Brett Burney from http://www.appsinlaw.com
Jeff Richardson from http://www.iphonejd.com
Welcome to In The News for April the 17th, 2026. I am Brett Burney from AppsinLaw.com.
And this is Jeff Richardson from iPhoneJD. Hey, Brett, I missed you last week. I missed everybody
last week. Yeah, we're back. I know. You were on vacation. It sounds like you had a good time.
We'll get into maybe a little bit of what you were doing while you were on vacation last week. But
yes, I missed it. I missed talking about it. I don't even know if you had a post last week,
because I think I went to the website because I just I was unplugged.
That was my habit. But that's OK. That's OK, because we're going to catch up on a few things today.
Namely, why don't we start off with what I kind of predict as the big story that's been going on?
Apple creating some glasses. We're talking about not drinking glasses for an old fashioned, which you make a very nice one.
Thank you, Jeff.
But we're talking about eyeglasses here, right?
Now, most people know about the meta Ray-Bans.
I think it's what we generally call them, right?
That's what everybody knows.
I remember we had Steve Embry on our podcast a few months ago, and he was wearing the meta Ray-Bans.
I think we even saw a tech show, and it's like it's hard to know whether they're real glasses or not.
But it's like, well, Apple sounds like they want to get in on this party a little bit.
And I say, let's go.
Bring them out.
There's been all kinds of rumors these last couple of weeks.
They have been.
You know, you know that I very much think that this is all the future.
And in fact, when we were at Tech Show a couple of weeks ago, one of the sessions that I taught was about, you know, all of these augmented reality things, including these types of products that are around now and coming out in the future.
So I'm definitely, in fact, there was a funny article in the ABA Journal that-
I was trying to find it.
Shows me looking a little dorky wearing my Vision Pro glasses.
You know, I figured they would pick that one.
I'll see if I can find it while you talk.
But regardless, so I think this is the future.
And it's not just me.
In fact, there was another article that, you know, I had linked to this week that was from Tom's Guide.
That was one of the many interviews of Apple executives during the Apple 50th anniversary.
And it was really good because it had John Ternus and it had Greg Joswiak, who people call Jaws.
And they were talking not only about Apple history, but what's coming in the future.
And one of the things that they mentioned, I mean, Vision Pro is such a small percentage of Apple sales.
And yet when they were talking about the future of Apple, yes, of course, they talked about the iPhone.
And of course, they talked about the Mac.
But they specifically talked about, you know, not the Vision Pro specifically, but augmented reality devices, which makes you think that this is going beyond, you know, the Vision Pro can definitely do augmented reality.
But another way to do it is like glasses.
You know, there's also been all of these rumors that because Meta, you know, has had a lot of, you know, they have a ton of sales of these Ray-Ban glasses.
And of course, they also have what the Oakley versions of it, too, that, you know, Apple has seen, wow, this product category is a little bit more interesting than we thought.
And so, of course, Apple has been working on stuff in the labs.
And so anyway, Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, who always seems to have good sources within Apple, has gotten some information that he says of things that Apple is working on on their glasses product.
And, you know, he says that some of it may be out, you know, perhaps even as soon as next year.
Two details in this story that struck me as interesting.
Well, I guess three details.
I mean, the third detail is the obvious one.
We've heard the rumors that Apple is working on this.
Of course, it makes sense because, you know, Vision OS is an operating system which works
with the Vision Pro, but could work with other devices, too, that are not the Vision Pro
that are different.
And so I love the idea that Apple is pushing the envelope on this because I'm just very
excited about this future world in which, you know, something that's, you know, on your
body, perhaps on your eyes, can augment the world around you and give you information.
We talked about this in the past.
So anyway, the other two deals, besides the fact that they're very serious about it and they have some dates coming up, is he talked about the designs.
So Meta, one of the reasons that I think Meta was successful with their product was that they used a good design.
They teamed up with Ray-Ban to have that iconic Wayfair glasses that everybody knows.
And I think all the way back to the 1980s with Tom Cruise and Risky Business and stuff like that.
Everybody knows that look, and they look good.
And so Apple also would need to have something that would look good.
But instead of pairing with somebody else, he says that Apple is tapping into its in-house design folks.
And, you know, Apple has always had pretty good design for a long time now.
And he says that they have four different designs that they're testing.
And, you know, perhaps it means that you would be able to get these Apple glasses in four different designs.
One of them, I think, is funny, is going to be similar to the glasses that Apple CEO Tim Cook wears.
Why not make one similar to what the glasses, sort of a slimmer rectangular design?
But also that he would have a larger rectangular design.
So, you know, if you want to look like Tim Cook, you can get an Apple glasses, a larger rectangular frame, which is not unlike, you know, what Ray-Ban has.
And then a larger sort of oval or circular frame, which is very similar to sort of what I have on right now.
And then a smaller circular option.
I don't know if it would be quite as small as like, you know, John Lennon type glasses.
But, I mean, clearly, I just think it's interesting that there are people at Apple looking at the entire universe of glasses.
What are the most popular designs that people are most happy with?
And instead of having just one single type of Apple glasses, let's have a couple of different styles.
And then, of course, each of those would be in a couple of different colors as well.
It means that Apple would have a lot of different SKUs, which is an issue.
But, you know, they have that now with the iPhone.
You can get the iPhone in four different colors and a bigger size and a smaller size.
I mean, they've done this before, and they could do it again.
So it'll be interesting.
So that was one interesting detail.
And then the other interesting detail that he reported was that Apple is looking at having some iconic feature.
And I think about the fact that with the AirPods, for example, going way back to when the iPod was a thing over 20 years ago, Apple had the iconic white earbuds with the string.
And that was such an iconic thing that they had advertising campaigns that were just dancing silhouettes.
And the only thing you could recognize was their headphones.
And now, of course, with the cords and now with the wireless version of the AirPods and AirPods Pros, anyone can look at that and you instantly know that it's an AirPods.
There's no question because of mostly the color but also the shape.
And so his thought is that Apple is trying to do something similar so that as soon as you see somebody wearing Apple glasses, you would instantly know that it's Apple glasses.
Part of that's a branding thing, but it's also sort of almost like a privacy thing.
Apple is very interested in privacy, obviously.
That's a very important concept to them.
And one of the knocks on this product category,
I mean, think all the way back to the Google Glass,
you know, things that came out many, many years ago,
is that people think, well, it's creepy.
Somebody is, you know, are they recording me?
Are they not recording me?
What information do they have?
You don't know.
And so one way for Apple to get in front of that
would be have something like, for example,
maybe it would be, you know,
the part of the glasses that has whatever camera
that they would use.
