhone on iOS 26, you know, the big marquee feature is liquid glass.
And we've talked about this a little bit, but it's really interesting because it's a mixed bag.
On the one hand, it really is playful, new, interesting, all that sort of stuff.
On the other hand, there are some circumstances.
I mean, just the video that you happen to be showing on the screen right now.
If you hit the little play thing, it's just a little 10 second back and forth.
When you look at that, I guess you call it a loop, L-O-U-P-E, as it goes back and forth.
Yeah, the graphical effect.
I mean, that's pretty impressive.
I mean, it's definitely eye candy for sure.
On the other hand, when you have buttons that stay in a place and the screen behind it scrolls up and down, you can get into situations where it's clear on top of something.
It's a little hard to read.
And so it's coolness versus usability and readability.
And Apple has to sort of – and they've been going back and forth.
So it's interesting.
People get to have their viewpoint on it.
At the end of the day, we've been using an iPhone long enough.
I say let's be playful.
Let's do something sort of fun.
And hopefully it won't be too bad.
But so that's like the big thing is now liquid glasses is definitely out there for people to see.
And I'm trying to think of some of the other big ones in there.
You know, the phone features that we've talked about, the lock screen is a nice one.
It's got that big number.
You know, the time is really big and stuff like that.
I like the, and this one is good for me, but perhaps even more useful for people like my dad, is these phishing protection features.
You know, one of the things I noted here was I didn't realize this, that I knew that messages and the phone app, too, were going to have folders for spam messages and for unknown callers and stuff, which is good because I'm getting, I don't know about you, Brett, but it's not, I guess probably every day I get a text message from someone that, I mean, I know it's junk, but it's just aggravating and interferes my day.
And so in the new version of it, it's going to put it in that spam folder or at least the unknown callers folder.
And it's not going to give me an alert.
So that's fine.
So I can go check it every once in a while, just like I would check a spam folder in my inbox and see if there's anything in there.
But what I did not realize is that when something's in that folder, you can't like if there's a link that says click here to update your credit card.
And of course, it's a it's a it's a bogus link that if you click it, it's going to try to, you know, hack you or something like that.
You can't even tap on it.
So like you have to manually say, no, no, this is actually a text I want.
I'm going to move it back to my inbox and then it will let you click on links or even
just reply to the message.
I mean, that is going to help a lot of people's parents, you know, put it that way and
grandparents to give them more protection.
And so that's a good one.
You know, there's a ton of other things, too, that we've talked about.
I'm just going to quickly say on that messages thing, you know, it's like it's just this cat
and mouse game just constantly.
Like we used to have calls, right?
And now we still have spam calls that come in.
But it seems like this messages, the spam messages.
In fact, I was just driving on the highway the other day and I happened to go through a toll road.
And I don't know if this is like across the nation or the world, but there was even signs on this toll road saying there are toll spam messages coming in.
Like they're even announcing this on the highway now because I don't know if you've seen these, but, you know, there's all kinds of these spam messages that come in.
And some are very, very believable.
I've gotten some before, Brett.
They're very believable.
And it's like, yeah, this is your toll.
You know, this is your, you know, pay this bill now or you're going to go in.
They're going to drag you into traffic court.
And you're like, gosh, did I maybe run a red light and not know it or something like, you know?
Right.
And you want to click to make sure, which is the whole aspect of emails, right?
I mean, that's what anytime that you and I have given, you know, presentations on like security, it's usually comes down to the user.
I don't want to say error because it's not like error.
It's just it's a good email.
It's like, well, wait a minute.
You know, how dare you say that I have something to pay?
I'm going to click this and clear it up right now.
And, of course, once you click it, that's when, unfortunately, there's some kind of issues that could happen, you know, whether it's an email message or a spam message on there.
But anyway, just wanted to input that.
that's really becoming a problem uh i feel like and i don't know what the next wave is going to be
but it's just unfortunate but i'm thrilled obviously that apple is putting this in my only concern
which isn't a concern it's just the reality of it it's like they're going to put some fixes in place
and then of course you know maybe a few months down the road people are going to find out how to
how to do an in run around it again but that's just the reality of what it is unfortunately
I mentioned one more on the new iPhone one, which is the new camera app.
You know, Apple is the camera on the iPhone is so important for so many people.
We capture so many memories.
And the new interface, it's simpler in that a lot of the controls that you are less likely
to use, some of the more fiddly things like, you know, f-stops and apertures, you know,
it's there, but it's a little bit more hidden.
And the things that you're going to use more often are more prominent.
and so it looks from the mock-ups
and now we've got the actual versions.
I think it's an improvement.
I haven't tried it yet myself,
but I know sometimes when I want to take a picture,
like, come on, I just want to take a picture.
Get all this nonsense out of my way that I don't need.
So I think this is going to be a good change
and I'm looking forward to it.
Yeah, I like that.
A couple of other things that he mentioned, Dan,
which again, this is a really nice detailed review.
Agreed.
The browser, some of the browser features here that are changing.
I feel like the Safari browser has really just integrated, you know, so many changes over the years.
I mean, every single time we come out with a new version, it seems like Safari gets a little bit of an update.
But I do like some of the things that Dan focused on here.
Again, like you were talking about, some of these buttons just look a little odd to me, you know, with this liquid glass.
I hope that they're going to continue to maybe tweak some of that on there as well.
But still good.
I'll mention one change in it that it's not one that I focused on in WWDC, but you see an example of it here.
You know how sometimes on the current iPhone, like you'll do something like let's say in a message, you'll like hold down for a second on a word and it pops up that menu.
And, you know, it might be like a formatting menu.
And so you know how it's a long bar and you see a few words and you have to swipe to see more, which is a little bit of a pain to swipe left and right.
There's a new type of menu that's across the operating system.
you see it all the place, you just happen to be showing it in the Safari app, that Apple's moving
away from those long, thin menus where you have to swipe back and forth. And they're moving into,
like, there'll be a button and you tap the button and a list pops up. And so that you have, you know,
especially because, you know, your iPhone screen's long, you can actually see things more easily.
And so this is an aesthetic that's throughout the operating system. And I didn't focus on it before.
I don't know if Apple emphasized it and I missed it, but now that I've seen more and more of it and I see people talking about it, I'm like, oh, this is a good usability improvement.
I think it's going to be easier to get deeper into options.
I like that.
I like it.
Yeah, very, very good.
Oh, okay.
So there's a whole lot more.
I don't know that we need to dwell on anymore just right now because I know we're going to be talking about this for the next several minutes as well.
I like his bits and bobs little section here at the bottom where he just goes into like the quick hits here of like the improvements to the battery setting.
Like I didn't know that we needed any improvements on that, but it is good that we'll have some of that.
The password app he talks about here, the maps app.
We talked about some of those things.
So great.
I'll make sure that we have the link to Dan's.
I keep calling it a review, but it's his first look.
But it's really good.
So did Dan also do the iPad?
No, this is Jason Snell that looked at iPad OS 26.
and again another fantastic in-depth look at this and I just like the way that Jason seems like he's
pretty excited about a lot of these changes coming to the iPad and both you and I have talked about
that like if they are actually putting everything in that they announced at WWDC this is becoming a
pretty amazing device with now that we have the hardware especially with the M4 like your iPad Pro
that we have. And if we have the capabilities here, even just the, you know, the ability to
work with multiple windows at a time, it's going to be pretty amazing.
Yeah. Jason begins this review by saying it's one of the biggest updates in iPad history.
And he's a fan. I'm a fan too. I really look forward to it. I have been tempted to install
the beta on my iPad to start using this right away. I'm not going to do it because I need the
iPad to get work done. And I can't have it being fiddly. Well, I say that out loud, Brett, but I
don't know. There are times of the day when I'm like, ah, I'm going to go for it. Who knows? We'll
see. But I have seen universal good reviews of this. Perhaps the first negative one that I saw,
it's not something I linked to today because I just saw it before I went to bed last night.
