Brett Burney from http://www.appsinlaw.com
Jeff Richardson from http://www.iphonejd.com
Welcome to in the news for January 9th 2025 or 2026 okay i'll start over i was gonna make a joke
out of it but yeah oh my goodness i've even written a check well i don't know if you look
if you look behind you it says 2026 above your head i know okay okay see we could maybe i'll just
leave this in. Welcome to In the News for January 9, 2026. I am Brett Burney from appsinlaw.com.
This is Jeff Richardson from iPhone JD. Hey, Brett.
It is the first full week of 2026. I'll make sure that I emphasize that 2026. And there's a huge
event going on in the technology world right now, Jeff. We are not there, but every year now,
Usually the first few weeks of January, the CES conference, Consumer Electronics Show, happens.
It is huge.
It's out in Las Vegas.
So many of our technology people that we follow are out there.
In fact, we even interviewed Steve Embry.
You know, so we stick it over.
He actually goes.
He writes for Above the Law, a website where he's covering some of the stuff and, you know, how it can be applicable even to legal professionals, for example.
I mean, this is a huge show.
I've never been.
I've always wanted to.
It sounds like it's a zoo.
But I always like the fact that you are watching some of the journalists that are attending CES, and then you get to at least link on some of the new tools or gadgets or products that might be coming out that would be relevant to us.
And first off here, you link to Cult of Mac about the new Belkin products that have been showing at CES.
Yeah, CES is an interesting conference.
As you say, the people that go tend to almost complain that it's just too big.
There's just so much there, which is why I'm sure it's interesting to see some of this stuff firsthand.
A lot of the stuff that's debuted at CES never sees the light of day.
It's more proof of concept stuff.
It's companies that are trying to – a lot of companies from the Asian markets that are just trying to get out there and see if they can catch the interest of somebody to be a distributor for something or maybe even just to work with them on something that's still in development.
So it is infamous for things to be announced at CES that never see the light of day.
So you always have to consider that.
Having said that, some of the more established vendors, and we start with Belkin, they're more likely to preview something that they're going to be coming out with in the year.
And there's a little bit more trustworthy.
I will tell you, even for the stuff that doesn't have a product or doesn't have the light of day, they're still interesting.
I mean, even before we talk about this Belkin stuff, I didn't link to this this morning in my post.
Well, Samsung, which of course does many different things, but one of the things they do is make displays.
They were debuting a display at CES that could be folded and unfolded without having a crease in it, which gets to the idea of the folding iPhone.
We'll get to that in a second because I know I think it's on our list today as well.
But in terms of actual products, yeah, it's interesting that the folks that go through this and pull out some of the gems, that's interesting because it's an idea for something that you want to buy maybe now or maybe later on in the year.
So for the Belkin one, you know, Belkin is a company that has made products that work with Apple products for a very long time.
So they have an excellent reputation.
In fact, sometimes Apple even works very close with Belkin.
You know, a perfect example is before Apple came up with their brand new strap for the Apple Vision Pro, which really I like a lot.
And we've talked about in this podcast that Belkin made a strap that everybody just said it really looked like folks at Apple wanted the strap to be on the market.
So they worked with Belkin.
You know, Apple does it with Logitech and other companies too.
They will work with the company so that, you know, the third party comes out with the product,
but the engineers at Apple really help them with it.
So back to this one.
So this goes from Belkin.
You know, as you would expect, a company like Belkin has a lot of new chargers, a lot of
Qi chargers, you know, these power banks and stuff like that.
The one thing that caught my eye here that I mentioned today was an HDMI wireless adapter.
And so here's the thing.
If you've ever given a presentation before or done one in court or, you know, anywhere
else, you know that you have to have that HDMI cord plugged into your iPad, to your computer,
to whatever. And I have had situations where just because the setup of the room is not great,
maybe it's in a hotel for presentation. It's like that HDMI cord, it's only gone so far,
which means that you're stuck there. And, you know, people, a perfect example is sometimes it's
right there at the podium and they're like, well, of course you're going to want to speak from the
podium. And I'm like, you know, I like to walk around and move. I don't necessarily want to be
at the podium. And so anyway, Belkin has this wireless solution, which looks interesting because
the idea is wherever that HTMI cord is, you plug one end in there and then you plug the other end,
the receiver, the transmitter, whichever one it is, into your, you know, whether it's your laptop
or your iPad or even your iPhone, whatever you're presenting from. And they speak with each other
wirelessly. So you could then be in the back of the room, which is the picture that you're showing
right now, the laptops at the back of the room and the screens at the front of the room. So I could
totally see if you do lots of presentations, um, for whatever reason, um, I could really see a
device like this being useful. I don't think they said when it's coming out yet or how much it costs
or no, they do. They say one 49 and Q1. So this is good when they say that something's coming out
first quarter, that means it's more likely to actually come out. Plus I trust Belkin. They're
not going to release. They're not going to announce something that's not, that's just going
to be vaporware. So, so yeah, I can't wait to try this. I mean, this looks so cool because
I remember the days that we would present wirelessly from our iPad through an Apple TV.
Now, at the very beginning, Jeff, you remember that Apple TV and the iPad had to both be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
And then at some point, Apple sort of allowed us to do an ad hoc connection to where you still had to have the Wi-Fi turned on on the iPad and the Apple TV.
But you didn't have to actually connect to the Wi-Fi network.
So you didn't have to be connected to the Internet.
And that really was fantastic because I used to give a lot of presentations that way.
And so here, what really caught my eye about this little adapter is that it works without Wi-Fi or without downloading an app or without downloading an additional driver.
Now, it's still using wireless technology.
They call it the low latency technology.
So it could be, you know, the same kind of Wi-Fi technology or even Bluetooth technology.
I don't know.
As long as it works, that's all that I really care about.
Peer to peer.
It's not going to require them to have an, which you cannot trust wherever you're presenting to have a good network.
That's the point that I'm trying to make.
And I just think that that would be so helpful because I remember the days like we have to figure out, like there would be times where at the very beginning, I didn't have access to a Wi-Fi network.
And I would end up using my iPhone hotspot, which was just not a really good way to do it.
Sometimes it would, or I would carry around one of those jetpacks or MiFis or something like that to do.
So anyway, I know there's some other products here from Belkin, but that just really caught my eye.
If this can work so seamlessly without even having to download an app or a piece of software, that's going to be fantastic.
So I guess the next one that I linked to was some of the Anchor announcements.
And, you know, Anchor also had some good ones, too.
A lot of charging devices and stuff like that.
Anchor is great.
I mean, I use Anchor for most of my cords, a lot of my batteries and stuff like that.
The one I mentioned in my post that looked interesting is actually the one that you're
showing right now is Q2.
You know, way back when Apple used to make a small little charger, you know, it came with
your iPhone, with your iPhone.
And it was only like a, what was it, a five watt charger.
So it wasn't a ton of power, but it was nice because it's so cute and small USB charger.
And so this new charger that you're showing right here, it's got the same form factor.
But one of the things it has is Anchor has started to do this on their products and some
other companies have is they're now putting screens on their power bricks.
And so even a really tiny power brick like this, I like it because it gives you, of course, right now it's being cute and it says the word hi to you just to be friendly.
But it can give you information.
Sometimes if you're troubleshooting, having information of how much power is going in and out is totally useful.
So I like that Anker's doing that in a bunch of their chargers.
The one that I mentioned in my post today was this interesting power strip.
You know, we all have the thing that like you need to have a power strip because you have so many things to plug in at your computer or whatever.