Maybe it's something that even, you know,
no matter which of the four designs that you would get, if they end up having the four different
designs, they would all have something on them that would make it unmistakably Apple,
just from a branding standpoint, but also would unmistakably signal to you when the glasses are
looking at the world around you and when they're recording, because that's something that would be
very important and so obvious. I mean, everybody knows there's a creepiness factor if you're being
recorded and don't know it. And yet we also know that we live in a world today that anyone can just
sort of stick their iPhone in their shirt pocket and be recording you without you knowing that
So we already live in a world where people can record things around us 24-7, not to mention the cameras that are around.
So I trust Apple to think long and hard about the privacy implications and get the best of it.
One thing that's related to this that I keep thinking about is augmented reality devices, whether they be glasses,
or we also have heard rumors that maybe a future version of AirPods would have some sort of a camera in it.
a camera could be used to take pictures and video. And some people like that. Some people talk about
like if one of the things they like about the Metaway bands is you can be interacting with
a toddler. And instead of holding your camera in your hand, you could be, you know, playing with
them and it's, and it's recording these moments without you having to hold something up. So I
understand the advantage of that in some situations, but one of the advantages, this product category
is it could learn things about the world around you, such as answering questions about what you're
seeing, giving you information in a way that looks at the world around you, but doesn't
necessarily record it.
You know, think about the way that the iPhone can already, even when it has the ability to
take pictures, but it also has the technology just to use, you know, the infrared laser things
to see the world around you and understand the shapes of things.
So, I mean, there could be ways in which an Apple pair of glasses would be, quote unquote,
looking at the world so that it can report back to you, but it wouldn't actually be recording
the world.
And a good example of that is in the Apple Maps feature today, if you're walking around
a downtown area, downtown New York, downtown Chicago, something like that, because of all
the tall buildings, the GPS coordinates may not be 100% precise.
There's already a feature in Apple Maps where you can say, look at the world around me, and
it will actually look at the buildings around you, and it will get very precise information
on where you are just in the buildings.
That's an interesting feature, but how many people are going to walk around holding their
phone up like that?
I have always thought that Apple developed that feature.
It works today for the iPhone,
but I've always thought that Apple was developing that feature
really for a future world in which your Apple glasses
or AirPods or whatever it is,
is quote unquote looking at the world around you,
not taking a recording of it,
but just gathering that information
so that it could be more precise of telling you,
hey, you got to take a left turn and four steps from now
as you're walking around downtown New York.
So anyway, all sorts of interesting things.
And again, to a certain degree, this is rumors,
to a certain degree, this is reporting,
to a certain degree, it's speculation.
But I just think that this is the interesting time
to be thinking about this.
Because to go back from that video that was in Tom's guide,
I really do think that this is the future.
And I love that Apple is putting time and attention into this.
They're not going to talk about it very much right now, of course.
But I really do think that in a couple of years,
this is going to be a really important big product category.
And I want Apple to be out there in front,
not only because I enjoy using their products,
but also because I trust them on things like privacy
a bajillion times more than I trust Facebook with, you know, the metal Ray-Ban glasses.
Right, right. You know, hearing you talk about this though, Jeff, it almost feels like however
many years ago it was when Google Glasses came out, right? This was sort of that vision of Google
Glasses. Now there was a lot of shortcomings for that, but you know, folks like Andy and I co that
we follow, you know, some people were really, really excited about it. Although I think it had
to have be connected to a hard drive of some kind. I mean, that was sort of the early prototypes.
And when the Metaglasses came out, I kind of thought, okay, well, that's cute.
I see where they're going.
I didn't really expect that it would take off as much as I think it has just because I keep seeing them.
And the price point is great.
I mean, they're only like $350 or something like that.
And I think that's what, you know, to your point, you said right at the beginning there that Apple is noticing that this is a category that, yeah, they could jump into.
And they could probably begin to dominate just based on, you know, what they have seen and observed from from right from from those aspects.
But I like what you were referencing here with German was talking about, you know, Apple, in addition to the size and the shape of it, because I wish it would just be like one of those like 1980s, you know, glasses that wrap around, you know, people that usually wear a mullet.
Apple is exploring a range of finishes, including black, ocean blue, and light brown, because he says with the AirPods and the Apple Watch, to your point you were saying, the goal is that they want to create a design that is instantly recognizable.
I mean, you know, that's that design component that sits on top of, you know, the technology that Apple does so well.
I mean, you know, famously, Meta or Facebook, you know, has teamed up with Ray-Ban, right, or Oakley, as you were saying.
But people recognize that shape.
It's like Apple's got to come up with something that's going to be extremely unique.
now when the vision came out just the last point here you know you and i've talked about this many
times we see the future in that like we know all that's going to do you said this many times jeff
it's just going to continue to shrink it's going to continue to get into the glasses
i didn't expect it to probably happen this quick because i mean it sounds like this could even be
coming out later this year i don't know the product but maybe the announcements maybe in
summer or maybe you know they'll save it to a fall announcement or something that that maybe by 2027
It'll actually be a product. I feel like it's closer to what I thought it was going to be maybe even two months ago or so.
I don't know if that resonates with you.
There's just so much talking about it, so much talking about it.
Again, in that video that I keep referencing, one of the things – I don't remember if it was John Ternus or Jaws, but they were talking about how the Vision Pro as a product is Apple's – this is sort of marketing spin, but I do think it's true.
It's their attempt to reach into the future and bring it forward so that we get a taste of the future today.
And of course, that's why it's so expensive.
And a lot of people don't buy it because of the price.
But Apple cannot be more obvious that this is a category that they're working on.
And so you're right.
It might be coming sooner than we think.
I mean, the Ray-Bans are out there now.
I would be really surprised if we see it this calendar year.
But I tell you what, it may well be next calendar year.
And that would be really interesting.
That would be very interesting.
The last thing quickly I'll say on the privacy side, you know, and maybe instead of rose colored glasses, I have squid ink colored glasses.
Because when you're talking about the privacy thing, I guess I just have no confidence whatsoever that that will be private.
I mean, I foresee a world, Jeff, that I know that Apple could put some fail safes in, some guardrails in there, but I just feel like those will quickly be overcome.
I mean, there's going to be people are going to be wearing these glasses because I'm going to get them as soon as they come out.
I'll get the prescription version.
And I almost to some extent maybe want it to record all the time.
I know that sounds weird and creepy, but, you know,
I've seen all the science fiction movies.
I know how the story is, right?
I've seen my No Order Report.
I've seen all these.
It's like it's going to be inevitable.
And I feel like as much as maybe some of those fail safes and guardrails
can be put in place, because, I mean, even I think the meta Ray-Bans
have like a little, there has a little light that's supposed to be on
when it's recording.
But first of all, who's looking at that?
Maybe some people are if they're nervous about it, but it's just going to become inevitable.
And I don't know.
I just I feel like I'm being too much of a pessimist on this, I guess.
But I just don't have a whole lot of hope that that's going to to me.
The inevitability is, yeah, it's going to be on all the time.
Yeah, it's going to be recording stuff all the time.
That's just inevitable as technology gets a little bit better.