But Harry McCracken, who's been writing about tech for a long time for the past company,
he has used the iPad as his primary device. Like this is what he gets his work on primarily. He
was the first person to say, you know, I'm not, you know, if I wanted to have windows,
I would use a laptop. I prefer the iPads unique. And so, I mean, it is a viewpoint, obviously
you're going to have different viewpoints, but most folks have been like Jason enthusiastic
that we have windows that you can place wherever you want. You can, you can even have them be halfway
off the screen, halfway on the screen, the way that you would for a computer. You've got menus
now for the first time. And of course there is the danger that app developers are going to hide
things in the menus. But the flip side is, and we just talked about this on the iPhone, you know,
that discoverability thing of sliding back and forth versus having a big thing. You know,
when you want it, you want it to be simple, but you also want to have power. And that power means
you need to have lots of different options. And, you know, menu bars, as we've known for computers
since the 1980s, are a pretty good way to put that option in there, even if it's sort of hidden
out of the way. And, you know, the red, yellow, green buttons for controlling windows, you know,
if it probably makes more sense on the on a computer than an iPad. But, you know, they've
done it, you know, they've made it work that you put your finger over it and they get bigger and
stuff like that. But I think that overall, yeah, you can argue it takes away a little bit from the
uniqueness of the iPad. But I think it's a big step forward in universe and in usability and
and power features. And if you're using your iPad to get work done, I think this is great.
Now, keep in mind that, you know, if you are your or your grandmother or grandfather, you know,
doesn't want all the complication, you could turn all the stuff off in settings. And then
your iPad OS 26 in the future, when that comes out, is going to just be every app is a full screen,
period. And so, you know, I think it's the best of all worlds. It doesn't mean you have to make a
choice. But this is, you know, the windowing, multitasking, menuing system. This is the big
change in iPadOS 26. And Jason does a nice job of going through all the details of it.
He really does. I mean, you know, some have said and argued like that gap between a laptop and an
iPad is just continuing to get so much smaller. And even maybe some of the overlap here, you know,
we look at what we usually call in the Mac world, the stoplight of these buttons here, right? There's
circle for to close the window then you can have the yellow for minimize and then the green
little button would would typically maximize or make the window full screen um i gotta tell you
on my mac which i use every day i don't ever go and use those stoplight buttons i usually use
keyboard shortcuts so if i wanted to close the window i'll do command w you know something like
that um i'm hopeful because i found i've been encouraged that a lot of the keyboard shortcuts
that I have been using on the Mac for so long
do translate over onto the iPad.
You know, if I wanted to-
When you have a keyboard attached, yeah.
Right, exactly.
When I have the keyboard attached.
Right, thank you for,
because I typically always do have the keyboard attached,
which just goes to show that I think of it more
as probably like a lot,
like I barely use the iPad without the keyboard
unless I'm doing like some note-taking,
you know, with the handwriting.
But, you know, for example, like on my Mac,
if I wanted to use the search bar,
I'll do command space, right?
And that works exactly on the iPad.
So anyway, I'm encouraged and hopeful that a lot of that will come back.
Real quick, I just wanted to ask you on this.
At the very bottom here, he has his own little like, you know, multiple updates.
But there are several apps that are coming now to the iPad.
He says right now Preview, which is an app that has been on the Mac for decades.
And it really is like a default.
I think of it as a default PDF viewer, even though it can do images.
and there's a lot of other things that Preview can do, and it's been expanded.
But in fact, I use that as my default PDF viewer,
even though I have other PDF expert on my Mac,
and I also have even Adobe Acrobat.
But I'll use Preview because it's so much faster
if I just want to view the PDF, for example.
And he's saying now that that's coming to the iPad, that's pretty amazing.
Again, it's just it's blurring that line
between what Apple is thinking of as a Mac versus an iPad here.
Yeah, Preview has always been a neat little app on the Mac.
And, you know, it's one of those tiny little apps that just allows you to look at PDF files and pictures and stuff like that.
And it's just useful.
And it's not that we don't have other apps on the iPad that do it.
But now everyone is going to have this one simple app that will often be exactly what you need.
And if you want something more sophisticated, then fine.
You know, use PDF Expert or use some other app.
But are you some from photo, you know, Photoshop or whatever.
But it's going to be the nice, simple app we all have.
And I think it's going to be useful.
It's going to be like one of those things that you have in your tool belt for when you need it, you pull it out, you get your work done.
This is good.
I think as much as obviously I know so many people will be using the iPhone and the updates to iOS 26, I feel like you and I are both a little bit more excited just with the big changes coming to the iPad.
Agreed.
Agreed.
That's a good thing.
Yeah, that's a good thing.
All right.
So iPhone, iPad, let's talk about the watch.
This is back to Dan Morin now on Six Colors.
taking a look at watch OS 26.
It's not quite as pleased with some of the changes on the Apple watch.
And I think that really just comes down to the fact that liquid glass maybe
doesn't translate as well to a much smaller screen.
Yeah. Liquid glass, you know, it is what it is.
And you're not going to even notice it as much because the screen's small.
You know, if the big feature on the iPad, and it is,
is that there's the windowing, the multitasking, the menu,
all that sort of stuff.
I think the big thing, the big change coming to the Apple Watch this fall is the workout
stuff, which makes sense because that is such a big use of the Apple Watch.
And so you've got the, you know, the workout buddy, which is going to be like this, you
know, synthesized voice.
And Dan has, I think Dan, you said you were this one.
Yeah.
He has a good analogy here that I remember a long time ago, I guess it was with my iPod.
That would be right.
Did you ever have, Brett, the thing that was that little Nike sensor that you would put into a shoe and you would have the night?
You know what I'm talking about?
Yeah.
I didn't have it, but I know what you're talking about.
Yeah.
That was a big deal.
So like if you wanted to use your iPod while like I used to use it on the treadmill, you had to buy a special shoe from Nike and would have this little compartment in the shoe.
and you would purchase this little thing.
It was a tiny little round pebble
that you would put inside of your shoe
and allowed your iPod to get data from your shoe
about like how quickly you were running
and stuff like that.
But it was just, it was a very,
I mean, that was obviously long before the Apple Watch.
It was a way to get data.
But the thing that I remember about it
is they had a feature where while you're doing a workout,
actually it wasn't while you were doing a workout,
but when you were done,
a celebrity voice,
And it was typically like a, um, someone that was known like someone who won an Olympic gold medal or like a famous, you know, uh, person in, in, in, in the sports world would come on and say, you know, I am, you know, I'm so-and-so who recently won the such and such North Boston marathon.
And I'm here to tell you congratulations on a good run or whatever it was, but it was a cute little thing.
And, you know, it just, it gave, it was a tiny, silly little thing, but it gave you like a little encouragement and stuff.
And so workout buddy, he's saying it's not as good because it is a computerized synthesized voice.
I didn't realize he says you can you can choose between three different computerized voices.
And I suspect it's not going to have the character and the humor and the warmth of a real person.
But it is going to be able to provide you with the data that saves you the trouble of looking at your watch while you are working out, you know, whether you're lifting weights or on the treadmill or running outside.
And I like the idea of, you know, you don't have to glance down and you can get that information.
I think that that's I think that's a good idea.
And so I like that.
And I'm looking forward to it.
And again, for now, it's simplistic stuff.
It's, you know, for me, what I often notice is like I'm on the treadmill and my watch will tap to sort of tell me something.
I mean, a good one, for example, if I say I'm going to do a 30 minute workout, I get a tap to know I'm at 15 minutes.
And that's fine because I in my brain, I sort of have a sense I'm about halfway through it.
And so I know what that tap means.
But other times I might not know what it wants to tell me.
And it's a little awkward to look at your watch, what you're trying to run.
And so I like the idea of it, you know, just saying in my ear, you know, you just crossed over two miles or whatever, whatever it's going to say.
So I'm looking forward to it.
I think it's going to be useful.
And I like the workout buddy stuff.
There's some other improvements, too, but that's a big one for work.
Right.
I'm looking forward to trying it out.
Like, I don't know, because this to your point, let's go back to Nike now.
Dan says he's a bit biased.
He does a lot of running.
He's been using the Nike Run Club.
Sure.
Into running recently.
And it offers guided runs.
By the way, it's a real-life human coach.
And did you know this?
I didn't know that there is actually a real-life Ted Lasso.
So apparently Nike Run Club, look at this guy.
His name is Chris Bennett, I think, is what Dan says.
I've heard this before, yeah.
I mean, my goodness, he looks like Ted Lasso.
Wouldn't it be great to have the real-life Ted Lasso encouraging you?
And so Dan goes on to say, I'm going to say flat out, a synthetic voice,
which is what Apple is putting in, I think, to some extent, right,
that keeps you updated on your progress is no substitute for a real person.
And he talks about a human coach can offer thoughts and even emotional support.
So, you know, I'm kind of, I don't know that I've wanted encouragement so much when I'm run.
I'm typically either listening to a podcast or, you know, music.
So I don't know.
I'm on the fence.
We'll see what it's like.
I remember the video that Apple showed and the WWDC, and both you and I exclaimed like it was, it's Coach Emily.