And, you know, I typically put the power strip on the floor and then you get all the cords
in it and you can't figure out what cord goes to what and dust gets down there.
And it's a, it's a, you know, aggravating this product.
And I've seen other things like this in the past, but this looks like a nice one.
It sort of clamps on the edge of your desk.
And so on the top part, like above the desk, it has things like USB, USB-C, and it actually
has two regular old outlets.
If you just want to plug something in right here on the top of your desk.
And then the other side of the clamp, which is underneath your desk, has, I think, four outlets.
And so the idea is like you don't have to worry about the core.
And then, of course, the entire device has one long cord that goes to the floor.
So there's only one cord that's going down to the floor where dust collects and stuff.
And then everything else can be plugged in more towards the top of the desk.
And if you're plugging and unplugging things, that can be a lot more convenient, it looks to me, than having to crawl under your desk, figure out, you know, what is this cord?
You know, one of the things that I do in my house, Brett, is we have one of these label makers.
I think Brother makes them that you can like print out a little sort of a label.
It prints little words on it.
And then I do that and it's a sticky thing.
And I fold it over on the end of the cord so that when I'm underneath my desk on the ground, I can see this end of the cord is for my printer.
And this one is for my monitor because otherwise you don't know what everything gets tangled.
So anyway, I thought this was a cute little idea, 70 bucks, which is, you know, pretty
consistent for these types of, you know, AC outlet power strips.
Plus it's got the USB and USB-C.
So anyway, these are, you know, I like it when people like Anker and Belk and others,
they take, you know, technology that's out there and they're like, well, if we did this
and we did this and we put it together, it would be this.
And I'm like, oh, sometimes those are pretty cool.
So that one struck my eye.
I know that the, I can't remember the name of the Anker product that you have, that big
battery that you've reviewed in the past before you still like that is it called the desktop yeah
it's called it's called something like the laptop power or something like that but it's really i love
that thing i use it all the time i was just using it yesterday actually i like that in fact i have
an anchor i don't have a small one like this first one here this nano charger but i remember i've
probably had this almost for about a year and a half or so but i got one of the big power adapters
from anchors like 120 watt it was because they were one of the first to really i thought do a
good job with the GAN technology. What is that? Gallium nitride, I believe.
So it's so much smaller, right?
It's smaller and it still can get a little warm,
but it doesn't get hot like some of the other plugs were because I,
that's the, I,
you carry just that one single anchor power adapter and I can power my phone,
my laptop and my iPad just from that alone, because it has like three,
it has two USB-C and one USB-A, but I'll do that. And I can even charge,
you know, swap it off and charge my AirPods, for example. But yeah,
I'm just excited.
Like Anchor to me is just one of the leaders in providing not just the battery technology,
because Belkin too, I feel like both of these companies are on that forefront, but also just
power solutions, right?
Just even this power strip, like you said, it looks like it's adjustable too.
So it can fit on various different table thicknesses, which is cool.
But I like that as well.
Yeah.
And then the Anchor one that you're referring to, by the way, is the Anchor Laptop Power
Bank.
And I'll just say it's so nice because it's portable.
It's got the cords built into it.
cord folds into like a handle. Yesterday, I had to be out of my office for a few hours, but I was
still getting some work done on my iPad. And I mean, I was working pretty intensely. So I was
really using power and I'm like, well, I just want to make sure I was in a situation where I knew I
wasn't going to have easy access to an outlet, but it didn't matter because I had my little anchor
laptop power bank with me and I just plugged in the iPad. I had all the power I needed. It's a
really useful device for being out and about. It's also just useful if you're at your house and you
just want to sit at a table and you don't have, you know, you don't want to be running. You don't
With the cord, right.
It's going to trip over and stuff.
So anyway.
You mentioned the Qi wireless technology, 12 South, a company, a very small company that
we have always just enjoyed so much.
I like this little valet is the product that they have where you can throw down your car
keys, maybe your glasses, but then they have a little Qi charger on the side.
It looks like here too.
Very cute.
Yeah.
12 South is one that I sort of first got to know them years ago because they came out
with a product called AirFly,
which is sort of the definitive one
that if you're on an airplane
and you want to like watch what's on the screen
of the thing in front of you,
but you want to use your Bluetooth headphones,
you plug this tiny little AirFly device
into the place that you plug in headphones
and then you create this wireless,
this is similar to what we talked about before,
you're creating this little wireless network
so that you can hook up Bluetooth to it.
So there you go.
And they have come out with so many different versions
of the AirFly over the year.
But 12South, they come out with just a couple interesting,
You know, they don't make a lot of stuff.
Right, right.
But the stuff that they do make, it tends to be very well thought out of.
They're good design folks.
And so this one, I mean, they recognize the fact that a lot of people, you know, you come
into your house, whether it's like an entry table or maybe it's in your bedroom, you just
want to, you know, put your keys down, put your phone down, put your stuff down.
So it's nice to have like a little tray just so everything's nice and neat.
And then they say, why not put in that tray a little Qi charging so that you could stick
your phone on it and your phone is recharging while it's on it.
um and i think that that makes a lot of sense you know i have absolutely i don't currently use
a case for my iphone but every once in a while i have bought one over the years and a few years
ago i bought one of apple's um what is it what was that mesh the the the one that they had that
people didn't really like it was like the linen whatever it was but it was the apple version of
the case when they got rid of when they got rid of the uh of the leather ones and so i had a case
for like it was maybe my two year ago iphone but my point is just that it's like a little case and
I know this makes no sense, but it just sits on my nightstand because it's a little case.
And like, if I want to take my glasses off and fold them up and put them somewhere, I
just put them in that case.
It basically is working like a little tray like this because it's got little curved up
edges on it and stuff like that.
And so it makes no sense.
I should use something that's more purpose-filled, but I just understand that having a little
tray with some edges on it, and that's where you put the glasses.
That's where you put your wallet.
That's where you put your keys, whatever.
Totally makes sense.
So why not have one of those that can also charge at the same time?
I think for some people in some setups, like they're going to be, Hey, this is the device
I'd been waiting for.
And I didn't even know that I wanted it.
So this is, that's a perfect 12 self device.
It's like, this is clever.
If you need this, you know, if you're going to be on the airplane and you want to use
Bluetooth, if you want a little tray, you know, now you've got the valet.
So very cool.
I feel like I'm getting a little spoiled with as many Chi chargers that I have around the
house for exactly what you're saying, Jeff.
Like I'm going to set my iPhone down anyway, but if I'm going to set it down, I might as well make sure that it's getting charged.
Well, that's what I like that anchor cube that you and I have the three in one.
I've got it. I've got a Qi charger downstairs.
Like I want it to be in hotels now.
Like I don't want to have to plug in with a cord.
I just want to set the iPhone down and just know that it's getting at least a trickle charge of some kind, you know, while it's sitting there.
And so anyway, that's that's pretty cute.
Fine woven.
That was the name that Apple came up.
Fine woven case.
When they discontinued the leather, they came out with the fine woven case.
So fine that I don't know if they even make them anymore.
I think people were just people were not happy with that.
Well, I remember the day when Apple actually did have a presence at CES, right?
That was many years ago.
But they I don't think that they've been at CES for a long time.
You don't think so?
Yeah, I don't think that they ever have.
I mean, for a long time, Macworld was the weekend after.
Macworld, that's right.
And so that was always the thing is you could technically go to both, but you couldn't go
to all of both.