Well, I'll even reference a story we're going to talk about a little bit later about is your iPhone listening to you?
I don't think it is right now, but I think it will be in the near future.
And so that kind of goes along the same little lines there.
That's my pessimism for the day.
Sorry to throw some shade on that.
But I just don't have a lot of hope in that.
Yeah, the word that you just used of inevitability, though, I think is an important one because there is no question that this product category is going to get bigger and bigger.
And to a certain degree, I think people are going to accept a little less privacy than we were used to in the past because we already are that way before.
I mean, heck, in the 1980s, nobody knew where you were.
And, you know, there were no cell phones to call you or anything like that.
And nowadays, you can call somebody wherever they are, and you just expect that if they're not answering you, they must be ghosting you because everybody has an iPhone or an Android in their pocket all the time.
I don't even call my daughter anymore.
I just go and find mine.
And then I was going to say that's the next step.
That's all I do.
The idea of being able to find your family members all the time just seemed like something bananas, not to mention futuristic, not that long ago.
So I do think, but I think inevitability is also an important word to use because this
product category is going to continue to develop one way or the other.
And so I want Apple to be a part of it because I do think that they are, number one, going
to have good design, but number two, they are going to respect or have more careful thought
on privacy than some other companies, the epitome of it being Facebook, which is just so notoriously
ridiculous when it comes to privacy because they're all about marketing and stuff like
that.
So I want them to be a part of it.
And I know some people could say, well, that's a cop out.
You know, Apple doesn't have to be a part of it if it's not a good product category.
But again, but I do think it's a good product category.
We haven't talked about that.
But like it is I think it's so useful to be able to augment the world around you in a million ways.
Whether it's something similar from me seeing a clock on the wall that's not really there on the wall to having all of this information.
I want this world.
I'm excited about it.
And I know it's because I'm a technology geek.
But I'm excited about this capabilities.
And it's going to be bumpy.
But I want Apple to be a part of this next step.
So it'll be exciting.
It's coming very soon.
I mean, I think this is the reality of where AI is going to go for Apple, right?
Oh, part and parcel of this.
Exactly.
Yes.
I mean, that was Isabella Ramsey, right?
I mean, you know, the commercial there, like instead of having to, you know, open her phone
and unlock it and, you know, talk to AI that way, this is what I want.
I mean, even today now I've got ChatGPT and Claude on my phone.
You know, I even have them on my lock screen because to your point, I'm walking around.
I want to know about something or, you know, I've got a question about something in my
environment or, you know, I want to be prepared for a meeting I'm going to, I just pop it open
into chat GPT and start asking questions, right? It's like my personal assistant. And if I can get
better access to that and even give it access it through a camera that's already on my face,
as opposed to looking at my iPhone, like you're talking about that to me is where maybe we can
see the Apple AI going. Yeah. That's one of the most useful things about those AI things for me
nowadays is, you know, what is this? What am I looking at or how do I do this? And you, you know,
point your camera and ask the chat GPT or whatever agents you use. And it's not always correct,
but it gives you good information. In fact, that sort of leads into another story I saw you started
to link to, which was the one that was in the New York Times this week in which Sam Anderson
was criticizing the Ray-Ban glasses because they so often do make mistakes. He says, what is this
bird in front of me? And it says, I don't see a bird in front of you. It's like, I'm looking at
it. What are you talking about? But again, that is, perhaps it's a critique of the Ray-Ban's
current limitations. Perhaps it's a critique of the AI technology, but this will all, I mean,
his article is actually very funny and I think it's meant to be humorous, but it is, it is going to
get better. Like you say, it already has. I mean, think of how, how much AI has come in just the
last two years. It's incredible. Exactly. All right. Well, let's go from a product that may be coming
in the very near future to a product that Jeff Richardson already wears here. I found the ABA
journal story here i just i don't know why sean harrington who was your co-speaker i don't know
why he wasn't wearing the fun look how proud you are you are just so you are beaming there with your
apple vision pro sitting right there well you had a couple of links today let's start off with one
that's kind of on a sad aspect here but i just want to recognize it because i i didn't even see
this story until you had linked to it i remember you have talked about what is this series the
adventure series right that was like one of the first spatial um or immersive videos it was here
you talked about it here was that the lady that was um on uh the um uh the high wire is that right
faith dickie right yes thank you and i got to see that too a couple of years ago we were you let me
borrow put on your uh apple vision pro and you're right it was just insane to be there so we've
wanted more content and wow a tragic like it sounds like you can tell the story a little bit better
there was this was it she's a quadripedic i think and she was uh doing um uh flying some kind of uh
i'm just doing a terrible job of explaining yeah so yeah so the person yeah the person's name was
claire loomis and loomis or loomis how to pronounce it she is a paraplegic and she had been um you
know, an athlete. And she had had like, for example, she had run some major races using some
of these, you know, mechanical legs and stuff like that. And so she's definitely one of these people
that sort of pushes the envelope on what you can do, even if you, you know, even if you can't walk
and she had been flying. I mean, it's one of the things that she uses. She would use these
micro flyers to fly all over the place. And so because she was such a remarkable, remarkable
woman, Apple, you know, the company that they were working with to produce some of these videos for
the Apple Vision Pro teamed up with her to take a flight over the Jordan desert. And I'm sure,
I mean, they did it. Apparently they had the cameras there and they were recording it. And
I'm sure it was breathtaking what she was doing. And yet tragically, as she was landing,
something went wrong and landing. I mean, they always say that any kind of flight that you're
doing, the most dangerous parts of it are takeoff and landing. Right. And so sure enough, when she
was landing, it didn't go well. And she was in the hospital and not too much later, unfortunately,
she died from the injuries. Nobody is claiming that the Apple cameras has anything to do with
the accident or anything like that. The point is just that when you do these death defying things,
sometimes you do not defy death. It's a horrible thing. But I mean, it gets back to that,
that Faith Dickey video that you and I were talking about. I mean, you know, because you
remember when you were wearing it, you feel like you're there and like your stomach drops because
you're like, oh my goodness, if she falls, I know she has a tether, but it's just incredible. Or
another one that I don't remember if you looked at this one, but there's a really interesting one
where these people in Paris are doing parkour, where they are jumping from building. Oh my gosh,
Brett, when I look at that, I'm like, you are crazy. You are nuts because you're going to kill
yourself doing this. They're just going to show you. And again, there's nothing unique about the
Vision Pro. People have been filming themselves doing incredible feats for forever. The Red Bull
has all these athletes that Red Bull sponsors that do these incredible feats. So every once in a while,
one of these things are going to go bad. But so, but we just learned today that the fact that she
passed away was reported by the BBC maybe a year ago. Cause this was like quite a while ago that
happened. But the new information that has come out is people did not realize that they were
filming something. Yeah, here we go. It was in 2024 is when it happened, but people didn't realize
until this week that it just so happened that it was one of these Apple immersive videos that it
happened. So, so again, there's a little bit of an Apple angle to this, to this tragic story.