It sounds like a digitized version of Coach Emily.
from the Apple workout on there.
Okay, we'll see.
The jury is still out on that,
and I'm excited to at least try it.
Bits and bobs at the bottom here quickly from Dan.
The Notes app is going to come to the Apple Watch.
That's amazing, right?
I like that.
Is that what I'm really thinking about?
Because I got to tell you,
I have answered this question
no less than three or four times from people
because they know the Notes app.
We've talked about this hundreds of times.
You've got the Notes app on your Mac.
You've got it on your iPad.
You've got it on your iPhone.
People, my kids use the Notes app for everything that they just want to grab.
And Jeff, I've had people say, oh, yeah, well, how do I get the Notes app on my watch?
I mean, surely it's on my watch, right?
It's got to be on my watch.
It's on everything else.
And I look at them, I'm like, I'm so sorry.
It's not available on your watch.
I mean, there's been other apps that I know that either we've talked about or I think I found for folks to say, here's a way that you can kind of get around that and get access to your Notes on the watch.
But it's not.
So finally, I mean, thank goodness that the Notes app is going to be available on the watch.
I don't need to like edit the note.
I just want to be able to reference the note on my watch, right?
If it's like typically if it's a grocery list or something like that.
So thank you, Apple.
Finally, I mean, I feel like that should have been done a long time ago.
Yeah, that's what and I know I'm going to find that useful because for years now, what
I have used is 1Password has an app for the Apple Watch.
And if you have a secure note in 1Password on your iPhone, you can choose which one of
those show up.
But the thing is you need to manually decide beforehand which ones you're going to put there.
And I don't use it all the time, but sometimes it's just useful to look down and see something, you know, on your wrist.
Again, grocery list is a perfect example.
Now, you can currently use the Reminders app to create a grocery list.
And that does come over to the Apple Watch.
And so I've used that before.
But I have to admit, for whatever reason, I tend to, you know, if I'm going to the grocery store and my wife, my kids, like, what do they need?
I always use the Notes app for it.
I just create a little simple list.
And I usually do the little feature that's got the little radio buttons that you can click things on and off.
And so I will absolutely use that.
I've got a simple grocery list, and I'm just in the grocery store.
And I've actually done this before.
Like I'm in the grocery store, and I'm trying to check my phone, and I'm pulling my phone out, and I'm unlocking it with one hand.
And I'm trying to make sure – it's going to be so much more convenient for me to flick my wrist, look on my wall.
So I really do, I feel like because I've got a preview of this for the past few years with
1Password, I know I'm going to like that feature.
You know.
And so that's going to be really useful.
So I'm looking forward to that.
Dan also mentions the wrist flick, which we've talked about before.
Wrist flick will be cool, yeah.
We're excited just to come in such a small little tiny thing.
But we've talked about it because I know that we are excited about it.
All right.
So iPhone, iPad, watch.
How about tvOS 26?
That public beta is now available with literal glass is what you're going to be looking at.
But there's also liquid glass that is involved in the OS now as well.
Yeah, not a big change in tvOS.
It's like you say, the interface is going to be a little different with liquid glass.
I mean, if there's a big new feature, it's something that I really don't intend to use.
And we've talked about it before that they're improving the karaoke feature so that you can use your iPhone as a microphone.
Again, you know, for the for the preteens in your house or wherever else, it'll be fun for some folks.
Not something that I plan to use, but it's a big feature.
And, you know, that's it.
Otherwise, there's, you know, some new aerial screensavers and, you know, some other little, you know, things around that.
Nothing major, but it's it's always nice to see the platform move forward.
You know, Apple TV is just one of those things that I wish it did more.
I wish it I wish we had more huge whiz.
I don't even know what they would be, but like I feel like it would be cool if it had new great new features.
And it doesn't.
And yet, you know, we all know from all the reviews that, you know, the Apple TV is just such a better streaming box than all the alternatives out there.
So it does what it needs to do.
And that's the Apple TV.
At least they haven't forgotten about it.
They're still trying to very slowly move that platform forward.
I guess that's good.
I don't know that I need anything huge.
I just want it to continue to work so well.
And it just makes me so happy.
And I smile every time that I sit down, for example, and I want to just use my AirPods to watch a show without, you know, putting on the actual speaker.
I just wanted to come in my AirPods.
And I'm like, oh, man, I'm going to have to like, do I go into the control center to turn that on?
No, I just open them up as long as it's me that's logged in because, you know, there can be other profiles on there, right?
It will see that I've opened my case, my AirPods case, and it recognizes them.
I mean, just like that.
Like, I just want it to work as easy as it does.
Both you and I are going to try out this karaoke feature when it comes out, Jeff.
And the next time that you and I are together in person, we're going to have a karaoke.
All of our listeners to do karaoke with the Apple TV.
One more update.
This was just a little one also for CarPlay.
A feature, speaking of which, on the Apple TV, I don't know if I need to watch a video in my car.
But apparently when iOS 26 comes out, I will have that option.
As long as I'm parked.
And I like how you put it.
Maybe if I just want to eat lunch in my car, which I don't normally do, but I could watch a video now on the little tiny screen in my dashboard.
Yeah, like I was like, why would I want this feature?
Because it's not like you're going to use it for your kids to watch movies while you drive long distance cross country.
Because like you said, it doesn't work while you're driving.
It's only while you're parked.
And so I was trying to think of why this would be useful.
And the author of this article, Joe Rosignol, says that, well, one use of it is if you have an electric car and you're plugged in at an EV station for 15, 20 minutes, 30 minutes to charge your car, now you can watch a video.
So I'm like, OK, I guess that's a use case.
And the other one that I mentioned and that you just mentioned was not actually from me.
It was from my son because I was sort of at the dinner table saying, like, why would somebody use this?
And I guess it just shows the way that a teenage boy uses his car differently than I do.
He's like, oh, you know, dad, if you're sitting there eating your fast food lunch in your car, then you can watch a video.
I'm like, OK, well, I don't do that as much.
But I guess that's the reason why if you're sitting there eating your McDonald's, whatever, you can watch your video.
So, you know, it's something new.
I mean, it does make sense because if you're sitting there in the driver's seat and you are parked, the biggest screen you're going to have access to is probably that CarPlay screen, right?
So I guess make it more usable.
guess because i mean you have to have your iphone connected to the car to be able to use actually
maybe but it uses airplay so it could actually i know i saw that here too well maybe it's not
wireless though maybe it does have to be physically connected i don't know how yeah i guess that's how
it works well i mean you just have to your phone would have to be plugged in yeah or bluetooth
and i feel like i mean i i guess most screens in cars are going to be a little bit bigger than the
screen on your iphone but if i wanted to watch a video i'd probably just watch it on my iphone
As opposed to, I mean, this is one of the things I'll do one time.
But of course it's mounted up, though, right?
I know, that's true.
It's mounted, so that's, you know.
Okay.
We'll see if that works.
Anyway, I'll try that one time and see if I ever need that again.
There was another big announcement from Apple this past week.
I feel like we had either talked about this before or we knew this was coming, but Apple announced AppleCare 1.
Now, if you're thinking, well, wait a minute, do I know about AppleCare?
Yes, you do.
Of course you do.
Apple has provided this warranty for quite a while.
I mean, it's gone through several different iterations.
Anytime you buy an Apple device, at least new and typically directly from Apple, you have a one-year warranty, which is amazing.
It's probably one of the best warranties in consumer, certainly consumer electronics and even, I think, in consumer shopping altogether.
Then at some point, you could buy an extra two years if you wanted to add that on.
A lot of us used to do that, so you had a total of three years.
then they started changing to like a subscription model which kind of made sense people i remember
belly ached about that jeff because um it's like i don't want to do a subscription although i felt
like for the price it's really good i still pay for two or three i think either on an iphone or
my wife's ipad and it's just good to know that if anything does happen that it will uh it will be
covered well now you have a subscription similar to what you and i do with uh apple what is the
overall subscription apple one apple um that has the tv well apple care apple care plus yeah yeah
oh you're talking about like yeah the big apple one is the right right yeah i think it's called
apple what is that called i'm trying to apple one it's the one where you get the the tv subscription
the news, the game, the arcade, the fitness, Apple Fitness, all of that together. Well, now Apple
Care One is one big subscription for multiple devices. So I know I spent probably a little too
long explaining that there, Jeff, and you could do a little bit better, but you did a great write-up
this past week about Apple Care One, and I thought you did a great job of kind of leaning on some other
reviews and other people that have been talking about these extended warranties. I think this is
a good deal, and that's a good point that you made in your blog post as well. Yeah, and I think that's
the reason that Apple has had such success with it. I mean, one industry source says that it's the
most successful extended warranty program, you know, for anyone. They make so much money on it.