And so the idea, you know, there were many years, for example, the biggest one was when
the iPhone was introduced in the year 2007.
Everybody's eyes were on Macworld.
And like, even though, you know, the rumors that the people at the CES convention weren't
talking about the 10 million products in Las Vegas, they were all talking about what Apple
was doing.
So Apple people have been at CES in the past, like behind the scenes.
But I don't think that Apple has ever been like a major presenter there.
But most of the many other companies do.
So if we still had some of those Macworld conferences, maybe this would have been the time we would have heard about the folding iPhone.
You and I have talked about this quite a bit.
It's a big rumor that we fully expect maybe this year, maybe not, maybe next year.
But I really enjoyed this article from Jason Stel at Six Colors Today to where maybe we don't think about an iPhone that can fold, but maybe we think about a foldable device that will fold into an iPad.
Like maybe we're thinking about it in a different way.
He says, will the iPhone fold be a phone that you open or an iPad that you close?
And I just thought this was a great take.
Last week, you and I talked about some of the things that Apple might come out with this year.
And we talked about the iPhone fold.
And one of the things I had in the back of my mind last week, but I don't think I mentioned
on the podcast, was that there is this rumor, and it's just a rumor, so who knows if it's
true, but somebody claims, oh, I know what the dimensions are going to be.
And so he created a file that you could use with a 3D printer to print out something that
would be the same size of this rumored iPhone Fold.
And I've been thinking about it because my son actually has a 3D printer, and I was thinking,
you know, do I want to waste some of his filament just to see what it would feel like in my
hand?
To get a mock-up?
And so, but anyway, that's what Jason did here is he found that mock-up and he printed it out.
Okay.
The point of Jason Snow's article is, and again, who knows if it's correct or not.
But what's interesting about this shape is if you look at it, if you're looking at the video right now, you can see it's not the height of an iPhone.
It's shorter.
It's almost like the size of like a little field notes notebook or something like that.
And you're like, well, why would you have a device that is different dimensions from the iPhone?
And the reason is because if you have a device of this dimension, when you open it up, it's then going to be in the aspect ratio of a 3-4 screen, which, you know, 3x4, which is the aspect ratio basically of the iPad since day one.
You know, it's changed a little bit one way or the other, but it's a very familiar shape.
And so what Jason's point was is if Apple is going to make a device that folds, you can go two ways with it.
The way that the current Android, most of the Android folks are doing that make these is they make something that looks basically like a smartphone.
And then when you open it, it's almost a square.
So the dimensions look proper for a phone, but it's just a little, you know, and the square shape could be useful if you're doing something like Instagram because that's sort of the natural shape of, you know, Instagram posts.
But for using like multiple applications like an iPad, it's maybe not enough space.
Whereas if the Apple went this way, it would mean that it's perfect dimensions when it's unfolded.
And then when it's folded up, it's something different.
And so what Jason is saying is Apple is probably thinking, what's the more useful mode of this folding device?
Is the more useful mode when it's closed or when it's open?
And what his pitch is, and it makes a lot of logic, is like the real pitch of this device is that you can do so much more of it when it's open.
but you want it to close so that you can stick it in your pocket. Whereas an iPad,
you can't really stick an iPad in your pocket. Even an iPad mini, you'd have to have a, you know,
like a cargo size pocket. But you're certainly not going to put it in your shirt pocket. Right.
And so his thought was the iPad is works so well. And it's so useful that he thinks what people
would really want is an iPad that can get smaller, not an iPhone that can get bigger. And so if you
start from there, it makes more sense to have an iPad that could get smaller than this aspect ratio
that is rumored to be the one that's, you know, who knows if it's correct or not. He goes,
it actually, it does make sense. Now, it's not that when it's folded up, it will probably still
have a screen on it. So you can still interact with it. Just like you would interact with your
iPhone. It would be sort of just a short and stout iPad of phone. It reminds me way back when Apple
used to make the iPods, they had all sorts of different shapes and sizes, but one of the
generation of iPods was really sort of short and stout with a little screen at the top.
And so that shape can work. This would be probably a little bigger than that,
but the same dimensions.
And I think Jason has a good point here.
So it'll be, you know, again,
this is if Apple does come out
with this device this year,
it's going to be so fascinating
to see how they make the pitch for it,
what use cases they say really work for it.
But looking at this,
it just makes me think
that I think he may be onto something,
that this might be the shape
that would make more sense.
So just really interesting.
I think what I got most excited
about looking at this
is that Apple truly has an opportunity
to maybe reinvent the shape, the general shape of what we consider to be a mobile phone, right?
We've gone through some of these generations before with what we used to call the candy bar
phone and we called the flip phone, right? The old Motorola. And we have been living with the same
iPhone shape for so many years now, almost 20 years at this point, that when we say phone,
like immediately we think of that shape just it's the same as you and I when we say the word document
we think of an eight and a half by 11 sheet of paper and I just get excited about the fact that
maybe Apple is doing something a little bit different and I'll tell you as an example
I had a colleague that had a Galaxy Z Flip 7 a Samsung phone very interesting shape yeah but
this was interesting because when you it's closed up you can see right here on the screen that I'm
showing it literally is like a square let me see if they've got a little bit of different uh yeah
here's a little video standard iphone size that folds from top to bottom correct so you end up
with this tiny little square that fits in your pocket but there's still a screen on it and that's
what caught my eye because i you know i don't usually have this on my radar as something to
be looking at but it was this little square that could easily fit in his shirt pocket in his pants
pocket but it still had a screen on there to show the time to show some updates now i don't know if
this, if this Z flip does this, but I remember then you could unfold it. So it looks like the
typical shape of what we would consider to be a phone today. And then at least the model that he
had, maybe this one, isn't the one he could unfold it. And then he could additionally unfold it to be
more like a square, similar to what we were just talking about. It wouldn't be like the size of an
iPad, but so you could, it was almost like he had two unfoldings of this phone that he, that he could
do on this. And you've seen some of these probably in the wild and others have as well. Again, I don't
know if this particular model does what I'm talking about here. I don't think it does. But the fact
that you could actually have three different ways you could use it as a little square, open it up as
like a regular long phone. And then if you have another screen, you could even open that up to be
maybe like this four by three kind of an angle. Obviously, no one knows. I'm just saying from a
speculation, just reading through Jason's article here just really got me to expand my excitement
and like, oh, wait a minute.
You know, we are thinking about this
as a phone that you can open,
but what if it's an iPad
or just even a different kind of an idea
of what it could do?
Because I feel like Apple could be one of the companies
that could really push the boundaries
a little bit more than others.
It'll be interesting.
Another report, if you have an iPad or a Mac
that you haven't upgraded to 26.2,
so that'd be iPadOS 26.2 or MacOS 26.2.
I did both of these updates this morning because this story from 9 to 5 Mac by Chance Miller, interesting to me, it could unlock a little bit of faster Wi-Fi on these devices.
And I'm like, I don't know if I'm going to see this or not because some of it will depend on even your router, you know, in your own network, wherever you're working.
But I'm like, hey, if it can't hurt, I'm definitely going to upgrade.
And so I did that this morning.
26.2 came out about a month ago in like mid-December, maybe three weeks ago.
And so, you know, if you haven't updated yet, you might as well go ahead and do it.
It's got security updates and everything else.
But it's always interesting when a software update basically gives you a new hardware feature.
You're like, oh, that's interesting.
And that's what it is here.
Now, again, you have to take advantage of Wi-Fi 6E.