What's interesting to me is that this happened back in 2024.
It did not stop Apple from doing this series of videos, the Apple and the adventure series, because we now have five of them.
This would have been a sixth one.
But considering the fact that they were filming this back in 2024, I have to imagine that they had planned originally for this to be one of the earlier videos that would have come out.
So I'm glad that Apple is continuing to do this, hopefully safely.
How many others are in the can already?
I mean, if they've been a couple of years, you know, you have been ringing the bell of like, hey, we need more immersive content, like release it.
Maybe it just takes them a little bit longer, I guess, to edit it all out and everything.
But anyway, a tragic story.
I just wanted to recognize it.
Like you said, a little bit of an Apple angle here.
But on a brighter note here, I don't I can't remember if you told me that you had seen this yet or not.
They did release a new immersive video of New York City, the big Apple.
It's I think they call it gliding above the Big Apple.
This must be this isn't a series, right?
This says season one, episode four.
So there's a few others here.
Yeah.
So one of the many series that Apple has as part of its immersive videos is one called Elevated.
And they have they previously had had three episodes.
The very first one was really beautiful.
It was going over Hawaii.
Hawaii is, you know, a lot of people rent rent helicopters and stuff like that in Hawaii just because it's so beautiful.
to see it from the air. And with the elevated Hawaii video, the shtick of all of these videos
is that you're basically taking this overhead view, whether it's airplanes or drones or something
like that. And it is immersive. It's not immersive in the 3D sense of it. I mean, it is 3D, but when
you're up above, you don't sense the 3D nature of it. But what you do sort of sense is the BLA
that you can look up and down and left and right and all around. So it's much better than just
watching like a YouTube video where you're limited to like a tiny little video. And they're very
interesting um uh you know say they already have the hawaii one the main one the switzerland and so
the one that came out uh just late last night is the new york one which i didn't have a chance to
look at it yet because i i didn't stay up as late last night because i had something to do this
morning but um from the reports that i've read it's actually the best one of the series so far
because not only does it have some really cool overhead views but they even sort of drop down to
to the street level in a couple places and they have some iconic new york songs i guess they must
i don't know what it's going to be you know new york new york frank sinatra so whatever it's going
So I cannot wait to watch it tonight.
But the Elevated series is a good one, and I'm glad that they're continuing to release these videos.
Apple is so good at this stuff.
And we all know from our Apple TV devices that one of the best screensavers are those, you know, drone sort of shot screensavers are just so incredible.
And so why not take it to the next level?
Not only have them, you know, these really great 4K videos, but actually make it immersive so it's even better.
So I'm glad that Apple is continuing to develop the series and probably a little less danger involved than the adventure series.
I'm guessing a lot of this is like drone footage.
Yeah.
Well, I would say, you know, as opposed to maybe humans or not.
But anyway, either way, I'm excited to hear how that goes.
And then lastly, you just had a quick little story where you had 10 hacks that every Apple Vision Pro user should know.
What's one or two of your favorite in this list here?
Yeah, in fact, yeah, you caught me off guard.
There was a couple of them in here that jumped out at me, which is why I lead to it.
Yeah, because I don't have one.
So it's like I just looked at it and I'm like, well, Jeff's going to have to talk about here.
They talked about the hidden settings in this.
Control your smart home with spatial widgets.
Some of these I think you've already talked about, like settings.
Yeah, some of them.
Securely share the Vision Pro.
One that I haven't talked about as much on the podcast or on my website is using the Vision Pro as a gaming device.
because I'm not a huge gamer.
I don't own an Xbox or something like that.
But there are some really cool things.
If you are a gamer, there's some neat things.
In fact, it was just in the last two weeks or so
that the last couple of weeks
that Apple, NVIDIA has their gaming platform
and I'm forgetting the name of it.
But-
Cloud XR, it looks like.
Yeah, there you go.
That you can now,
you still need to connect to your computer,
but you can do some really cool things with that.
So they're pushing the envelope here.
But there was an interesting set of tips here
And of course, they also talk about using the Vision Pro as an external screen for your
computer, which I talk about a lot, because I find that so useful from a productivity
standpoint of having, you know, not just my regular Mac screen or not just like the two,
if you have a dual display, but having big ultra wide things, you can do all sorts of
productivity.
I do that quite a bit because sometimes when I'm doing work, I wish I could do it at my
office, but because my office is PCs, but at home where I have my Mac, you know, sometime
I'll be working on something where I have like my Microsoft Word document and I also
have Westlaw opened and I also have like a contract opened and like a bunch of different
things. And the ability to have as many screens as you want around you is just, just, just so
useful. So anyway, it's a, it's a good list of tips in this post. You, uh, you buried the best
tip of all. You can keep your vision pro awake with a post-it note. So that picture here,
this day, this hack takes no technical ability at all. So if you don't want, when you take it off,
apparently you don't want it to go to sleep.
You can just cover the auto sleep sensors with a post-it note.
So, okay, I'll make sure that we include this list of tips for all of our listeners that
have a vision pro and maybe you can make, you know, get yourself a post-it note as well.
Two weeks ago, we reported on this story that I was getting sort of excited about, although
I'm not really sure why I was getting excited about it other than it has the satellite angle
to it because this is uh dan morin uh confirming that amazon has acquired global star which global
star is a big satellite company the the the concern here is that global star was basically apple's
satellite partner right as opposed to i think starlink is the other big one but global star was
the one that apple is using i'm assuming for doing all of the text messaging and the sos and the
emergency, like Global Star is the network that they're using. Well, now that Amazon has acquired
it, what would that mean, if anything, for Apple's satellite technology here? Yeah. The biggest news
of the report here was we expected that if, because Apple owned 20% of the company, so you knew that
Apple was going to have to be involved in the sale and getting their permission. We expected
them to reach a deal where Amazon would continue to support what Apple is doing now. But what I was
happy to see, and again, I guess you could argue this was expected too, was that both Amazon and
Apple went out of their way to point out that they also have all sorts of future initiatives that
they're going to be doing too, because satellite connectivity is just one of those things that you
know is going to get so much better in the future as the technology improves. Just like anything in
life, it starts slow. I mean, but we think of how we all started with the edge network on our iPhones
and then moved on to 3G and 5G and everything else. So you would expect it to get better in the future.
And they made sure to say, just because Amazon's purchasing this, it will continue to get better in the future.
And there's some precedent for this because even though Apple and Amazon compete in some areas, they also work together very closely too.
I mean, of course, Amazon has their servers, which are used.
So many people in the world use Amazon servers for the back end.
Most of us think of Amazon as like where you go to buy a book or something like that.
But Amazon has so many other businesses too.
So Apple and Amazon do have a good working relationship.
And I'm confident that this will work out.
In fact, maybe it'll be better for Apple because Amazon has some of its own satellites as well.