But I think it works because it's good. I mean, Apple usually tries to treat you pretty well.
I mean, not all the times. I mean, sometimes you have something broken and you're frustrated that
you just have to buy a new one. But if you have this program, you get some good things. And I think
that by going through the history of it, as you did, you know, Apple Care started in the late 1990s,
I believe, and then AppleCare Plus.
And then they went from paying for it all at once
to a monthly thing.
And this is the next iteration on it,
that it's a monthly thing you pay for,
20 bucks a month,
and you get whatever three products you want covered,
you get it.
And unlike in the past,
you don't have to just do it
when you first buy a product within the first 60 days.
You can even add something that you've had
that's up to four years old,
which is interesting.
I'm thinking about that for my daughter
because like she has a, she's a senior in high school
and she has a MacBook that we got for her
when she was a freshman.
So as I'm thinking about this out loud, Brett,
I guess it's out of,
because I did get the three-year warranty
because, you know, kids drop laptops.
But like, it's probably just about to expire.
And so this would be a way for me to take it
and move it into something.
And then again, if she gets a new laptop
when she goes to college with this program,
you know, AppleCare One, you can swap things out.
So if you get a new computer, if you get a new iPhone,
You just swap out the old one for the new one.
There's two questions here.
You know, the first question is, is AppleCare worth it?
And this is the question that has been true for decades.
And as I put in my article, there's no good answer.
I was listening to our buddy, David Sparks, on a podcast the other day, and he said that
he heard somebody in the insurance industry say that attorneys are the best customers for
insurance companies.
Because like, as you know, Brett, once you go to law school, you see risk everywhere.
and you understand it like you become much more risk-averse.
It changes the way you view.
And so you decide, well, you know, I'd rather pay a little money now
so that if something bad goes wrong, I'll have protection.
And so, or you could say, I'm going to save the money.
I'm going to cross my fingers and pray and just hope that I never drop my iPhone.
And then I end up saving all that money.
You know, there's no good answer as to whether AppleCare works or not.
You just have to go with your gut and decide if it's worth it.
And sometimes I've got it and I've never used it.
And I'm like, well, that I threw away money.
And then other times I didn't have it.
And I kicked myself like last year when my when my Apple Watch broke like a month before I was going to I knew I would replace it.
And I ended up, of course, for me, it ended up there was a silver lining because it gave me a chance to explore the ultra and stuff.
But I was so aggravated that like it would I would have basically had to buy a whole new one and I wasn't ready to buy a new one.
So having and then I've had times where I had it and it worked like for my iPhone, I typically don't get it.
But I did get it like back when the iPhone 10 came out years ago, because that was the first time that we had like the big screen that was no button on it anymore.
And I'm like, gosh, with all this bigger screen, I'm more likely to break it and crack it.
So you just go with your gut.
But Apple wants to nudge you over when you're on that line between do you get it, do you not get it?
They want to make it as easy as possible to encourage you to get it.
And so, you know, with this new program, you have a little more encouragement to get it because it's a good deal.
So if you decide you want AppleCare, well, then the question is, do you want the traditional thing?
And they still offer that, you know, AppleCare Plus.
You can just get it for a single device if you want.
But if you get AppleCare One, then you get all three devices.
And, you know, whether it's cheaper or not, it's going to usually be pretty close.
Like this $20 a month is an easy price to understand, but it's a strategic price for
Apple because if you have lesser expensive Apple products, like if you've got the SE version
of the Apple Watch, and if you've got the low cost version of the iPhone and you have
like an iPad. If you have cheaper Apple products, it's probably a tiny bit cheaper just to get
individual warranties. But if you have more expensive Apple products, you have the pro
version of the iPhone or the pro version, or you have the nicer Apple watch, well, then you're
going to actually save a little bit of money by having this program. It's going to be a little
bit cheaper. And it's not just a matter of being cheaper. It's actually better too, because, you
know, Apple for a few years now has had this theft and replacement thing for the iPhone that, you
know, if your iPhone screen is cracked, you bring it in and with Apple care, they fix it, you know,
but if your iPhone's gone, you know, how do you, Apple doesn't know if you're just lying about it
being stolen. And so you have to pay like a deductible. It's not a free new iPhone, but it's
a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new one and paying over a thousand dollars or whatever it is.
And so they have extended this theft and, um, and, and loss program from the iPhone. If you have
this new program, AppleCareOne, you can also get it for your iPad and for your Apple Watch. So you
don't have to worry about, you know, I went on vacation, I left my Apple Watch at the hotel room,
and now it's a gone con. So you get additional value with this program, plus it might be just
a little bit cheaper for you. And it's certainly convenient just to have this one thing that you
can see on your devices. So I really do think people should look at it. And if you're like me,
You've been on the fence.
Now, if you're really like me and you own an Apple Vision Pro, well, this is a no-brainer
because I had already been paying $25 a month just for my Apple Vision Pro protection.
And since I can include that in this, I'm right off the bat saving $5.
And then the other ones are free.
And in fact, I had an interesting choice.
So before yesterday, I had three different devices I was paying for Apple Care on.
My iPhone, my vision, and I'm sorry, not my iPhone, my vision pro, my iPad, my iPad pro,
you know, the big iPad I've got here and my Apple watch.
And I only bought it for the Apple watch because I was so mad that I didn't have it last year.
And I would have, as I just described, I'm like, okay, I'm buying it.
Cause it's only like $3.99 a month for the Apple watch.
I'm like, and I have got the more expensive Apple watch, the one that's like the titanium.
And so I'm like, I'm going to buy it.
So those were the three I had.
So I just assumed Brett that I was going to take those three devices and move them into
this new AppleCare one. But then when I thought about it, I'm like, you know, I definitely put
my Vision Pro in because that's cheaper. That's a no brainer. And I'm going to move my iPad Pro in
because I had been paying like, I don't know, 12 bucks, 13 bucks. You know, it was one of the more
expensive AppleCare programs. And so I'm going to put that in it too. So that's great. And then I
was about to move my third device, my watch in it. And then I realized, you know, I only pay
$3.99 a month for AppleCare Plus for the watch, which is not a lot. And if I instead put my iPhone
in this program, which I didn't previously have protection, I'm like, well, maybe that's a good
way to do it. Because that way, if something happens, if I happen to drop my iPhone, you know,
I don't use a case on my iPhone, even though my wife rolls her eyes at me all the time,
but I just don't like having a case. And, you know, again, I usually don't. Way, way, way back
when, when you, you know how you said before, Brett, that it used to be Apple care was something
you got for three years of protection. I used to think that was a waste because I typically get a
new iPhone every year. And so I'm like, why am I buying three years protection? But again, those
days are gone because now it's a monthly thing. So even during that first year, you just pay for
Apple care monthly for a year. So, but just because of that old tendency, I wasn't getting it, but,
but anyway, so long story short, as you can see what on this screenshot right here, I decided
yesterday, you know what? I'm going to keep paying $399 a month for my Apple Watch outside of this
program because it's pretty cheap, but I'm going to move my iPhone 16 Pro Max in here. And so now,
and again, I will probably only own my iPhone for another couple of months. I suspect I'm going to
get a new iPhone this fall that we'll see what Apple announced in September, but I have to assume
that in two months, I'll get a new one, but that's fine. I'll just swap this one out and replace the
protection because you can move things in and out. And so now I once again have protection for my
iPhone. And you know, there's a little bit, you just sleep a little bit sounder knowing that if
I drop my phone, if I crack the screen, if something breaks on it, you know, now I have
AppleCare, which means I'm going to have a heck of a lot less hassle if I go into an Apple store to
get it fixed. Plus it'll be cheaper too. So again, maybe I'll look back in a year and say, ah, that
was a waste. I never ended up using it. But even if I don't technically use it, there's something
to be said for just, you know, sleeping better at night. So, so, I mean, I've talked about this a
while Brett, you mentioned to me that, did you say that you have three different devices you pay for
it right now? You pay individually for AppleCare? I think I have three. I have to go, you know,
it's kind of hard to figure it out. Like I know that it just automatically gets billed to my Apple
credit card every month on some of those. So I have to look at it. And I think I just stopped my Apple
Care that I was paying every month for my iPad Pro because my iPad Pro I've had for three years. And
I guess I just had that stuck in my head. It's like, well, after three years, maybe I don't need
it because it's like I would just probably buy a new one at that point and I don't know that I need
to get it replaced you know it's it's those kind of things that I that I think of as well in there
but I did see this come through and in fact it's in my settings app because I don't know that most
people would know like that's where you would go now like this screenshot I think is from your
settings app right you go into your settings correct and in fact mine pops up with this and
maybe some people have been getting this message there's a little red number one on your settings
on a badge on your settings app now.