You have to have a router that supports Wi-Fi 6E.
So it would be one of the newest routers.
So you may not have this in your home.
You may or may not have it in your business.
But the bottom line is at some point, you're going to start to come into them.
And then over time, they'll become more and more prevalent.
So it makes perfect sense that Apple would want to update its technology.
And so I'll be curious, at this speed where you're going from, it says what you go from
80 megahertz to 160 megahertz is the background.
I don't know how that all translates out.
And it might be that where you're going to really, you know, this might may, the post
says that it's going to help for uploads and downloads to the internet.
And that might be true.
This might be most useful if you have two devices that are on the same wireless network
and you're doing just a peer-to-peer transfer of files.
But again, that's something that people do all the time.
You know, you're sending a file from a server to a laptop or from an iPad to something else.
And you certainly, it's nicer if that's even faster.
So it makes perfect sense that Apple would add this.
But I particularly like the fact that something that I think of, I think of this as a hardware
feature.
What kind of Wi-Fi do you support?
But it's actually the software, just the regular software update that unlocks this.
So it's always fun when you have something and it gets even better without you having
to buy anything new.
So again, this is not for an iPhone, although I assume that there's some improvements could be made on there, right?
Is it not on iPhone?
At least Chance Miller just talks about iPad and Mac OS here.
I don't know that he mentioned that it was on an iPhone.
Yeah.
Good point.
Good point.
And so I don't know if the improvements have already been baked into the updates for iOS 26.2.
But again, just on the – because, I mean, the iPhone, I've got almost to the point, Jeff, where I just do an automatic update, right?
I don't even really think about it that much.
But I got to tell you, sometimes specifically on the Mac, I have to make sure that I manually allow it to update or I'm aware of it.
Like it doesn't it doesn't seem like it automatically does it.
I mean, I know I've got the automatic updates on there, but when I checked this warning, it had not automatically updated.
So I went ahead and pushed it for my Mac and my iPad.
Anyway, just good updates on that.
You and I have also been big fans of the Apple credit card, which we don't talk just a whole
lot about.
This has been out at least for maybe five or six years.
I want to say it came out in 2019.
The Apple credit card, which is weird.
I remember when it first came out, people talking about this is like, Apple, you're a
technology company.
What in the world are you doing, you know, dabbling into the finance side?
But I love the Apple credit card, Jeff.
The things that grabbed me initially was just the tools that the card has to make sure that you're paying your balances on time.
It gives you all of the information that sometimes I find in other places.
Some of the information is just obscure.
Like if you go to Chase or some other places, it's hard to find your current balance, how much to balance.
And I just love there's a circle that tells you how much you can pay and then how much interest you'll be paying if you don't pay it off by that time.
like a lot of really transparent information.
And I've always appreciated that.
But then bonus, anytime that I buy something from Apple,
I'm using the Apple credit card
because across the board, it gives you like a 3% back.
I remember initially that was just
that it would go into your Apple cash account,
but now you can even put it into a savings account.
I think you did that,
or at least you were talking about that at one time,
which is really cool.
Well, this launched in 2019, I think, with Goldman Sachs.
That was the bank that Apple partnered with.
And we've seen some stories over the last couple of years or so that Golden
Sachs is not too happy about it.
Apparently they're losing money,
maybe because there's too much transparent information on the card that they
don't like that people are paying all of their balances on time every month,
that kind of a thing.
So this we expected, but it has been confirmed.
Now Apple is going to partner with Chase.
So JP Morgan Chase, everybody knows him.
They have a lot of other different credit cards on here as well.
The contract apparently has been signed, but it's going to take probably another two years before we actually see the transition here.
Yeah. Goldman Sachs is obviously a huge financial institution, but they were not in the consumer credit card business until Apple decided to partner with them or they're the ones that accepted the offer.
And, you know, apparently they thought, oh, this might be the next big thing for us.
And for whatever reason, they decided it wasn't for them.
Chase, as you said, Brett, I mean, they definitely know this space.
You know, they very much know the consumer credit card space.
They are old pros.
And so I'm sure they were easy.
You know, it was very easy for them to evaluate whether this made sense for them.
And they decided to go for it.
As you said, I love my Apple credit card.
I mean, I I'm an Amex person because I we fly Delta a lot.
So I have a Delta Amex card.
So if I can use American Express, I do.
But many places you can't or it's more expensive to do so.
And so my secondary default credit card is is this Apple card, which uses the MasterCard
network.
So it's available just about everywhere.
And, and then I, you know, even if I could use Amex, as you said, if I have an opportunity
to purchase from a vendor where I get 3% back and those vendors include, of course, Apple.
So every Apple product I purchase, I put in the Apple credit card and some other places
to like, you know, if I get gas at Exxon or go to Walgreens or there's some other places
that you can get 3%.
I always take advantage of it.
And that 3% adds up over time.
Just last fall, when I bought my current iPhone, the iPhone 17 pro, because of the 3% that
over, I don't even know what period of time it was. And again, mine no longer goes into the Apple
cash. It goes to the Apple savings portion of the Apple card, which means you get a little bit of,
I mean, it's not much interest, but you might as well get some interest. I pulled out, I just
looked at it on my phone. I pulled out the last October, $650 that went towards my new iPhone.
And so between the trade-in that I got from giving my last year's iPhone, plus the money from that,
I think it pretty much paid for my brand new iPhone, which is nice. So nothing like a free
iPhone. And so that was great. And even though I wiped it out pretty much last year to do it,
as I look at my personal one, I currently have $176 in there. So I mean, it'll be long before
on my way to get another Apple product that I can get for free, which is what I tend to, I mean,
for me personally, I tend to save them for Apple products because it's more fun. But even aside
from the 3%, as you said, the Apple card is a nice, it's a nicely designed credit card. You
need to pay it on the first. I think you can pick when you pay it, but I pay it in the first of the
month, which just makes sense. It's the beginning. It's very, it's very easy. The wallet app integration
is great. Like it, it works, it works really well. My only criticism of it is that I don't believe
that they have, I use Quicken, um, for my just personal finance, you know, just to keep track
of my checking accounts and stuff like that. And I don't believe that they have an integration into
Quicken. Um, it's, you know, for my Amex stuff, I can automatically have it come into Quicken
for this thing. I think I actually manually put it in there. And again, I don't use it a ton. I
probably only, you know, do 15, 20 transactions a month. And so it's not a huge deal for me to just
put them in manually in Quicken because it's so easy just to see them all in the wallet app and
put them in. Sure. Sure. But other than that, I really like the credit card. Yeah. There is no
direct integration, but I will say this. I do know that you can go into the app and everything
has to be done on the phone really, which some people don't like, right? There's not really a
good web interface. I don't know if there's even a web interface at all. We have to do everything
on the phone but you have to dig for this but i do have found that there was not a direct
integration but you can download like your monthly statement as a as a qbf yeah qbf or whatever it
is you can do with that format too i didn't realize yeah yeah you can download so then you
can import that of course if you wanted to do that but or just a csv is what people do as well
the big headline here is that a the apple card's great and b it ain't going to change because even
Even though behind the scenes, it's going to go from Chase to Goldman Sachs, the page on Apple's website that I linked to and that's discussed here, everything that to the consumer really matters, it looks like it's not going to change.
Now, I'm not saying that there's not going to be some little thing around the edges that might be a little different when it's Chase instead of Goldman Sachs.
Sure.
But there's not going to be a fee associated with it.
You're going to still get the 3% back.
You're going to still have savings account.