And so maybe, you know, just to be hopeful here, maybe with Amazon involved, since they have so much money, they will make that satellite offering so much better that Apple can do more with it.
Which actually leads to that other article that I linked to from Ryan Christophel of 9to5Mac because he was just speculating on some things that might be coming in the future as Apple does even more with satellites.
And, you know, all of them stem from the idea of what could you do if you have an even faster connector to a satellite?
Yeah.
So, you know, it's just like with your phone.
When you have a faster connection, it means you can stream video.
It means you can stream high-quality video.
It means you can send multimedia.
And the same is true here.
Right now, when you and I have done the tests in the past when you've been hiking, even though you were completely off the grid, you and I could communicate with each other via text.
What you couldn't do is send me pictures and videos, right?
maybe in the future with improved satellite, that is something that you would be able to do.
And so that would be pretty cool if you could do that. So I'm hoping that all these stories come
together, that it's a happy relationship between Apple and Amazon. They push the envelope more. And
again, you're not going to use satellite for day-to-day stuff. Most of the time you're going
to be on Wi-Fi or you're going to be on cellular. But in those situations where you don't have a good
connection, wouldn't it be great if you, it's not just an emergency thing. You could say, help,
I'm lost. But, you know, what if you could do like a full FaceTime video call and on all sorts of other things, you know, to the point that you can actually use it just for entertainment, not just for emergency situations.
That's that's what I hope for.
This story got me excited with number one right here.
5G over satellite.
I feel like there should have been a question mark at the very end there because we don't have that yet.
But I predict that's definitely coming.
But then also in here, I thought this was important.
Reporting indicates that Apple's C2 modem that's going to, we expect it will be in the iPhone 18 this year, that that modem itself will add support.
Now, that's important because I think the 17, does it have the, is it a C1 modem or does it still have the Qualcomm modems?
We've talked about the Qualcomm modems.
Okay, still the Qualcomm modem.
Yeah, okay.
Apple started.
That to me is exciting.
Yeah, I mean, right now, I think it's the iPhone Air that's got the Apple modem.
But as Apple gets more comfortable with their own modem, the C1, the C2, eventually the C3,
of course, they're going to bring it to all their products.
It's going to be in the 17.
And you're right that one of the things that they might do is do things with satellite connectivity
that Apple wants to do that Qualcomm won't necessarily support.
So this is an example of Apple loves to own the entire widget because that way they can
do whatever they want and and maybe you know owning the owning the modem as part of that
i think what you said quickly there about when we first had the iphones with that edge network i
mean at the time we thought it was absolutely incredible but you look even if i go to lte today
jeff i complain i'm like this is crazy that i'm not on 5g anymore and to me this is exactly where
i think in the process where we are with the satellite because we can do a lot right now over
satellite it's just a matter of it getting better and i think eventually we will have 5g over
satellite and to me i'm i'm just i'm excited for that yeah well let's let's stay in space with
iphones these are iphone physical iphones literally in space uh i just thought it was great the way
you started off your post today because not only have we talked about this that the astronauts and
artemis 2 actually had iphones i think you even had a story here that even the spacesuits had a
pocket to hold the iPhone, which is very much nicer because I just usually put it in my back
pocket of my pants, but I'm glad that they had spacesuits that were actually designed to hold
that there. And, you know, I, I saw a lot of the pictures and stuff that came out, you know,
the people were, the astronauts were using their iPhone to take pictures. In fact, I think this is
one of them here, the NASA release behind me of actually them using the iPhone. And I thought
this was interesting. Did you say this? Like the iPhones weren't connected, not even wifi.
And so they could take a picture on the iPhone, but then they had to actually connect to a computer to copy the pictures over.
I mean, so much technology, but then we had to kind of go backwards, I guess, in some of that, too.
Yeah. And so that's why it's fun that we got to see some of those iPhone pictures.
But obviously there's a limit to what, you know, there's obviously a limit to bandwidth when you're in space.
I mean, they use those deep space networks to send video and stuff like that back and forth.
And so now that the iPhones, in fact, I have to admit, the splash landing was one week ago today.
It was fun to watch that.
It was a successful landing.
And so now that it's been a week, I actually had assumed that by now we would see a huge number of all of these pictures and videos because obviously the iPhones are back on Earth.
But I guess NASA is just going to go through them and release them over time to sort of keep up the enthusiasm.
Part of this is sort of NASA keeping up the enthusiasm.
So they want to stretch it out perhaps as long as possible.
But I know that there's all of these amazing pictures.
You know, we all know it today.
Now that it's so easy to take pictures with your iPhone, you take a lot more pictures now
than you used to way back in the day when you had to use, you know, snap, snap, shoot cameras.
And so I do hope that sometime soon we see a number of pictures.
As I mentioned in the post, there was a video today.
You know, they did have some videos when the astronauts were in space.
And at one point on the video, yeah, you have it right there.
that the astronaut was holding the iPhone in their hand to show that they were using the iPhone camera
to take a picture of the lunar surface. And I'm like, oh, that's really, that'll be sort of fun
to see that one out. So, but also, you know, pictures of the astronauts themselves, just
taking, you know, fun pictures of what they were doing in space. I'm looking forward to seeing all
of this come out. And a nice coup for Apple because, you know, Apple didn't pay for this or anything
else. But, you know, it's nice marketing for them. And it's nice that the iPhone, you know, we know
So NASA is historically just so demanding that if you're going to take something into space, it's got to be tested six ways to Sunday for all of these different things.
And so it's a nice coupe.
I'm sure Apple wasn't planning when they were designing the iPhone 17 Pro Max to make it space ready.
But it's nice that it went through all the tests and it was deemed to be ready.
So it just means that in the future we're going to be seeing a lot more of this, a lot more of iPhones in space.
That's what I was asking, like, why the 17 Pro Max?
Like, that's your model, Jeff.
Like, that's the largest and the heaviest model.
Why not the Airs?
I feel like it could have been floating around a lot easier up there.
But, you know, I mean, I feel like it's probably more storage, right?
Better cameras on there.
Like, you've got the best camera that Apple can put on a phone right now.
And remember, it doesn't matter how much it weighs when you're in space because it floats around.
So you don't need an iPhone Air in space.
But you've got to come back and land in the water.
Anyway, that was fascinating, by the way.
I had that on live, just even seeing the splashdown.
I mean, it was so historic.
And now I have seen a couple of the videos that they were taking, like when they actually
opened the capsule after it, you know, sat there for in the water for a while and bobbed
around and like going, there was, I guess, one of those rescue people like actually went
into the capsule and they were just so happy.
Like everybody was just so great.
It was, it was really a nice time to watch.
And can we just mention, I mean, you've got the earth behind you right there, but I mean,
And I had a link to this in my post that, you know, one of the iconic original iPhone wallpapers was the blue marble picture of Earth that was taken from space.
And I wrote about that a super long time ago, back in 2010 on my website.
