Welcome to In The News.
It's a special In The News podcast.
We decided we wanted to do a little bit of out of the ordinary recording a little bit early because we wanted to share possibly potentially 27 of our favorite iOS 27 tips so far.
Jeff,
it'd be a nice kind of a round number on there.
I'm Brett Burney from appsinlaw.com.
I'm Jeff Richardson from iPhoneJD. We happen to be in the same room together.
Yay!
We've been talking about all of the fun things that we have found in iOS and iPadOS 27.
And so this is just going to be an extravagant set of tips.
Let's start.
Go.
You first.
I'm first.
My first big one is Siri.
And we talked about it before.
But it's the idea that I keep finding things that I can't believe Siri can help me with.
Yeah.
I'm just used to the idea of, oh, Siri can't do that.
Siri can't do that.
And yet,
so many times I ask it to do something and it totally tells me,
you know, what to do.
It gives me instructions and things.
It's very helpful.
Now,
it's not all, you know, roses,
because I have noticed that for some of the more routine things,
like,
you know, hey, you know who,
turn off the lights in the study.
It used to be much faster.
And I've noticed that currently iOS 27 is a little bit slower than it was before.
Oh, really?
That's annoying.
So the very few things that Siri was really good at, it now still does them just a little bit more slowly.
But the additional things that it can do,
the questions that it can ask, are just unbelievable.
whether they're world knowledge questions or whether it's like I'm in settings and what where's
the setting for this how do I do it um it's it's just it's just incredible it's it's kind of changing
my mental pathways a little bit Jeff because to your point it's like I haven't been using it for
this so I'm going to give you a quick example the reason we're in the same room is because I'm in New
Orleans for a few days here's one of the things that I did not know if you go into the camera now
down at the bottom I usually toggle between photo and video but now there's a new Siri option
down here.
And I was like, okay, well, what do I need to use that for? Well, here's what I did.
I was at Parkway Bakery earlier today, right?
So I saw that there were little Ziploc bags full of
water hanging down from the roof. You know what this is? No.
So I didn't either.
And I'm like,
why are there several Ziploc bags full of water hanging from the roof?
So here's what I did.
I
pointed my camera at this in Siri mode. So you have to go into the Siri mode. It's a look at the
bottom you toggle and you you can hit the little Siri button at the bottom and it'll come up and
tell you it says hanging water bags are a traditional folk remedy used to deter flies
particularly outdoors the practice is based on the theory that the water reflects light
and confuses the insects compound eyes that's awesome and that's the world knowledge stuff
that's exactly just as impressed by Siri because it has access to so much information on my phone
everything in my memos everything in my notes the other day I was I have a new Apple watch right
So I was trading in my old Apple Watch at the store to get $150 for it.
And it wanted to know the serial number,
which because I had already unpaired it from my iPhone, I couldn't get it from my iPhone.
And as you may know, the way that they have serial numbers on the Apple Watches, if you take apart the band, it's actually in that little group.
But it was so hard to see.
Very hard to see,
yeah.
And so I just said,
you know, hey,
you know who, what is the serial number of my Apple Watch Series 10?
And within a second, it found some email from years and years ago.
No way.
And you know, we could see the number.
Like we took a picture of it, me and that Apple store person.
And you could zoom in.
Is that an eight or is it a V?
Yeah.
But like I had it all there, I'm like, oh, it's such and such.
And she's like, oh yeah, that's totally what it is.
So it's just like,
when it has access to all this information,
so much you can-
Oh, that's cool.
Anyway,
so my real love thing is discovering what's new
has been great.
It's gonna take a while though.
Yeah,
yeah,
so that's my tip.
Okay, your next, notes.
Okay, my next one is notes instead of brain space.
Because Siri has access to so much information
on your phone,
I've always been in the situation
where if I want to remember something later,
I just jot it down in notes.
And so that still works.
You capture it there.
But in an old way,
I would then have to go find that note,
and if it's been six months,
goodness gracious,
where is that note, what did I call it?
But now,
because you know who has access to all that stuff,
I can ask those questions like,
what is that serial number,
what is this,
what is that?
And as long as I have put it in notes at some point,
it's findable.