Things are going to move over.
Even this one surprised me.
They said that I don't use my physical Apple card very much.
although it is a very nice card with that thick-tack name.
But they say that the same physical card will continue to work,
so I guess that means the number will be the same.
So, you know, I suspect that when this transition happens about two years from now,
people are not going to even know.
And this is the big one for me because it's been about a year.
There have been rumors out there in the Wall Street Journal and otherwise
that Goldman Sachs just wasn't happy with being in this business
and they wanted to pull out.
Not that they necessarily had a problem with Apple.
They just didn't want to be in the consumer credit card business.
And I was like, gosh, if they pull out, am I going to lose my Apple card?
And the good news is no.
Chase is going to take it over.
Everything is going to basically be the same.
And so that's great news.
Can I also say I attribute this card as really, at least for me personally, and I really think
on a bigger scale, it opened up the idea of paying electronically with the phone.
When I got it, I don't think I've ever used a physical card, which again, as you say,
it's a beautiful card.
It came in this nice little envelope and stuff.
titanium and it was like one of the big metal. I mean, you can cut people. I remember we had a
video where somebody was cutting a cucumber with it, right? I think or something like that,
but I never used the physical card. This was one of the first cards that I really started using the
Apple wallet for. And now I probably have 12 cards in my Apple wallet at least, Jeff, along with
other things, you know, my frequent flyer numbers and everything like that too. But at least for me,
this is the card that opened up that idea of Apple wallet to the point now where five years later,
I'm annoyed if I can't use my Apple wallet to pay for something, you know, if I'm at a store.
I mean, I remember, you know, Home Depot was a long holdout for Apple Pay, right?
And I couldn't use it.
And I tried to tap it into the cashier always would be like, sorry, we don't have to have to pay.
And I'm like, are you kidding me?
How can you not have Apple Pay?
Like I would get unceremoniously angry about that.
But it's like now I expect it.
And to me, at least the Apple credit card, this was the one that really it showed me what it can do.
And, you know, anyway, just and by the way, there's no annual fee for it either.
Right. No transaction fees.
I mean, Apple really did something big and I'm sure they had to have several talks behind doors with Chase to keep a lot of those benefits and features that we like so much.
But anyway, it'll be interesting to keep watching that on there, too.
Talking about Apple from maybe the business standpoint, we have talked several times about the future of Apple in regards to its leader, the CEO.
Tim Cook has taken over now for quite a number of years, continues to do an amazing job, but it's like it can't last forever.
And so who is in the running to take over?
We've said several names, but to me, I still like the idea of John Ternus.
who has been there for a very long time.
And I liked this New York Times little profile of John Ternus.
It wasn't very long.
I kind of wanted it to be a little bit longer.
But I liked the fact that I just could pick out
some really interesting little tidbits of like,
yeah, I think that could be the person.
That could be the person that could lead Apple
in the next couple of decades.
The thing that was fun about this story is,
again, we all know the rumor that John Ternus
will be the next CEO whenever Tim Cook wants to step down,
which could be this year.
but the reporters of it, Trip Mikkel and Kaylee Hung,
they did a good job finding some stories
that I had not seen reported yet.
And I will say Trip Mikkel,
he does a lot of the Apple stories for the New York Times
and I don't always agree with his viewpoint
but he does have good sources.
My problem with some of his reporting
is sometimes those sources only tell part of the story
and that's how he reports it.
I mean, I guess that's inherent in any reporting
but he does have some good stories about Apple too
and I think this is definitely one of the good ones
because they found some stories that I had never heard before.
And again, who knows how relevant that they are.
But he has the example of there was a time when John Ternus was coming of age, as it were,
in the hardware division of Apple.
And he moved from just being one of the workers up to being a supervisor
and had an option to sort of move into like the corner office type thing.
And he's like, no, I'd actually prefer to sort of be out here with everybody else.
I caught that story too.
And it's consistent with the personality of John Ternus seems to be,
I've never met the man myself, of course,
But it seems like he's well-liked.
He wants to be part of the team, work with people, and he's incredibly well-respected.
And I think that that's so important because if you're going to have a transition, I mean,
Apple in the 90s had a tumultuous set of leaders.
But since Steve Jobs came back, people respected Steve Jobs.
Hate him or love him, you definitely respected him.
People respect Tim Cooks because how can you not?
The company has grown so much under his leadership.
And so I get the sense that if John Ternus takes over, the people at Apple will respect
him because of his tenure with the company, because of the way he works with them and stuff like that.
Really nice. I'll mention one other tiny thing. You know, and we have this as a story coming up,
you know, I totally love my Apple Vision Pro. Even though it's not, you know, not a big product,
but I love the future of that product. And I learned for the first time in this article that
back in the 90s, before he worked at Apple, he worked at like a startup or something. I don't
think they named the company that was involved with virtual reality headsets. I'm like, okay,
So this guy's been thinking about virtual reality since the 90s.
And so he will have a vision for that.
Everybody, when they come into being the leader of a company, you're going to always have a particular bent that you bring into it, right?
Steve Jobs had his personality of simplicity and he could really understand what made people's tick.
Tim Cook, his background was being the CEO of making sure that things were efficient.
You weren't losing money on things and logistics.
And of course, Apple is incredibly well run company in many ways from a financial standpoint.
As a result, John Ternus will come from the hardware side.
And so you would assume that he would be, you know, hopefully he'll, you know, understand
the software stuff as well, because everyone does at Apple.
But, you know, one of the things that Apple is, I mean, how many times have you and I said,
Brett, that the hardware of the X, you know, the iPad, the iPhone, whatever, it's fantastic.
And it's the software that's catching up.
I love my iPad Pro so much, but it was not until just a few months ago in iPad OS 26
that with the multitasking, I felt like the software started to catch up with what an amazing
hardware device it is.
And so the hardware is some of the best parts of Apple, and this is what he comes from.
So it gives me confidence that Apple will continue on that course of great hardware and
then hopefully also have the software that can live up to the promise.
So anyway, some new behind-the-scenes stories here.
If you have an interest in this, the link that I have in my post today is one of those New York Times gift articles.
So even if you don't subscribe, you can read it.
I think it's easy.
It's a good read.
It comes good stuff in it.
Ternus is the youngest of the top executives at Apple right now.
He is 50 right now.
But that's how old Tim Cook was.
Exactly.
That's what the story says.
And Tim Cook is 65 now.
Is that right?
Or is he more than that?
Right around there.
Yeah.
But it says exactly what you just said.
turnus is 50 right now the same age that cook was when he took over for steve jobs in 2011 i don't
know that that means much of anything with the age but i mean there are other executives and other
names we've talked about this in the past that are in the running potentially you know from the
outside looking in that could run the company but they're all a little bit older so then it's like
okay well we can maybe get one of these older executives but then in 10 years or 15 years we're
looking for somebody else uh at the time and and then lastly i'll just say one brad real quick on
Craig Federici, who I've always been impressed with.
I love Craig at presentations.
The rumors have been that for the last 10 years, if Tim Cook was ever hit by a bus and they had to put somebody in there immediately, it would probably be Craig Federici.
But like you say, because they're so close in age, that if Tim Cook retires this year or next year, it may not make sense for Craig to be the one to take over somebody that's a little bit younger.
I think there's a value to having somebody good, which is the most important.
But I think there's a value in having someone there for an extended period of time.
Right.
So and John Ternus could be that person.
I just put so much.
I'm such a visual guy.