And, of course, since since I wrote about that in 2010, there have been other ones that have been put together over time.
But one of the fun parts of Artemis is that this is the first time that we once again have a picture of the entire Earth.
But it's a true picture.
It's not just stitched together.
The one, the iPhone wallpaper back in 2010 that you're showing on the screen right now, that actual picture was not taken by the Apollo mission.
That picture was taken by satellites.
And so there was a whole bunch of pictures that they stitched together to make the globe.
But it's been, you know, so long since we've had a true picture, the one that you're showing right there, which was the actual original picture that was taken from Apollo of the entire Earth in just a single picture without stitching together.
And we all know from taking our own pictures, you know, I can use my iPhone to stitch together pictures.
But, you know, it's not perfect when you stitch together.
It's always better to have just a full picture of the thing.
And so now with the astronauts and the Artemis mission, we once again have some really cool pictures of the Earth taken from space, like the one that's over your shoulder right now.
We also have the amazing eclipse where they saw, you know, the moon blocking the sun.
And, you know, we sometimes see a solar eclipse on Earth, but it was so much more interesting to see it on space because the moon was so much bigger than the sun that it was at different angles and stuff like that.
So, anyway, cool pictures.
Well, we can't all be astronauts, but if you are a little more interested in this, you can go visit the Space Center Houston.
Apparently, you had a fun time.
I bet you used your iPhone 17 Pro Max to take some pictures while you were there.
Not from the moon, but it was good.
I will just say, you know, I went to NASA in Houston when I was a kid.
It was really nice to go back again with my son.
It's always a fun place to visit.
They just do such a great job there.
You get to go to Johnson Space Center.
But I just want to say that being there while we actually had astronauts in space while I was there, it just added a whole dimension to being there.
You know, we were in the building looking at the original mission control for the 1960s at the same time that other people in the building were, you know, talking to astronauts.
So it just it made the whole thing cool.
It's a really cool place to visit.
You know, if you're interested in space, as I certainly am.
I mean, when you go into this huge hangar to see one of the original Saturn V rockets, which were used to launch the Apollo mission, and you see in person how huge it is, it's just awe-inspiring.
I don't know. I'm a space. I always had an interest in it. It was fun to be there.
It's definitely, if you ever find yourself visiting Houston,
thumbs up for the Space Center Houston. It's very cool.
Well, you eventually came back down to Earth and reviewed the Anchor Prime wireless charging station.
This was pretty cool. You only did this a couple of days ago.
So I think you were probably using it maybe while you were on vacation.
We've talked about these three-in-one MagSafe wireless chargers.
And I think like you, I have two of them.
I had that Anker Cube 3-in-1.
I've got this U-Green 3-in-1 foldable.
That's the one that I travel with.
But now, thanks to you, I'm going to have to spend another $120 to get this Anker Prime Wireless Station because it looks really cool.
I remember we talked about this, like Anker was going to release it, but then you were able to get one.
And it sounds like you like this a lot.
It even has a fan in it to keep it cool.
When this came out, you know, Anker does such a good job with their chargers that even when I always thought that, you know, the Ugreen device was so useful when it came out last year.
I'm like, gosh, it'd be interesting to see Anker's take on this.
And this is not Anker's first three-in-one portable charger.
They've had other ones too.
But this particular design, I just think really nails it.
It feels really good in your hand.
It's nice.
It works really well.
It does everything that you would expect for it to do.
It's got the fastest MagSafe charging, and it has this advantage of the internal fan so that one of the knocks on wireless charging is that it can produce heat.
We all know that because if you charge your iPhone on a wireless charger and you pick it up, you can feel that it's sort of hot in the back, right?
And if you ever get into a situation where it's getting a little too warm, these things will bring down the charging level to accommodate for the heat.
And so one of the advantages of the Anker device is because it has this very quiet, you really don't hear it, but this fan inside of it, it can actually cool it.
And so it can try to maintain the best charge longer.
And I mean, I can't tell you from my own tests over just two weeks that I ran scientific tests to compare it one way or the other.
But Anker does have some claims on their website that they think that it really is a certain percentage higher.
So that's one nice thing about it.
I also really like that the part of the charger that holds your Apple Watch, it's just really nicely done.
You can see it in the picture you're showing there that like it flips up, but like you push it in and it snaps closed.
It's just, you know, when Apple makes devices, one of the things that makes them nicer is the fit and the finish and design.
And I love that Anker has really tried to do, they don't do it in all their products, but for a number of Anker products, they really do spend the time to think about how to make it better and more useful.
And this design really nails it.
So again, if you have the Ugreen, as you and I both do, I don't know if it's worth spending $120 just to get something that's nicer.
But I'm a little jealous of my wife.
I bought this because my wife needed one.
And because I had read those reviews that you and I talked about, I'm like, well, let's get what I think might be the nicest one.
And I tell you, after using it, it's really nice.
So if you're in the market for one of these devices, this is absolutely the one that I recommend.
I like that you put them side by side here.
So the Anker is definitely shorter than the Ugreen.
But now I imagine just looking at this, it's probably, what do you say, bulkier?
A little thicker.
A little thicker, but it's also tapered.
It's thicker than the Ugreen.
And I noticed that too.
Yeah, because one of the things about the Ugreen, I like it.
But if I reach over and I usually have – I put my thumb on the bottom and then my fingers on top to pull the iPhone off.
But I've noticed on this one here that the place where you're putting your iPhone is a little raised up from the back.
And so I can – I mean it's hard for me to explain, but I can see immediately that that's going to be easier for me to use my thumb and finger to grab it off of the charging as it –
Absolutely.
Even a little bit more than the Ugreen one.
Absolutely. That's absolutely true.
It's just another example.
It's tiny little things, and you add all these tiny little things together, and it's like this is just a really, really good product.
so um it's really nice i think now because i i love you know i can't be without these like i have
one now that's always on my bedside table and now when i travel like this is this is it because
everything can be charged on this even when we travel my wife doesn't have one and so we end up
taking turns of like she needs her apple watch charge so i just replace it you know off of mine
or she charges her airpods there it's just so convenient to have all of that there which is nice
let's do a quick in the show segment jeff you mentioned in the show yes uh margo's got money
troubles a new episode a new show apparently uh it's not a movie right this is an actual show
this is an episode yeah yeah um it looks interesting michelle pfeiffer is it just like
not a name that you hear too much more these days but it looks like it could be a fun uh a fun thing
to watch over the weekend?
Yeah, starring Elle Fanning.
It's a dramedy,
so it's going to be comedy.
It's going to be drama.
And it's getting some really good early reviews.
This is one that's gotten a lot of buzz.
And so it's got a good cast in it.
And I'm looking forward to it,
to see it.
Greg Nears in it,
a bunch of other folks.
But I'm going to start watching it this weekend.
It's gotten some really good reviews.
And I like that we're in this period of time right now
where I think Apple TV is coming out with new shows
almost every single week.