And so what this means for me going forward is all these little information pieces of nuggets of information,
I'm just throwing it all in notes because I'm essentially educating the AI.
Oh, and then you can search against it.
So that if I ever want to have this a month from now, a year from now, whenever,
it's going to have access to it.
So it means notes is even more valuable to me as something that I would put in my brain,
and then I don't have a photographic memory, so I would forget it.
But as long as it's in notes, all good.
Because you know you can search it later.
Not just search it, it's the idea that I can ask Siri and it will find it.
That's three so far.
You got Siri, I did Siri mode and camera, you did notes.
Number four, you still got photos.
Okay.
This is, I often will take a picture with my phone and then I want to use that picture on my iPad or on my computer.
Yes.
And I'm sitting there and waiting.
And this has been true for years.
I need to wait and wait.
When are you going to sit?
And you can't force it or you couldn't use to force it.
Right.
The trick I used to do before is sometimes
if I took like a screenshot and added another photo
to my reel,
maybe that would start working.
Yeah, yeah, I did that.
But finally,
finally Apple has solved this.
Now if you go into settings, I forget the action,
it's settings,
photos,
whatever,
there's an option that prioritize iCloud sync
for the rest of your day.
So if you turn it on at 10 o'clock in the morning,
that entire day,
whenever I take a picture with my phone
or a picture on my iPad or wherever else,
it will prioritize syncing,
which for my tests
practical purposes means within a minute a minute yeah which is all I want yeah
I want it's gonna go more quickly and I personally prefer if it had an option to
prioritize sync every single day of my life but you know I guess it's a it's a
battery issue or whatever it's a bandwidth issue but you know for the
times when it matters to me I turn it on and then I'm good to go I've got a
photos a tip as well the ratings are back Jeff I did not know this so go into
your settings app go down to the apps at the very bottom go into photos and
and wow there's a whole lot more here that i don't know that these were all just in ios 27
but if i go down to view options it's off by default but you can now turn show rating controls
on so now if i go into my photos app and i find a picture here one of the things that i can do is
that now that's a little video that i did i can tap this little drop down there's an extra little
drop down with the star there this is almost like the itunes rating of music i don't know if it's
great not for everybody it's turned off by default but if you like the ratings
aspect you can go to one to five stars and turn that so then that's another way
that you can sort of sort or organize your pictures as opposed to like just
putting it into one album or not but Apple first came out with a photos app
for the computer they had was long before yeah this was long before the iPhone it
was called iPhoto and one of the early features of iPhoto was you could do this
you could do the ratings right oh you know this is a five-star picture this is a
three-star picture and I used it for about a week and I'm like this is
ridiculous.
I'm not ready.
I will tell you, I use the favorites feature of my photos app,
but I don't use it for true blue favorites. What I use it for is if there's a picture that I'm
going to want to access like another app,
I will just favorite it.
And so then, you know, I can
then go to that app and when I want to select the picture,
instead of scrolling up and down,
I can just say, show me the favorite photo and it's right there. So I'm using favorites as sort
of like a temporary holding spot,
but I agree with you.
If you're in favor of rating your photos
and you have the time to do it,
I'm glad that you actually did it.
Now that you mentioned it, I remember even in iTunes,
I would either just do no stars or five stars
because it was just a way for me to do favorites, and I used favorites.
But I do know that some people like to do like one or two or three or four stars,
so at least that's another option there if you wanted to turn that on.
It's all by default,
but you can turn it on.
Yeah.
Well, a photos option that I really like is when you're in the Photos app,
like I'm on my photos,
at the very, you know, I have all my pictures,
and at the very bottom there's two tabs.
One's called Library and one's called Collections.
And if you click on collections,
you can change the order of this.
But right now I have memories and then pins and then albums.
But if you go all the way down,
you will find it's got utilities.
And one of the options under utilities is, well, that's actually a couple of different options.
One of the new ones is identify documents.
Oh,
yeah.
I remember this.
You find yourself looking at a document and you're like, I'm going to just take a picture.
Look at that.
And then later on,
I can hit this and it will only show things of taking documents.
Another one that is down there that you can do is identity documents.
So let's say, for example,
a long time ago,
I took a picture of my driver's license.