And when I see Ternus do an interview or when he's on one of those Apple videos, I just
have a sense from him.
Like there's the confidence there.
I feel like I can relate to what he's saying a little bit about I mean, nothing against
anybody else.
I mean, I love watching Craig Federighi, but he's just over the top a lot of times with
Air Force One.
But Ternus to me just I don't know.
He just embodies so much of where I kind of want to see Apple.
That's just me personally, but it'll be interesting to see how that goes.
You mentioned the Vision Pro, and maybe Ternus will be the one to continue to push that forward.
And I like this little story from Computer World that Johnny Evans, who I think he was the Macalope.
He has a Appleholic.
That's what that's Appleholic, a computer world.
I've been reading him for a long, long time.
Anyway, he's talking about the Vision Pro, the lull before the spatial storm.
He talks about it from a commercial side, but then you also put in your post today how
from the consumer side, specifically with basketball, NBA, the Vision Pro continues to
be out there, even though there may or may not be a lot of people that have it, but it
continues to continue to make headlines.
Yeah.
So a couple of related stories here.
You know, the biggest, of course, is that we all know that the Vision Pro, as cool as
it is, and even though Apple did recently come out with the second generation to make the
processor faster. It's basically the same as the one from the day one. The big story is that this
is Apple putting a stake in the ground because in the future, five, 10 years from now, I think there's
a real future to this spatial technology. I think Tim Cook thinks so. I think John Turnus thinks so
too, perhaps, based on what we just said. And so that's what's most interesting to me is that Apple
is there now so that when it becomes a big deal in the future, they will be there. They were there
in the beginnings of GUI computers with the original Macintosh in 1984, and that developed
over the decades. And, you know, we had smartphones before the iPhone, but when the iPhone came around
in 2007, it changed everything. And yet that first model, so few people used it because of its
limitations and its newness, but over time it became, you know, so this is what I think the
future of the vision series, whether it's the vision pro the vision, non-pro, whatever it is,
is so interesting parts of this article. First of all, he mentions that the current generation
is particularly useful for a lot of enterprise for big businesses, which is the focus of the
Computer World Magazine, of course. And, you know, everything from medical, we've talked about these
stories before, you know, a doctor doesn't have to worry about physical displays, they could, you
know, see the real world as they're doing an operation, and they can see virtual displays at
the same time, you know, a lot of industries where if you can, you know, be looking at something in
the real world, and also have augmented reality information around you, it can make you much more
efficient for your job. You know, as an attorney, you know, I don't use it all the time. But I often
And when I do, I love being able to make it work well.
You have to hook up to a computer, but like I can have this huge monitor way bigger than
I've ever had before that I can have in Microsoft Word and my Westlaw and my, you know, documents
and everything everywhere.
And it can be really useful to be working in this environment.
It reminds me of the old Minority Report movie from way back when.
Love it.
That is the present, but that's for business.
And as he says that a lot of businesses purchase like a hundred of these things and use them
and stuff for that very reason.
But, you know, he thinks and he quotes, I think it's Ming-Chi Kuo or one of the analysts that say that Apple believes that the real future is going to be more consumer adoption.
And of course, to do that, they got to get the price lower and stuff like that.
And so that's just sort of a real natural, you know, juxtaposition to the other story that's in the news this week, which people love live events so much, especially live sports.
You know, people pay big bucks to get a great, you know, seat right next to the basketball
court to watch their favorite team.
I don't know how much you pay for those, a thousand bucks, something like that.
And the promise of something like the Vision Pro is when you are in the immersive mode,
you feel like you are there.
You really do feel like you were there.
It's so wonderful.
And so what they've done for the Lakers is they've got a number of games.
And the first one is tonight that they have set up, I believe it's six or seven cameras.
And it's going to be like a sideline camera, one that's right behind the hoops and, you know, on both sides, of course, and some other good ones.
And so and they're going to have a dedicated engineer, whatever you call these people that switch between the different cameras so that they're going to put together a live presentation that you will feel like you are not even just in the best seats of the game, better than the best seats.
Because the best seat for the game when they're on one side of the court is not the same as the best seat when the players are on the other side of the court.
But because they can switch the camera angles, you're going to be there.
So we'll see.
But my sense is that this could be really, really good.
And I'm not a huge basketball fan, although I love watching my daughter play and her team.
But I'm not a big NBA player.
But I'm definitely interested in watching this.
Now, I can't watch it live tonight because Spectrum owns the rights to the Lakers games.
And so you have to be within the spectrum market, which is Los Angeles and Hawaii and areas of Las Vegas and stuff.
But the good news is that this weekend they're going to have a replay of it.
I don't think I've seen an announcement whether it's free or not.
You have to have the NBA app.
You have to have a free ID on it, so you need to sign up for it, which is free.
My sense is you won't have to pay for it.
But even if you do have to pay for it, I'll want to pay for it to check it out.
because I do think that this could be the future.
You know, I love watching Saints football
as bad as the team may be right now.
Or you pick your sports.
If, you know, there's something, don't get me wrong.
There's something to being there in the stadium
where you're with all the fans.
I mean, we all know that that's a unique experience.
But if you can't do that,
the next best thing could be something like this.
And especially if the future, you know,
we've talked about how with the Vision Pro,
it has technology that you can have you and a friend can watch a movie at the same time and
you can turn and see each other and you can turn and see the movie. I, you know, that this, this
version is just for one person, but I could see a future version where, you know, you could get
together with friends and your virtual devices and you feel like you've got the best seats in the
house. So I feel like this, this is the start of something big. I really do think. And basketball
is a perfect first sport to do it because the court's a little bit more of an intimate size,
as opposed to something really big
like a soccer or football field,
but you got to start somewhere.
And as I noted in my post today,
it's not just sports.
You know, if you could have,
I have watched in the past,
you know, Broadway performances
that have been videotaped
or filmed, whatever.
You know, a perfect example
was during the pandemic
when Disney Plus had Hamilton
that so many of us watched.
And, you know, if you have a really big TV,
watching the original cast of Hamilton
do the Broadway production
was pretty cool.
Not as good as being there in the theater,
But if I had had the choice to watch that in like a spatial view where I'm like in the front row or and I can look around, that would be even better.
And I could see a future of that or other live concerts and stuff like that.
We already have that now.
There are certain apps on the Vision Pro that have live concerts that have been recorded that are fantastic.
Apple released one the other day.
I think you saw it maybe the last time that you and I were together in person.
Didn't you look at the Metallica one?
I did.
Yeah.
We're like, it's the best seat.
And that's a good example because the Metallica one had different cameras in different locations.
much like this basketball game will.
And so that's why it's like,
it's almost better than the best seats in the house
because you can go to where, you know,
whatever angle is best.
If you want to be sitting right next to the drummer,
you're doing that.
If you want to be sitting in front of the lead singer.
And so I think there's a future here.
I love that Apple's a part of it.
And I just think that if they continue to do this stuff,
you know, in a couple of years,
when more people have the devices
and Apple has figured all this technology out,
it's going to be really, really exciting.
I also think that there's a future for this
and many other things too.
There's a future in law, I think.
In fact, I'll be doing presentations on that soon.
We'll be talking about that coming up.
But yeah, this is just something exciting.
So here we go this weekend.
Very excited to be at the start.
I'm excited to hear you watching the game.
Like that would be fun to see your impressions of it.
And you'll get a courtside seat
without having a sweaty basketball player trip over you
or get beer spilled on you or something.
That's great.
Last week, we teased an announcement from Apple about their Fitness Plus service.