So it's sort of an embarrassment of riches.
It's great.
Keep them coming.
Well, you know, you and I have talked several times about how we are fans of Apple TV Plus, and we like so many shows that they put out.
I thought it was so interesting you link today to a list of the worst rated Apple TV shows and movies.
Now, I guess you could say, you know, a bad rating on Apple TV is, you know, a good rating on maybe some of the other platforms.
I don't know.
But I looked through this list that I was kind of laughing because I remember some of these shows.
I don't know that I've watched a whole lot of these shows, but I remember I think what is number one and two here?
It was The Family Plan.
So The Family Plan is number two, and The Family Plan two is number one as the worst rated Apple TV show to be put out.
That's with Mark Wahlberg.
I did not see either one of those.
I mean, I did see some buzz when it came out.
I mean, this is all, by the way, taken on Rotten Tomatoes ratings, which, you know, sometimes I disagree with Rotten Tomatoes, but oftentimes they do get it right.
The number three of this entire list, the only one that I've seen is the number three on their list, which is Argyle, which is a movie that my wife and I watched it.
And there were some parts of it that were fun and but it just didn't hold together.
And really, OK, you know, can I say that I regret the fact that I watched it?
I mean, there were a couple of parts that were OK.
I probably could have used that two hours more wisely to watch a better show, I suppose, in this age of so much good stuff.
So it's I mean, I will say it wasn't great.
I wouldn't recommend it.
Do I totally regret that I watch it?
I don't know.
The Family Plan, on the other hand, that's one doesn't surprise me.
But I mean, of course, the article is fun because sometimes it's funny to talk about things that are losers.
But it is a reminder that, you know, I love that there's now enough content on Apple TV that not only do they have their just incredible shows, you know, the Pluribuses, the Severances, you know, the For All Mankind's and the other ones that are just so incredible.
But it means that there's going to be some stinkers in the bunch, too.
And so it's a fun list.
Can't be perfect all the time.
I mean, again, as I mentioned, a bad rating on Apple TV is I think if I were to do a movie or a show, I would be thrilled with a bad rating on Apple TV Plus at this point.
in the entertainment world right now.
Last little video that you'll link to.
Folks, no, your iPhone is not listening to you all the time.
It's just funny.
My wife has been telling me this, Jeff.
She thinks that the iPhone is listening to her
because she talks about, hey, I want to get like a new,
you know, soap dispenser for the bathroom.
And she picks up her phone.
She starts scrolling through Instagram.
And what does she see?
soap dispensers for her bathroom.
And she has become a little bit on the paranoid side.
So I was thrilled that you linked to this today because apparently people have
been saying this so much that Sunday morning show got David Pogue to track
down the answer to this.
And the answer is experts.
No,
the answer is not listening to you,
but it's a great,
it's a great little quick video.
And then a followup article is even better.
I think on this as well.
So many people are convinced that their iPhone must be listening to them because we've all seen the phenomenon you talk about.
You're interested in a product, and the next thing you know, you're seeing ads for it.
And you're like, how in the world does they know to show me the ads?
And the reality is, David Fog explains, well, first of all, they're not – you know, Apple has all sorts of things on their device that they would not allow third parties to record you without telling you.
They even ran tests on Android phones where things are a little bit more loosey-goosey in terms of what third parties can do.
And even on Android phones, they've ran the tests.
I'm like, no, they're not, there's no listening.
They're nothing like that.
So the next question is, well, how do you explain the phenomena that we've all seen?
And the experts in the adage, we explained to David Pogue that it's because there are
so many other metrics that advertisers can use, whether it is, you know, they know, they
don't know you precisely who you are, but they often know, you know, approximate ages,
approximate issues of, you know, things about maybe what you do, where you live.
There's enough metrics that when they put them all together, they can come up with a pretty good guess of the type of person you are.
And they have a pretty good guess that, you know, there's a good chance you're the sort of person that is interested in soap dispensers.
And then there's also a certain degree of they're going to throw 20, 30, 100 different products in front of you.
But the only one that's going to catch your attention is that soap dispenser because that's what was interesting you.
And so you may forget the fact that only 1% of the products were actually something you're just going to it's going to seem like, hey, that's the number one thing they told me was that soap dispenser.
so there are explanations for it but as david po concludes in this video notwithstanding the
science i guarantee you that a lot of people are going to be convinced of nope i don't believe it
it must be listening to me because there's no other explanation so it's it was a fun article
i mean i was actually thrilled to see him do the research and actually try to figure it out
yeah he talked to one privacy advocate here well david shuffman but there was another gentleman
that's like a marketing ad right that he talked to at the beginning here and they were just showing
video it's like there's no way at least right now again i'm going back to my squid ink colored
glasses there's no way right now that anybody could be listening to the billions and billions
of phones going you know at all the time and then creating uh content that's going to be you know
responding to that at least not yet but what really is the culprit here is what it comes down to is
what do you scroll with right and even they even say that you may be thinking about soap dispensers
maybe my wife mentioned it to me but guess who in our house was already scrolling for soap dispensers
right exactly and because you're the same wi-fi network yeah you're on the same ip address they
can target it there they're not doing it you know specifically but i just thought that was probably
one of the number one uh you know culprits if you if you will from this it's like no no no there's
there's a realist and you know realistic answer and a reason why here that you're probably seeing
this not to mention that you're already primed to see that kind of a thing right you don't even know
how often that you see pants ads until you're thinking about pants and all of a sudden you
recognize the pants ad you know ads for pants all the time that kind of thing so i'll make sure that
both the story and uh the video is linked in the show notes because i think it is just a good even
the gentleman the marketing guy said no absolutely not your iphone is not listening to you but then
david poke pushes him a little bit he goes oh yeah no even my own family believes that it is it's
like you know it's really hard to convince people but it is not listening to you let's go to in the
know in the know uh we talked about apple find my quite a bit for finding people tracking people
How about tracking luggage with AirTags?
All of my Apple devices have Find My built in.
And when I boot up one of my devices, like if I get a new MacBook Pro, for example, it
immediately connects to my Find My account through my iCloud account.
Or if I get a new iPhone, if I get into my new AirPods.
But you know, something that I had not thought of adding to my Find My was my Apple Pencil
Pro.
apparently it doesn't connect the apple pencil pro to your find my account by default jeff and i just
hadn't even thought about it it's not like i needed to but you know the apple pencil pro is something
that can get lost pretty easy so it's like if i can put it in to find my i would like that now
first of all you can see that i'm emphasizing apple pencil pro because this is the only version
of the apple pencil that does have find my support built in if you've got a first generation or second
generation or that usbc uh apple pencil it is not going to work it has to be an apple pencil pro
and of course the apple pencil pro only works with your ipad right so if you want to include
your apple pencil pro with your find my items and have it viewed there you have to first go and open
your ipad put your apple pencil on the magnetic strip on the top go into your find my app on your
iPad. And at the very top of the items list up there, there'll be a plus sign. And when you tap
the plus sign, you'll see you can add an Apple Pencil Pro. And as long as it's connected at the
time, that will add your Apple Pencil Pro to your Find My items. And then I, you know, it'll obviously
be in your iPads, Find My app, but I just picked up my iPhone after that. And sure enough, I confirmed
I can now see the Apple Pencil Pro in my Find My app on my iPhone.