And if you go in, it says you can update your,
at least for me, it says a renew AppleCare coverage.
Or then if I go in, I can add it or I can do it.
Anyway, I saw this screenshot on here as well.
And I just chose not to do it quite yet.
But as you say, the 1999.
Think about it.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Maybe it's not worth it,
but I'll be curious to see what you do.
Yeah.
Well, I'm going to go and look at it
because I make sure that I'm going to point people
to your post because you did all the calculation
in here, or at least the helpful calculations. The way that you were saying it was nice is,
you know, it's like you need to think about if you would pay for it individually versus,
you know, paying this $19.99 a month now that covers the three devices. You can actually cover
more than three devices, but each additional device costs $5.99 a month. And so-
Yeah, and that's why I didn't put my watch in it because I'm paying $3.99 for my watch. There's no
reason to pay two more bucks just to have a part of the same plan. I guess maybe convenience would
for it, but there's no reason. But, but yeah. I'm going to look at this. And also, because maybe
people would be asking about this. You had another link to a story here is that if you're currently
paying for AppleCare for some of your devices, I think this story from Andrew or an Apple Insider,
you said that they'll, they'll re like Apple will do the automatic reimbursement, right? For
the charges you were doing if you switched to AppleCare one. Yeah. So if you bought like a
three-year plan ahead of time, and maybe you're only like, you know, 10 months into that three-year
plan, well, that would be a waste of your money if you switch services. So Apple will prorate what
time is left and give you a discount. If you were previously paying a monthly plan, which I guess I
was, so maybe I'll actually get some, I haven't seen it happen yet. Maybe I'll see some tiny
pro rata reimbursement for me as well at some point in the future. But yeah, so you get the
money back. So I mean, Apple's trying to be fair here. They're not trying to double charge you for
something. And I feel like anytime that I've done this, just in dealings with Apple, that
reimbursement will come back. Either they'll do it as maybe, you know, a credit for your next month
or something like that. Or for me, since I have the Apple credit card, that's everything. Everything
Apple just goes on that credit card. And so a lot of times I'll see that reimbursement come on there.
And I feel like it's always gone pretty well. Anyway, well, thanks for explaining all of that,
because I did see that the Apple one care and, you know, some people are probably rolling their
eyes yet another subscription. But I really appreciated the way that you walked people
through this, Jeff. And in fact, you know, please read through this because if nothing else, it'll
just help you make the decision for you because everybody's going to be a little bit different.
Should you get AppleCare? I think having AppleCare is great for all the reasons you mentioned,
but in each person's specific situation, it may make a little bit more sense or not depending on
what it is. And you have to check if those devices are covered. If you don't have three devices to
be covered, I feel like don't do this. Like I don't, I mean, I feel like you should take full
advantage of it, especially like Division Pro, which most people are not going to have.
But I feel like you have to make your own calculation decision, and I'm glad that you
provided that information there, which is good.
One other quick, you actually started your blog post off with the foldable, not a foldable
iPhone, a foldable Android device, but you had a nice little twist in your story here
because what we are seeing from a Samsung device, potentially, maybe, possibly one day,
could appear in an iPhone.
And that got me excited.
Yeah.
I mean, in a perfect world, this is a great idea.
It's a iPhone.
And then if you want a bigger screen, like you're just sitting on your couch and you
want to see things a little bit bigger, you make it into a bigger device.
I mean, it totally makes sense.
The problem is, is that for years now, especially the early versions of them, they had these
big, ugly seams where you unfold it and they were totally finicky and the screen wasn't
responsive.
I mean, that first generation was laughably bad.
But, you know, even as people were laughing at it, and I was perhaps one of them, I was
guilty of that, there was still a kernel of goodness in there.
It's just something to be improved.
And that's the nice thing about the Android world is that we all get to see manufacturers,
if they come up with the device and they only sell, you know, 50,000 of the units, that's
fine because at least they're trying something new.
You know, Android devices had big screens before iPhone devices did.
And then when they became popular, I think Apple's like, oh, that makes sense.
Maybe we'll do it.
And so I feel like this could be the same thing.
You know, Samsung, who makes displays for iPhones, it's interesting to me how the same
company, they have their own proprietary product, but then they also sell it to Apple.
And you think of them being competitors, but, you know, Samsung's a big conglomerate.
They make all sorts of things.
They make, you know, refrigerators and dishwashers too.
And so this latest version, I mean, the early reviews is that the Galaxy Z Fold 7, from a hardware standpoint, they say it's pretty good.
I mean, when you have it folded up, it's really about the same size as a bigger iPhone.
And when you have it unfolded, maybe a little bit more narrow, but when you have it unfolded, it's almost a square-ish screen.
It's not a complete perfect square, but it's pretty close to a square screen.
And the fold is not obvious at all anymore.
And, you know, it's got this hinge in the back.
And one of the rumors is that Apple has an even better version of the hinge for their
first day to release something.
But, you know, it's almost like an iPad mini.
And I can totally see, you know, I'm on the couch in bed at night and I want to have a
little bit of a bigger screen, but I'm not going to take the trouble to get up and go
find my iPad.
It's just use the device that you have.
I think this is a good idea.
Now, the problem with the Samsung version of it, and I will admit some bias here, but
I think this is well-founded bias.
The Android operating system is pretty robust for the iPhone, for a smartphone, excuse me.
It's not my preference.
I prefer iOS, but it's robust.
But where the Android operating system has traditionally fallen flat is for an iPad type
device, a tablet device, because they don't have any really good Android tablets.
And so app makers don't really think of, you know, app designers don't really make their
apps for it.
And so that's going to be the problem with the Samsung device is if you get the built
in apps. And I noticed that all of their preview shots, they show like the specific app that Samsung
is making to show your calendar. That's going to be well formatted. You know, this is your today
screen. They're going to do a good job of formatting that for the screen. But when it comes to using
third-party apps that are not designed for it, you're going to have some issues. But on the iPhone
and the iPad world, that would be great because if Apple made a product like this, everybody has
great iPad apps that already know how to move to different sizes. Heck, we were just talking about
how this fall, you'll be able to make a window any size at all that you want, which means that
app developers know that you have to have any stride. So one of those sizes could be a square,
right? And so it would work perfectly well on a device like this. I mean, think of Instagram,
for example, if you're an Instagram user, where like the pictures are traditionally square,
you know, squarish, you know, wouldn't it be cool to have your iPhone be unfolded? You can have like
a big, you know, see the Instagram pictures really big. So I think this is a great idea.
We've heard the rumors for a while that this was coming for the iPhone. Sometimes I, you know,
you can't believe the rumors, but in this case, I'm hoping, let's just put it that way. Who knows
if the rumors are true, but I'm hoping that Apple is taking a look at what Samsung is doing this year
and saying, you know what, we're ready. And so if you, if you follow the rumors out,
what the rumors say is that this fall, Apple's going to have the regular iPhone and they're
going to have a special thin version of it, which will probably be more expensive. And for people
that want something really, really thin, you know, thin is in. And so I don't know if that I will get
the thin iPhone, but some people will. But the rumor is that the reason Apple wants to first try
something really thin is that is the launching point for taking something that's thin and foldable
so that you can fold it in half and unfold it. And then that, so that maybe in 2026,
we will see a foldable iPhone.
So we'll see that, you know,
hey, if you want to be living the future today
and you don't mind jumping ship
to the Android operating system,
you can give the Galaxy Z Fold 7 a shot.
But otherwise you can just sort of be sitting
on the sidelines like me and saying,
yeah, maybe this is something here for the iPhone.
I filed this under, it's going to happen.
I'm just not patient enough for it.
We've talked about foldable phone screens for so long
and I'm ready.
Like, let's do it.
And to an extent, I feel like, you know, we talked so long about maybe buttons under a screen or even just the fact that we had a microphone or camera behind the screen.
That's there now.
We sort of have that in some ways.
Let's go.
Let's go with the foldable.
It'll happen.
A quick update on a rumor.
We've talked about what most people have called a HomePod with a screen on it.
But you uncovered something, or actually Julie Clover and Mac Rumors uncovered something, and you reported on it, Jeff, that maybe this could be coming a little bit more of a reality.