I remember all of the trainers had like newspapers out.
It was kind of weird looking to me.
But we now know what they were teasing.
And it's not that great, I got to say.
But it's the season, right?
What is it?
The second Friday of the new year is when the quitting day or something like that.
Did they mention that here in the press release?
But their theme, Apple's theme has been quit quitting.
You don't need to quit.
Like the Fitness Plus app can help you go, which I have to say, I agree with that.
Like that's what motivates me is like, I don't want to think about it.
If I know that I can just pull up one of the fitness trainers that I know and respect and
admire, like they're going to get me through it and they're going to talk me through it.
And, you know, I ended up doing a 20 minute workout and it's great.
Not a whole lot in this press release, I don't think, but I'm glad to see they're continuing
to improve it.
Two things that they're trying to do differently, which I think makes sense, or they're related
is the Fitness Plus program is great.
The individual programs are really good.
The trainers that they have are dynamic
and I really enjoy them.
They're charismatic and they do a good job
and getting you, you know,
pushing yourself harder than you would have.
But each of them is sort of individual.
You know, you pick one for the treadmill
or for running or for weightlifting or for yoga
and you watch that program.
So one thing that they haven't had in the past
is sort of a programs that, you know,
everyone is standalone.
You know, they've never had like a program that goes over time.
And this is something that they're doing now.
And so they've got a fitness comeback program that's going to take a couple different programs
like strength and HIIT training and stuff like that.
And they're going to put it together.
The idea being that like you would do this one, this 10 minute one directly followed by
another 10 minute one is part of an overall full body training.
Okay.
Another thing they're doing is they have one called Build a Yoga Habit.
And it's a four week program.
And the idea is that just sort of like an intro, or if you've been doing yoga for a while, a refresher to sort of like over a period of four weeks, get more into it.
And I have to admit, I've never really done yoga.
I've tried it a ton of time, but like this would be good for me because I could sort of have, you know, the program doesn't assume I have prior knowledge.
Right.
So you're going to start just slow.
And the one that I'm definitely going to do is they have one also for strength training that starts on Monday.
So a few days from now.
And it's three or four weeks.
I forget how many weeks it is, but it's three times a week.
I don't know that you have to do it on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, if you do the second one
on Thursday instead of Wednesday.
I think it's fine.
But the idea is it's sort of a getting as it's built.
And I hope that this is what it actually is.
It's going to be my strength training program that I'm going to do with my dumbbells and
stuff.
But I hope that there's going to also be like a little bit of teaching in there, like whether
you're a true beginner or someone who's been doing it for a little bit like I have.
But I would love for someone to remind me of the basics of, you know, here's what this
muscle group is and here's why we're doing this and here's the advantages of this um so that that's
what's new apple has not before had that in its fitness plus program i know that competitors um
programs have offered that type of feature where you have multiple sessions and you have four you
know beaners and again perfect time january when people have started their great habits and then
sometimes are waiting and moving off it this is a great way to get you in it so i think it's an
exciting announcement. Now, what you and I talked about a week ago is what we really want is for
Apple to be integrating some sort of, whether it's artificial intelligence or something to be,
you know, things that are more personalized for you. You know, maybe we'll one day,
there was a headline this week that ChatGPT is now offering something that can
import your health data into ChatGPT Health and provide you some, you know, we're not going to
call it medical advice, but it's basically medical advice about your medical conditions.
You know, I do think that there is a future for that.
I would love to use Apple as opposed to ChatGPT, who I may not trust as much with the privacy
implications to do that.
But hopefully that's still coming in the future.
But so again, these announcements were not, I had hoped for something revolutionary.
Yeah, a little bit more.
But what they did announce could be useful.
I mean, I'll report next week on how useful the strength training one is.
I don't use the Strava app, but they announced that they have a challenge now in conjunction
with Strava.
um i feel like that that's another similar type of an app i think but anyway you can log things
into the apple watch into the apple health as well so that's that's nice i guess if you are a
strava user that's another one that they announced as well last video that you put at the bottom of
your post i i thought this was this was fun um a little long probably there is a youtube personality
uh i show speed probably many of you know i feel like he's been popping up in more and more of my
uh feeds but uh it's a cute video to me what i mostly enjoyed was like remembering back in the
old 70s and 80s like old kung fu movies you know to where they were overdubbed and just the voices
and everything they really did a great job of nailing some of that and so the story is pretty
funny this is a the video is called the master of speed and stability and it's so helped uh just
so sponsored by Beats, Beats Pro, which is Apple, of course. But I just thought it was really cool.
It's worth watching. It's a little fun. Yeah. The reminder, you know, the shtick of it all
is that Beats Pro do a great job of staying on your head because they go around your ears.
So even if you were shaking around and doing Kung Fu moves, they're not going to come off.
Kung Fu, right. And as I mentioned, you know, that's the reason that my wife uses them is
because they fit her ears better. And so you get a lot of the advantages of an AirPods Pro.
You've got the noise cancellation.
You've got the integration, easy to set up, you know, all the things that you love about
an AirPod.
But if you don't want something tiny like an AirPod or AirPods Pro, if you want something
a little bit bigger because it's more stable, you get that with Beats Pro.
So for some people, you know, we talk about AirPods all the time and I love AirPods, but
let's not forget that PowerBeats, you know, PowerBeats Pro are for some people the perfect
device.
And this video sort of shows it.
It does go a little long, but it's fun.
It's fun.
In the know.
In the know.
Since we were talking about fitness, I thought I'd bring this up today.
If you have the settings on your Apple Watch, and let's say that you're out walking.
So my wife and I just, back in November, went to Athens.
We did a lot of walking, right?
All the different sites and things to see.
And if you have it turned on, I forget exactly what they call it down here.
Let's see.
It's down here in this area.
Start workout reminder.
So as you're walking, if you don't put a workout on your watch, it will detect after maybe about 10 or 15 minutes you walk it around that it'll pop on the watch and say, hey, it looks like you're doing an outdoor walk.
Do you want to record this?
Which my wife and me personally, I always appreciate that.
I'm like, yes, that's great.
Thank you.
I do want to record this walk and I'm going to get some additional steps.
You can also make sure that this is turned on in the watch app on your iPhone.
It's called start workout reminder.
So theoretically, if you're out walking and I'm not really sure if it uses the gyroscope or, you know, it's watching your GPS location, but it will determine that, hey, it looks like you're working out.
You want to record this workout.
And we love that because it's just like, yeah, that's exactly what I'm doing.
And I do want to get those additional steps.
However, I find that it doesn't always work.
like I'd be walking my wife and I'll be walking my watch might detect it and say do you want to
record this workout but then she's upset because her watch didn't ask the same question it's like
we're both out walking so here's just a quick other little tip that I wanted to add to that
if you have that turned on that in and of itself is a good thing to make sure that it's on I believe
it's on by default but you can go and check on that but if it's not and you're out walking instead
of like stopping going into the workout app, you could always use Siri to just say, Hey,
start a outdoor walk, right? You could just use your, your, I usually put my watch up to my mouth
and say, Sally, start a 30 minute outdoor walk or start an outdoor walk workout. And I've just
tried to tell my wife, like that might be an easier way than instead of having to remember to like
tap through and like go and find the actual workout of an outdoor walk. You can just use Siri
to be able to say, you know, start this, start this workout. So that's, that was my tip today,
making sure you have that, uh, start workout reminder turned on. And theoretically it will
alert you that it looks like that you're working out. You know, you can say, no, I don't want to
record this, but I usually say, yes, go ahead and record the walk. And then it'll determine when you
stopped. And so it'll stop it or it'll ask you even then additionally, then today, did you,
Are you done working out?