So you apparently have to do this manually.
It doesn't automatically add your Apple Pencil Pro to your iCloud account,
which makes sense, right?
Because you don't really log in to your iCloud account with your Apple Pencil Pro.
You just kind of connect it to your iPad.
So if you want it to be in, which I think you should,
if you have an Apple Pencil Pro, add it to your Find My app.
Just make sure you do it first manually, add it manually on your iPad,
And then you'll be able to see it across your other Apple devices there and locate it if and when it gets lost.
Probably when it gets lost because it's a little bit, it's pretty easy to lose that thing.
I noticed that mine is in there.
I do not remember manually adding it, but it may be that I did it for so long ago that I don't remember.
One thing that I don't remember for Find My on the Apple Pencil Pro is if, and I've had this happen before.
I go home and I left my Apple Pencil Pro on my desk in my office and I'm sitting at my house and I want to use it.
I'm like, where is it? Where is it? And I use FindMine. I see it's at my office.
But what I don't remember is it doesn't know it's at my office just because that's the last place that it connected to my iPad.
Or is it one of those active things that like, you know, somebody else's iPhone happens to be passing close to my Apple Pencil and detect where it is the way that an AirTag works?
I think it's the former. I don't think it's the quite as smart method, but I don't know that for sure.
But regardless of how it works, I've absolutely used it before.
And for the reason I just said, you know, I leave it in one location and it's like, oh, where is it?
But at least then you know where it is because I don't have to worry about, you know, or at least you hope that that's where it is based upon the last time it was seen there.
You know, because it's like, oh, did it fall out of my briefcase?
And is it sitting on the ground somewhere, you know, in the middle of the streets of New Orleans or something like that?
So. So, yeah. So. Yeah.
Good. You know, if you add like an air tag, for example, you can ping it, you know, have make it have a sound or your iPhone can be a sound.
And now the Apple Pro does not do that here.
So to your point, it isn't quite as sophisticated as a Find My as what you might find with an AirTag or something like that.
But it's exactly what you just explained.
You just want to know a general vicinity of it so you can remember if you leave it at home or at the office or drop it on the sidewalk or something like that.
So it's good to just make sure that it's added.
If you haven't, don't remember doing it, just go in and make sure that it is added.
And I recommend doing that on your iPad first in the Find My.
And then once you add it through your iPad, then you'll be able to see it on your other devices.
Yeah, yeah, good tips.
I love the Apple Pencil Pro so much.
I use it so much for my work.
I use it so much for a million different things.
Lately, we've been going through some pictures of, you know, we're closing up my parents' house because my dad passed away recently and finding all of these old photographs that we're scanning so that people in the family can have them.
And so as I'm going through and scanning those pictures, you know, sometimes I'm going through and doing some edits to them just to sort of, you know, make the pictures look their best.
before I put them into a device to share with everybody.
And I've been using my Apple Pencil so extensively with that, with the Photomater app, just to
sort of, you know, clean up little dusts and scratches and stuff like that.
I really love my Apple Pencil.
My little tip today, since we're talking about Apple Pencil, is just, it's the hover feature.
If you have one of the newer models of an iPad, and if you have one of the newer models of
the Apple Pencil, you have this feature that in addition to actually touching your screen,
you can actually hover over the screen.
And when Apple first announced the hover device a long time ago,
One of the features of it is like before you tap on the screen, you could hover like if you're about to write with a pencil and you could change things about like the pencil tips and all that sort of stuff.
And that's true. You can use the hover feature for that.
But there's actually another part of the hover feature that I find useful.
You know, I love, as you know, so much my my Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad, which I'm holding up right now.
And when I use the trackpad on that keyboard, I love that when my cursor on my iPad hovers over certain devices, you can see certain things when you hover over it, you know, an indication that that's what you're about to press.
Or sometimes you can see controls.
If you hover over the red, yellow, and green, it gets bigger.
You can hover over menu items.
And so using that feature of the trackpad, it's really nice.
It's one of the many reasons that I'm so happy that I spent the money to buy this magic keyboard for iPad.
But sometimes I have my iPad, you know, just by the iPad.
It's not connected to it.
And therefore, I can't use that feature.
But I actually can because one of the nice things about hover is that it's hover is not just for tools.
But like I can, it's almost like in some ways having like a right click on a mouse because you can get things happen.
And just as I put my Apple Pencil, not quite touching the screen, but just hovering it over
it, I can see like little commands pop up and stuff like that.
And so it's just a reminder that even when you're just navigating, you may not be drawing.
You think Apple Pencil, it's a drawing tool.
Well, yes, it is.
But even if you're not actively drawing on your iPad, even if you're just using the interface
of the iPad, having that Apple Pencil in hand is actually pretty useful for the hover feature.
So just if it's something that you don't forget that's there, remind yourself that it's there
because it's actually useful.
I like it a lot.
I will say if you've not used it before,
it takes a little bit to get used to it.
I'm only saying that because you remember
I recently went from an M1 iPad Pro,
which does not support the feature,
to an M4 or actually I got an M5.
You have an M5, yeah.
I do, thank you.
I have an M5 now.
And I have to tell you,
I knew that the hover thing was there,
but it wasn't until I started using it,
I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
What is it doing?
Like, I'm not there yet.
Anyway, most people that have been using it on an M4 and M5 already have been used to it.
But I just say it, if you recently upgraded like I did, it just takes a little bit of getting used to.
But now I love it for all the reasons that you just mentioned about the fact that I can see where I'm going to, you know, it's a little bit more precise that I can pinpoint what I'm going to tap on.
So I love it now.
It's fun.
But it did take just a little bit of getting used to because it was a little awkward at first.
Yeah, as you say, people hold onto their iPads for a long time and older models don't support
this feature.
If you have an iPad Pro, it's got to be the M4 or the i5.
If you have the iPad Air, it's got to be the M2 or later version.
So it's only, you know, they've been around for a few years now, but I'm sure a ton of
people, a ton of people are still using iPads that are older because heck, even an M3 iPad
Pro or M2 iPad Pro are still pretty good devices.
But whenever you do upgrade, you will be able to take advantage of it as you did very recently.
Fantastic.
Well, thank you for the hover tip.
And thanks for the post.
It's good to have you back, my friend.
It's good to see the post in the news post for today.
And it'll be good to see one next week.
So we'll talk with you next week.
Thanks, Jeff.
Thanks, Brett.
Bye-bye, everybody.