I'm still not sure that I need this, a HomePod with a screen, but it could be coming.
I want a foldable screen more than I want this, but this could still be coming too.
You know, things cross over from rumor into, wow, this is going to really happen when something leaks out and Apple shows its hand.
And apparently that happened here because she has the quote that if you have iOS 26, you know, the beta version we're just talking about.
And if you go to it for the home, like there's some setting that's a text string in there that says your HomePod won't be able to show you the local weather.
And you're like, wait a minute, show me the local weather.
My HomePod doesn't show me diddly squat.
I know it's got a tiny little screen on the top of it that just has colors on it, but it's certainly not a display that shows you things.
So why would Apple have an engineer write a sentence that talks about the HomePod showing you things?
That is a pretty big tell that they are working on a version of the HomePod with a screen.
Some people call it the HomePod because it's like a cross between the HomePod.
And I think, although I didn't note it here, I think someone else has, they found some other string that calls it the HomePod touch or something like that.
I forget what it is.
But so it seems to me that we now, now it doesn't mean that Apple's going to release the device.
I mean, Apple has had things in the labs before that they never release, but they must have something in their lab, a version of the HomePod at the screen.
And, you know, and I could see this being useful.
I have HomePods in my living room and I use them for listening to music.
But I know that some people really like these Aura, like it's a display that shows pictures.
It's like a digital photo screen.
And my wife's mom has one and it's cool because we can upload pictures and she gets to see the pictures of the kids and stuff.
And I could totally see in my living room replacing one of my HomePods with a HomePod with a screen.
And maybe we would show photos on it, used as a digital photo album.
It would probably use the same widget technology that is coming to CarPlay, that is already on the standby mode in the iPhone,
where you could show like a widget of the time, a widget of the calendar, a widget of, you know,
when a flight's going to land. I suspect that that's what they'll do. And I could see that
being useful. It seems like Apple has all the pieces in place to do it. They know how to make
little screens. They know how to make a high palm pod. They know how to do the widgets.
Why not put it all together? So I suspect Apple will come out with this device. Does this mean
they're going to come out with it this year, next year? Who knows? But, you know, with this,
with this you know tell i think it's sort of confirmed that apple's working on something like
this in the show let's do a quick rundown of several things you reported on with apple mostly
with apple tv plus and this picture may have been the most exciting thing for me to see did this
actually get posted by tim cook it is noted apple leaker tim cook yes noted apple leaker come on tim
Season 4 of Ted Lasso, this has all of the characters sitting at a Kansas City barbecue location.
What does that mean?
There's lots of speculation.
I've been on this wagon.
I'm on the side of I don't think that we need a Ted Lasso Season 4.
I'm sure that there's many, many people on the quite opposite side of me.
But just seeing this just made me smile again to see all of these actors back in back together again.
Hopefully the characters we love. Yeah. I suspect that Jason Sudeikis also did not think we need a season four.
And then Apple backed up the truck full of money and said, here you go.
And he decided to do it. You know, Ted Lasso ended, you know, spoiler alerts if you haven't seen Ted Lasso.
But but Ted's you know, the show ended season three with Ted Lasso going back to the United States, going back to his home in Kansas City.
And the rumors behind the scene is that Jason Sudeikis, you know, didn't want to spend his entire year filming in London.
And so one solution to that would be, you know, what if the gang in London decides to come to America and convince Ted Lasso to go back and join them?
I mean, that's my theory as to what this is.
And so I suspect that this is a still frame from, you know, the characters from London coming over to America to try to convince Ted Lasso to come back.
But it gives him the ability to film in America. And it also, as I said in my post, you know, it was such it was always funny in Ted Lasso to see him reacting to the things that are unique to British culture in London and stuff like that.
And so, you know, wouldn't it be funny just to see the opposite, to see Keely, you know, remarking at something, you know, very American that she's just not used to.
You know, so I think the formula is there for humor, for comedy.
And so it's, but again, we knew that Ted Lasso season four is coming.
It's nice that we can now see the photo proof of it.
And who knows when this comes out, but it makes me excited.
I'm sure when it comes out, it will make us all smile.
Ted Lasso has won Emmys and you linked to a story about Apple maybe winning some additional Emmys, right?
I think what we're looking at Severance, of course, we're looking at the studio.
several other shows that might be up for an Emmy. I'm not sure when the Emmys come out, but
pretty exciting that Apple may be in the running again for this.
The reason I linked to this story is that I did not realize that apparently it's pretty rare
for a single network to win both Best Comedy and Best Drama. And, you know, it's happened in the
past. Some examples here was back in 2017 and 2016, HBO had both Veep and Game of Thrones.
And if you go back even further, NBC had Friends and the West Wing both winning.
But, you know, if ever Apple had a chance to do it, people love Severance as a drama.
People love the studio, especially Hollywood insiders who are going to be voting in the Emmys, love the studio for best comedy.
I think that there's a real chance.
And boy, wouldn't that be a feather in the cap of Apple if they won?
You know, obviously lots of other awards, too.
But if they won both best comedy and best drama, that would be something to crow about.
And so it was interesting for Joe Reed to point out that that's a real possibility this year.
Nobody knows.
We'll find out.
So I thought that was an interesting little take on it.
You also mentioned that if you missed seeing the F1 movie in IMAX, it's coming back to screens in IMAX.
You saw it in IMAX theater, I think, right?
I did.
And there was a rumor that the reason that Apple released it the week before July 4th weekend was because they only could book the IMAX screens for a limited period of time.
because then some of the other big blockbusters that came out.
And as I'm sitting here, like I think one of them was Superman.
And there was a couple other ones that were already going to use those big IMAX screens.
And so F1 did not get quite as long as a run on the big IMAX screens as it would have
if it wasn't for the competition of other big blockbuster movies.
And so, but according to this article, it's apparently pretty rare for a movie to come back
to an IMAX screen after it leaves.
And so I think that that tells you something that, you know, F1 had some staying power.
in the theater. And I think it's already crossed over $400 million now. It's, I think it's one of
the most successful Brad Pitt movies ever, which tells you something. And so if it comes back to
the IMAX screens in August, if you didn't have a chance to say it, I mean, we talked about this in
the past, but like, I loved the movie. I thought it was great fun. I mean, is, is, is it, you know,
the Godfather? No, but is it totally fun? You're going to have a fun summer movie. Absolutely. I
loved it. My son loved it. We still talk about it a little bit. And so if you, you know, if you
have an IMAX theater in your hometown and you missed it the first to go around come August I
encourage you to check it out it's it's totally fun it's really fun you're gonna love it and see
yeah and it's the sort of movie you want to see a big screen yeah I don't know if I've can remember
the last time I went to an IMAX theater which is sad and I don't know if that's a reflection on me
a reflection on the fact that we don't have very many IMAX theaters anymore but now I'm I'm interested
it my my daughter went and watched it and she said yeah you told me that she really had a good time
i don't think they went to an imax theater but um i might have to ask her and see because she was
telling me that i would i would probably like it i think my son would probably enjoy it too
so you should watch it brad i mean if you've got nothing else one one one nice day you want some
air conditioning i encourage you to go it's it's worth it's worth your money i always enjoy look
forward to the little video that you post at the end of your post but today this may have been the
most disappointing video for me because I'm like, well, this looks like it's going to be fun.
And I click through it and it's a countdown. So in one way, it's the most disappointing video.
And the other way, I'm pretty excited because apparently later today on Friday, July 25th,
Apple is going to reveal a new show. Is this right? And it's from the creator Vince Gilligan,
who if you don't know that name, he actually created Breaking Bad, which was an amazing series.
And also, I think Better Call Saul, right?
Did he work on that as well?
Yeah, the follow-up he did, yeah.
All of these shows that we're just talking about,
there's some excitement building for a new show.
Didn't you say here that Apple has already signed up for two seasons on this
before it's even out?
Like, what is this going to be?
The show apparently is Happiness is Contagious.
Yeah, and they did that three years ago.
So this show's been in development for a long time.
And again, unless, you know, if you download and listen to this podcast the second that
Brett posted later on today, well, then maybe this, maybe this will still be in the future.
But I suspect that by the time most people listen to this podcast, we will be past, you
know, three o'clock in the afternoon on Friday.
And so you'll actually, you know, be able to know and see what it is.
But, but this, you know, Vince Gilligan is great.
He, you know, way back when I used to love the X-Files in the late nineties and the early
two thousands.
And he was one of the big writers on that.
And that was, you know, when he was much younger.
And so he is, but, you know, you know, X-Files, Breaking Bad, you know, when it comes to drama, when it comes to intrigue, when it comes to really good characters, he's great.