And you can say yes.
But if it doesn't have it on or whether or not you have that turned on, you can just use Siri to tell your watch to start tracking your workout or walking around, for example.
Okay.
Thank you for this tip.
I like it for the opposite of the reason you just said.
Oh.
Which is I did not know that this setting existed, and I have just turned off start workout reminder.
Oh, you don't like it?
I don't because the, what I find is oftentimes I'll be walking around downtown someplace
and I feel like invariably it's, you know, I am 10 feet from my destination.
That's true.
And my watch says, now, do you want to start a workout?
I'm like, come on, I'm not going to work out.
I'm just walking.
Maybe I'm walking fast and I'm basically there.
I'm already there.
So, yeah.
So, and I have found, I have never found it useful and I have sometimes found it.
I always find it amusing, but I've never found it useful.
So I have now turned it off.
So that is awesome. But what is, what I did see is just below that there is, in fact,
there's what you're showing, cause you're showing it on the, on the iPhone. I'm looking at it.
I am. And this is an older article that I'm linking to here. So I may not have the picture.
Yeah. The current picture there's on my watch, there's a section called reminders
in settings under workout settings, workout reminders. And there's three options. The first
one is start workout. I just turned that off. Thank you, Brett. I know that exists,
but the other two are resume workout and end workout. And I will tell you,
Oh, I actually like the end. And these are all turned on by default.
I liked the end workout one. And the way,
the reason I like it is many times I will be, I mean,
a perfect example is I'll be on the treadmill and, you know,
I finished my workout. I'm sort of tired. I'm like, you know,
groggy going back, you know, changing. And then like 60 seconds later,
my watch says, I think you're done with your workout.
Are you ready to stop? I'm like, Oh yes, yes. I'm totally done.
I totally forgot. Yeah. You know? Yeah.
And so I love that it will sense, I think that this workout's over.
Should I go ahead and turn this off?
I'm like, yes.
So that's totally useful.
You like that one.
Okay, good.
I like that one.
So I'm going to keep that one turned on.
And I'm very glad you told me how to turn that one off.
So thank you.
That's a good tip for perhaps the opposite reason that you intended.
Hey, it still works.
My tip has to do with notifications on the lock screen.
And before I get to the actual tips, and this is probably a reminder of what you already
know, although my hope is that when people hear it, they'll like, oh, now I understand how it all
works. And let me tell you where it comes from. I have a lot for years now, I've had some cameras
in my house, like these Eufy cameras, you have Eufy cameras now too. And I have it set up that
I don't get tapped, but if I look at my notification screen, I will see, or if you have ring cameras,
the same thing, I will, you know, maybe see somebody walking in the house or walking in the
backyard. And it will, the way it comes by default is it's just that little banner that goes across.
It'll say like person detected with like a tiny little picture in the side.
The tip I was going to have today was going to be a reminder that if you just put your finger on, if you touch and hold on the notification for a second, it will pop up.
And then for most of the apps, I now have a much bigger view of the camera angle.
Like I'm looking at one right now that now I can see, oh, I see why there's motion detected in my front yard 36 minutes ago.
that's just because somebody was walking past my house. It's nothing major, but that was going to
be my tip is just to hold down to make it pop up. The reason this has come up for me, I use it a lot,
but recently for Christmas time, me and my siblings and my sibling spouses, we sort of got
together, some of us in person, some of us virtually, and we did a, like a dirty Santa exchange,
you know, where that is, where everybody sort of puts in a present and then you pick a present and
you don't know who's giving you the present. So it's sort of random and, you know, and then you
presents from people and stuff like that. It's a fun way to do it. It makes, you know, it means
that you just have to buy one gift and you never know what you're going to get. And sometimes
they're useful and sometimes they're funny. And sometimes they're both. The one that I ended up
getting was one of these bird feeders that has a camera built into it. So I set it up. I haven't
actually completely set it up yet. It's just sitting on a table in my backyard, but it's really funny
because I'll just be looking at my, at my, my phone and I'll see, look at that beautiful red
cardinal that is, you know, putting his face way up close and like eating his food. And I'm like,
oh, that's sort of cute. And so I will, with this tip, I can sort of hold down and pop it up and see
that cardinal bigger. And then of course, if I want to, I can use the app and I can like download
the video and say all my bird friends and stuff like that. So, so all of this led me to say,
so that was going to be my tip is just hold down, but I actually want to make my tip a little bit
broader today. And this is on the Apple website. There are three ways that you can work with
notifications on your lock screen. The first one that you can do is if you, when you're looking
at your lock screen, you will see the notifications will be grouped. And if you have the AI, it will
give you like a little summary of them. But if you tap once on the group, it will expand the group.
And I'm sure we've all seen this happen before. You tap once and it will expand it. And then
And you can see all the different notifications.
And if you want to unexpand that, there's going to be a little thing that says show less at
the very top and you tap that and it goes down again.
So you can make it go up, go down and you can turn off the grouping messages, but I
actually like it.
So like all the messages from within app, like all of my bird notifications are going
to be grouped together and I can expand them and then I can prep that show less and go
down.
So that's the first one.
The second tip is the one that I mentioned that for many apps and camera apps are a perfect
example, but it's not just camera apps like the Reddit app on my phone.
will sometimes give me a notification.
And if I hold down on that, it will expand it
and it will show like the picture or whatever,
you know, the algorithm wants to show me.
But many notifications, if you tap and hold,
you can either view an expanded version of it.
Some apps offer quick actions that you can do.
So that's my second tip is to tap and hold on notifications.
Doesn't work on all notifications, but many times it does.
And then the third one,
and this is the one that perhaps people always know
is if you're looking at a notification and you're like,
oh, I want to do more on that.
You can tap it.
And of course, it will open up the notification app.
So it will open up the Reddit app or the Eufy app or the whatever app it is or whoever the
notification is, the New York Times app, whatever it is.
So those are the three things to know is expanding and collapsing groups, tap and hold to make
it big and sometimes act upon it, and then just single tap to launch the apps.
I'm sure we've all done this in the past.
And I knew these in the back of my head.
But when I saw them all grouped together on the Apple website and you're showing them
screen right now, then I was like, Oh, now I see the big picture of all the things you can do with
notifications. And it was a nice little reminder for me. So maybe this is helpful for others as well.
Excellent. Yeah. It's good to know how to better interact with some of the, the notifications.
And frankly, I see a lot of people that when, when I look at their screen, I'm like, how can you not
be taking better advantage of either the grouping side or like get rid of some of these anyway,
it's almost like, you know, there's too many notifications sometimes. And I just,
I always enjoy knowing a little bit of additional ways and methods to interact with them or to lessen them or to just be able to better handle them.
Because like a lot of times when they're grouped together, like you're saying, I'll just dismiss all the group, like all the Eufy camera.
Like I know somebody's out, you know, working in the yard or something like that.
I don't need to go through each one of them so I can dismiss the entire group, you know, that kind of a thing.
So it's good just to have that knowledge that, you know, you're not wasting time on doing that.
Good stuff.
Thanks, Jeff.
As always, always enjoy your in the news blog post and doing the podcast with you.
So much so that we'll talk with you next week and we'll hear about the NBA game that you watch on your Vision Pro next week.
Thanks, Brett. Bye-bye, everybody.