Oh, look at that.
My daughter's driver's license.
If you just turn that on,
it is smart enough to know this is a passport or a driver's license or something,
and it will filter down to those without you contacting them.
Another one that I like in here is called Captured by Me.
and why this one is useful is that let's you know my photos app might have things like pictures of
passports and some a screenshot that I took on my iPad or whatever there's a whole lot of things in
there that are not just regular old pictures I took if I just want to focus yeah like that photo
reel yeah I can turn on captured by me and that's just going to be the true blue pictures that I took
with my camera and stuff like that right and I'm not going to see some of the extraneous stuff that's
in there so I like some of these new options there's other ones like illustrations everything
you've taken a picture of that has someone like they drew it as an illustration you know other
things like that but it's nice to have those options I think those are cool and those are
useful I got one more photos tip here the cleanup option I'm liking the cleanup iOS 27 I think does
it even a little bit better and I did not know this but now when I go into a photo you can go
to the edit mode go into the tools it's now called tools and they have cleanup extend and reframe all
of which are cool but if you tap into cleanup of course you got to wait for it a lot of times it
has to go through and determine how we can clean it up.
But now there's a dropdown up here,
Jeff,
that you can have it on auto,
which I think most people do.
Fast, quick touch-ups, or you can select high quality,
best for detailed work.
I have found that when I do high quality,
that I can be even a little more specific
and it looks a little bit better.
Like it does a much better job
of filling in the background behind somebody.
Here's a picture, I've got my wife in the background.
I couldn't rub her out there with the clean-up tool.
And the ones that I've practiced on this,
it does a very good job of filling in the background.
Yeah, now my understanding is that the difference
between those two tools is that one of them is done on device.
And so it's a little bit faster.
And the other one goes out and uses private-
It doesn't explain that here.
It goes out to use private cloud compute,
which is still private,
but it's an outside server.
So you're gonna wait just a little bit more.
For me-- - It did take longer.
Yeah. - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
If I'm editing the photo,
I wanna edit it
so that it looks good, not just now,
but for the next 100 years.
So for me, I don't care spending an extra two seconds.
And so I'm going to probably pretty much always want to choose the better quality.
Yeah, me too.
Exactly.
But it's nice that you at least have the option.
If you just want it to be quicker.
Or I guess if you had no network access or something like that.
So I understand why Apple was afraid that it was going to be so slow that they had to give people a faster.
Yeah,
yeah.
It's fine.
But it is what it is.
I will tell you that for all these features,
so I'd like to make this my next one.
You know, using AI and features is something
that I have mixed emotions about,
right?
Because on the one hand,
if you're just cleaning up
something in the background,
that doesn't bother me terribly much,
but if you start to alter reality too much,
I start to feel like it's a deep fake or something like that.
And so one of the new features here is not only can you
do a better version of cleaning up photos,
like you described, but you can actually sort of shift
the focus of a photo so that you know,
maybe move things a little bit more than right.
It's very powerful,
it's very cool.
If you don't go too far with it,
It actually works very well.
Right.
But the creepiness level for me, I don't know.
I'm still trying to come to terms with it about whether I feel comfortable that this is taking a photo
as opposed to creating something that's inspired by real life.
Yeah, good point.
But it's the same thing.
So,
you know, I'm not opposed.
The way that Apple has done it with these two features is very restrained.
I appreciate that.
They're not doing crazy things like some other companies do,
you know,
adding people that weren't even there in the first place and stuff like that.
But it's just, I mean,
I guess you can argue it's nice to have options.
You can decide what you use.
So anyway, that's my thought.
All right, I'm going back to the camera app.
I think I'm going to step on your toes on this one too because we both, although it's a little bit different.
Let's talk about dual capture cameras now.
So when I was trying to experiment this, for some reason I thought I had in my head that I could do dual capture with a photo.
But that's not true.
So before you get, so I can go into video,
and then there's the six little dots in a square down in the bottom right.
And then you can find dual capture.
So when I do that,
now the back camera is recording whatever is in front of it.
And then I've got the face camera here recording what I've got there.
Now,
for some reason, I also thought,
Jeff, that that was two separate recordings that that would do.