He's great.
And so there was apparently a big bidding war three years ago between, you know, Netflix and Apple and everybody else.
And Apple got the rights to this show.
And, I mean, they've been working on it for so long.
And it stars one of the two stars of Breaking Bad, Rhea Saurian Seahorn, who's a great actress.
And the one thing that I saw, I think it was in the Deadline article, is Vince Gilligan made some comment that he has done so much with the anti-hero characters.
You know, the star of Breaking Bad, who, of course, is the high school professor that turns bad, right?
It's almost like a Tony Soprano type character.
And he's like, I want to do something different.
So my thinking is that she will not be playing, you know, a bad guy that you cheer for, but instead she'll probably be more of a heroic character.
Again, more will be revealed this afternoon.
But I'm excited because as we were just discussing, Apple TV Plus, they have fantastic shows.
They're hitting it out of the park.
And when you put together great talent and Apple's big money bags to pay for development, this has the potential to be the next good thing, next big thing.
But I'll end by saying that it's funny that you were sort of joking about the video because I can't remember Apple ever announcing a TV show like this with like a countdown timer on YouTube that if you click on it, it's counting down the seconds until the announcement.
So they're doing something new, which is sort of fun.
It just occurs to me three years ago, the way you're saying it, I mean, I guess we even have the first season of Severance at that three years ago.
No, no.
Maybe just barely.
I forget.
We may have had Ted Lasso.
The point that I'm making is like you said, you talked about a bidding war.
I mean, there, that was some chances taken on both sides here, right?
It's like he had to be convinced that Apple TV was going to be, I mean, there's no way
we could have imagined three years ago what Apple TV plus is today.
Right.
And so it's like, he took a chance that, you know, Vince Gilligan had to take a chance.
And I feel like Apple had to take a chance to be like saying, this is our vision.
This is what we see.
This is the kind of shows we're doing.
Anyway, that says a lot, I think, right there, that three years ago they were able to get this.
No matter how the show is, we know the show is going to be at least pretty good, but it's probably going to be fantastic.
And the fact that they took a chance that long ago is pretty telling, I think, as well.
I just consulted the fact checkers for our podcast, a.k.a. Wikipedia, and they've informed me that season one of Ted Lasso premiered in August 2020.
So, yes, three years ago, at least Ted Lasso was a hit.
But still, it wasn't the day today.
So, okay.
In the know.
In the know.
I wanted to give an update on something that I know we talked about a while, maybe three weeks ago or something.
I finally invested in some cameras for the house, specifically the UFeed cameras.
I had a chance to get several of these.
I have now finally installed them.
But today I just wanted to talk about the video doorbell.
So most people, I'm sure a lot of people already have it.
I know you've had this or an older version of this Eufy doorbell camera, but I finally got this installed.
And it took a while, mainly because this, first of all, there's a way that you can do, this can be battery powered.
So you don't even have to replace your old doorbell.
But we had an old doorbell and I didn't, I wanted to just to use the power.
The Eufy E340 will work with using your current doorbell wires, which are very low voltage.
It's not even really going to shock you.
And it's just the fact that you can put them into the back of this doorbell camera, and it'll continue to keep it powered.
And I guess I was trying to think, like, if your power goes out, then the battery is getting charged, and so the battery will then take over if your power goes out.
Anyway, very simple to do that.
So that wasn't the big deal.
Well, actually, can I stop you there?
Did you install that yourself?
Did you do the wires?
I did.
So you were able to?
Okay, good, good.
So it's not too complicated.
Yeah, see, I just unscrewed the old doorbell, which was, I mean, a truly old doorbell.
The house is from like 1978.
So I think it was original.
So it was like one of these old doorbells, not even like the up and down.
I mean, it was truly like a little, tiny, small circle button there.
And so I had to unscrew that.
And there are literally just two wires.
And again, very low voltage.
The only thing is that if you touch the two wires together, your doorbell will ring inside.
So that's all that you had to do.
And so on the back of it, I know one of these pictures probably shows this, but there's just the two little screws.
I think you can see that up there at the top, or you have to take this back off.
And there's the two little screws there, and you just kind of put them in.
And the Eufy, I got to tell you, Eufy does great because the wires that came off my doorbell since they were so old were just like the naked wire, right?
I mean, there wasn't like a, I mean, I could have like turned that wire around the screw,
but Yuffie provided the ability for these, these nice little, I don't even know what you call them,
but I, it's a, it's a little hook that just kind of like shoves up right into the screw.
And it was easy to like screw that on and to put that together and then attach it to the doorbell.
But the, one of the main reasons that it took so long for me is because we have vinyl siding.
And so this is the typical vinyl siding that most people will have on there.
And I didn't want to put a flat version of my doorbell on vinyl sliding because there was going to be like a gap in the back of this.
So you mentioned this a few weeks ago.
You got this crazy little, yeah.
It was, it's called doorbellmounts.com.
And I got to tell you, I'm going to give full credit to this gentleman that does this.
I guess he has a 3D printer and he, for $20, will send you this little mount that you can put on the back.
And so it goes now flush with your vinyl siding.
And it's a whole thing.
The reason I like this is because he provides so much great detail in here.
And he talks about it like you have to make sure you've got the right kind of sliding.
I had no idea that there were different kinds of vinyl sliding and Danish ship sliding.
It's just all kinds of crazy stuff.
But I went out and measured it.
He has a whole YouTube video that tells you exactly what to do.
And I got it.
And as you can see in this picture right here, it was amazing.
It makes you feel so happy to put this on.
And it fits the sighting perfectly.
It makes me so happy.
In addition to that, you can have the doorbell going flat.
And so it just looks out straight.
But because the doorbell, the old doorbell, was obviously to the right and kind of almost like belly button height for most people.
at the door i wanted that camera to be slightly tilted to the left so okay so you know what i'm
talking about there well yuffie again provides a little shim in there so they can put it over
yeah a little wedge in there well the good thing about this gentleman at doorbellmount.com or as
companies called nearly new models is that he has it compatible with that little shim that little
wedge that you put in there so i am so happy and pleased with the way this goes it looks like
it was installed by a professional and having both of these things and now going back to the camera it
my wife and i are just thrilled with this because there is on this it's a two camera one goes straight
out so you can see people that like the height you know see the face but then there's another camera
that points down so that if somebody comes and leaves a package you can see that it's there and
you know sometimes you get packages delivered and you'll get a notification on your on your messages
app or something but then we'll get home and we'll forget about it so the package sits out there
but now this will tell you it gives you a little bit of message like there's been a package that's
left there and then just the other day I was traveling but my wife was home and it says your
package has been picked up because I could go and look and see sure enough my wife went out the door
picked the package up and it alerted me to this so I know we're behind the bandwagon and late on
a lot of this on the doorbell side with the camera but I just have to say I'm very very happy with
And thanks to you, Jeff, you know, I wanted something that was HomeKit compatible.
But for a couple of reasons that you explained, I think the last time we talked about this, I've not even connected it to HomeKit.
I kept using the Eufy app and the Eufy app has been fantastic to use as well.
I'm just very happy with overall the experience with the Eufy cameras, specifically with this doorbell and even the app as well.
It's been it's been going very well.
Yeah. So and so now you have these.
If somebody comes to your house, you can get a notification if you want.
You've got recordings.
And so if you want to look back and see what something happens and, you know, if you want
to be a little noise, nosy as a parent, you can see that, you know, your kids, you know,
got home from school or left.
I mean, you get those sort of things.
The the issue that, you know, we sort of think about is notifications on it.
The street that I live in, I mean, I live in the city.
I live in New Orleans and I live on a street that has a decent amount of foot traffic.
And so if I have notifications turned on every time somebody walks down my sidewalk, I get
notifications all the time.
And so I actually have my notifications.
Technically, I have the notifications turned on on my iPhone for the Eufy app, but I have
the sound turned off, which means that I technically have sound off anyway, but for my Apple Watch,
I don't get tapped.
But the alert does show up.
And so sometimes I'll just glance down on my Apple Watch or my Apple phone and I will
see the alert that somebody walked by.
My wife, on the other hand, she actually prefers to get the notifications, even if it means
She was traveling recently to see her mom, and she still got notifications whenever we would
got in.
And she just sort of liked knowing what's going on at the house.
It gives you security.
So if you want to get the notifications all the time, have it turned on.
If not, have it turned it off.
Just yesterday, I turned it on for a few hours because even though I was here at the office,
I knew that something was being delivered at my house, and I wanted to make sure that
somebody brought it inside who was home.
And so I decided to turn on my notifications for the day, and it was nice.
I like it.
And I also like being able to go back in time and see videos and stuff, the recordings.
Another nice feature of the Eufy is that even if it's not recording over the time, I don't know if you've got this turned on, Brad, if it's by default or I had to turn it on.
There's a feature with Eufy cameras.
I think it's both the camera and the doorbell.
I know it's on the camera that you can have it take a snapshot every, I want to say it's 15 minutes or something like that.
I think you control it.
Do you have this feature turned on?
Look at it.
I don't know that I have that one turned on.
do if you go find it in the settings what it means is like just out of curiosity if you would like to
say you know for the last 24 hours what happened outside my house it will take those still frames
that it records every like i say for every five minutes every 15 minutes whatever you have the
setting on and it'll do like a little stop frame movie that you know where everything's sped up
right but and it's sort of fun to watch because like when you're watching outside the front of the
house you see like the shadows move of like the sun the sun rises the sun sets it's a fun little
feature. So check that out. And also if something important changes, like it's like, you know,
there was this car parked across the street. When did that car get there? You can do that sort of
time-lapse thing and you can say, okay, well, it's not there at one in the afternoon, but it is there
at one 30. And so that's what you think. Plus again, it's nice to have the different cameras
together because I know you know this because you have not only the doorbell camera, but you have
some of the standalone cameras. And so you can get it like if, you know, God forbid it was a,
it was a bad guy at your house, or even if it's something, you know, good, you know,
when is somebody coming over?
Like you can see them go from one camera to the other camera and that's sort of cool.
I would just tell you quickly, I'm traveling.
My wife was walking the dog, you know, went around the house.
And sure enough, I've got one camera that is the, I think it's the S30 or the S3 Pro,
which is a bigger camera, but it shows her going out of the garage.
And then a few seconds later, I got a notification from the doorbell camera
because it's followed somebody around yeah she was walking the dog around the house and so
but that's really nice like again the the whole experience with ufee products you've been talking
about them for so long and i i have to say just very impressed the fact that it says it calls it
like a multi-camera you know notification because it shows like hey we saw this person here and then
this camera also saw this person just wanted to put this together for you and in the same way like
you were describing it kind of put it together and you know gave me a little kind of a a quick movie
on that but again that could be helpful right because if you wanted to see somebody walking
around different areas and you know is that the same person i mean just really really great stuff
and i should say this video doorbell e340 the one that i'm talking about it's 149 dollars 150
i don't think it's a different price or lower on amazon but you can try it uh on there but eufy
sells it for 149 dollars and then the doorbell mount that i i got i think i did mention uh it's
$20 flat. Shipping is free. I mean, I'm sure it cost him three cents to make this. And I am happy
to pay him $20 because it fits so very well. So that's the pricing on that. I just wanted to share
with everyone. I'll say one last thing about you, Fee, and something I'm a little jealous for you
is that the one thing that's a little bit of a pain about the camera is I love the flexibility
that you can put them anywhere. But it does mean that you'll have to replace, you know, take them
down and charge the battery. And I usually do that about once every three months or so for my use.
But the way to solve that is to have a constant power source. And so what I'm jealous of you is
that I couldn't do this for my doorbell, but you can do it for your, even though it's just a trickle
power, that's going to be enough. So you can feel free to use the camera with abandon, do as many
recordings as you want. It's going to always get power, which is really, really nice. Those cameras,
the Pro S3s, they do have solar panels on top of them.
And one of the fours that I have at my house,
because of where it's positioned,
it gets enough power that I can record
to the cows come home.
It's great.
And I never have to worry about charging it.
But all of my other ones, because it's a little obscured,
the solar panel just gives a little bit extra,
but I still have to bring them down.
No, to be fair, it's totally easy to take them down.
It's just you unscrew it and then you screw it back in again
and it holds its position so you don't have to readjust it.
So it's simple.
But I just did it this past weekend.
Like my two backyard cameras were down at like 7%.
I'm like, oh, okay, I got to charge these things.
And so I took them down and I took a few hours.
You plug them in.
But in a perfect world, they would have unlimited power,
which you get by either having the solar panel in a way that the sun touches it,
or what you have here is having the door powered.
So anyway, I'm a little jealous of you.
Very impressive.
I have to say, you'd be very impressive.
Not a sponsor, by the way.
Yeah, yeah.
And they're not perfect.
They have, you know, whatever.
sometimes things don't work right but overall i'm happy with them okay we did a lot on that one i'll
just do a quick one on this but my my uh recommendation is apple has had various ways
over the years that you if you're in one location and like typically your parent or your grandparent
needs help with their device you know sometimes it's so hard to help somebody remotely it's like
they don't know how to do something and they're asking you questions and you're like right what
do you can you describe to me what you're seeing on your screen and it's tough to get through it
You just want to be able to see it.
And so Apple has had various ways over the years to do remote control.
But the best version of it yet is the version that came out in iOS 18, which came out last
fall.
And because Apple encourages you to update, my guess is your mom, your dad, your grandparents,
whoever's going to rely upon you for tech support, they are probably running iOS 18 or iPadOS
18 by now.
And if so, I'm here to tell you that when they need help, you can totally do it through remote control.
And the way that you do it is if you're talking to them on the phone, they call you up and they say, Jeff, I don't know how to do such and such.
So what you do is you can do this even while you're on a phone call.
You just use it in the phone app.
You say, turn this into a FaceTime call and you do that and then you'll see their face for a second.
And then once you're in a FaceTime call and the link that we have here that you're showing
tells you how to do it, you press this button where you on your side request permission
to control their device.
And then the one thing you're going to have to tell them on the phone is, okay, grandma,
I need you to tap this button to give me control.
But once they go through and do it, then you will see their iPhone screen on your iPhone
screen.
And at that point, you have a choice.
You know, it's the whole, do you teach a man to fish or do you fish for him?
Sometimes I will, for me, it's my dad nowadays because my mom and my, I used to help my mom
and my grandma all the time, but they passed away now.
But my dad will still call me with questions.
And sometimes I'm like, dad, I'm going to teach you how to do this.
But I tell you, Brett, most of the time I'm like, you know what?
Number one, if I teach him, he's going to forget.
I mean, my dad's very smart, but he's just not a tech person.
And number two, this particular bizarre situation he's got himself in probably is not going
to happen again.
And so I'm like, it's just easy for me to do it.
So once you have remote control, then I can say, okay, I'm going to go into the settings app.
I'm going to go four levels deep into settings.
I'm going to flip this on, blah, blah, blah.
And then they're like, hey, that solved it.
Thank you.
And you're like, exactly.
So this is, you know, this is a good reminder that the remote control feature, and again,
there's been versions of this for years and years for the Mac, but the current version of it for the iPhone,
and so many people have an iPhone, it works well.
It really does.
And so this is how you do it.
You don't have to start off on a FaceTime call.
You can start off on a regular phone call.
You switch it to FaceTime.
You request control.
They put yes.
And then when it first happens, because you're literally looking at the screen, you're going
to see your face on their screen just like they would, right?
But you can just push that off to the side of the screen so that you get your face off
of there.
And then you can see the entire screen and you can open up the app, tweak the settings,
whatever you need to do, download something from the app store, update their credit card,
Whatever it is that they need done, you can get it done.
And so that's my reminder is that remote control works really well.
I have used this for exactly the situation you described with my mother who's in Texas.
I'm traveling.
I'm in Ohio.
And she's calling.
Something is she, you know, what I find a lot of times she's like, my phone is full.
Like that's all the comment that I get.
And it's not in the phone.
It's like it's her Google photos or it's, you know, some other message that came up.
And it's like I need to see it because even if I ask her, like, well, what did the message actually say?
Right. But this I got to tell you, I use this.
And it's so because most of the time they do know how to use the phone.
Number one, they do know how to use FaceTime.
Like they're familiar with that. And so at least you can get them in a comfortable setting.
And then you can say, I'm going to get I'm going to take over right now.
And they're just like, great. You know, go go right ahead.
Apple has done this so very well, Jeff.
I'm glad that you brought this up.
But I do this pretty often for my mother.
And it's just good.
I'm just glad that Apple put this in.
I think it's really helpful.
So thanks for reporting on that.
And thanks for talking all about iOS 26, the public betas that are out now.
That's a lot.
And we'll continue to talk about that because I'm going to predict this week you will install the public beta of iPad OS.
No, no.
26 gotta happen jeff and we'll talk about that next week so we'll see you next week
thanks brett bye everybody