But when I looked at my camera reel now,
that it still is a picture-in-picture.
It's baked in, right?
It's baked in.
It's baked in.
I would love it if I could separate those,
but I guess there's,
I used to use Filmic Pro was another app
that I used to use that could do that at the same time.
But that's just if you want to do
like a simple video recording,
but you had a little bit lower down, I think,
using this in FaceTime mode.
In FaceTime.
You do the same thing in FaceTime.
So that way it's in fact,
you know,
just earlier today, you and I were videoing with somebody.
Wouldn't it be nice if I could both see my face,
but also see what I'm showing them at the same time?
Yeah, yeah.
You know, you're at someone's house,
you're doing something on their behalf,
You know,
you want to talk to them and have them see you,
but also have them give you
some information about the world around you.
So I haven't used this yet in real life,
but I know there have been situations where I would
have loved to have had both the back and front camera flying in a FaceTime call.
So I'm looking forward to playing with that one.
Okay.
You talked about the reframe.
You talked a little bit about the extend feature,
right?
Did you just talk about that?
Yeah.
Why don't you talk about that?
One of these AI type features in the photos app that for me,
it's,
and this is just my
personal opinion it's not too creepy or too deep but you know sometimes you have a picture it's
acceptable perfect example is you have a picture in landscape but you want to print it out in a
portrait or vice versa yeah so you just can't you can't stand out i mean much like crop is the
ability to crop into an image now there's the ability to crop out of an image but in order to
go beyond the edges of the image they have to use ai to recreate yeah yeah and if it's just a picture
as it often is for me,
of like me and some family members,
you know, in my living room,
you know,
yes, the picture ends here,
but like you can very easily see that if it had gone a little bit further,
it would just be more wall,
you know, if it's a brown wall, there would be more brown wall.
And I have no trouble with the AI inventing that additional wall space or whatever,
because you're
really not changing anything of consequence.
And it gives you the ability to, like I said,
change
from portrait to landscape,
or if you just need to stretch things out a little bit, or because the
the way that you're cropping a photo or using it it just gives you more options
now the further out you go the more bizarre things look yeah you want to use
it with a little weird I think this is perfectly appropriate I have done this
from time to time for over a decade using tools like Photoshop yep to add to do
those extend features and it's really nice that it's built into photos which
is often the tool that I'm using to just you know do a quick edit to a photo and
and then maybe just, you know, print it to a printer or send it to someone or
or use it in some other circumstance where it needs to be cropped a certain way.
Right.
But it's, I like it.
Now,
I've been playing with that in the Photos app,
but, and that's great for individual photos,
but I also found it that you could go into your wallpaper and when you go into the Customize option,
tap the three little dots and there is an Extend Wallpaper option there.
That's a nice way to use it, right.
I did not know that that was there.
Now, I think it may be changing the underlying photo because this,
I have a photo that I'm using that I took as my wallpaper.
But you can see now,
when I pinch in, you can see how it goes blurry on the edges.
And if I tap extend,
of course, it's going to take a little while to go there.
But basically,
it's trying to do the exact same thing.
It's just instead of doing it on an individual photo in the Photos app, I can do it from
my customizing wallpaper aspect.
Which is nice because if there's something in your picture that you want to be right below
the time, if you normally have the time on your phone,
you might want to sort of move
things around so that things are covering up things and stuff.
So it's a perfect example that doesn't involve printing.
My examples are printing.
So I'm gonna see how well this does now.
I took this, I remember I was in North,
I think I was in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Oh, it's almost done here.
But like,
I wanna know, is it gonna do a good job
like extending that little bush over there?
And this is a little dock over there.
I don't know.
And you're right, I do move it around on there.
While you're waiting, let me-
Yeah,
go.
My next tip has to do with paste.
So many times when I have my iPhone or my iPad,
I copy something and then I'm in a text message
or I'm in an email,
or somewhere that I would enter text
and I want to paste something,
or not just text, enter anything.
And it used to be that I would have to
like find the little paste icon and tap that or whatever.
Now,
right at the top of my iPhone keyboard,
and it's on my iPad as well,
if there's something in the clipboard,
whether it's some words,
you know, just plain text,
or whether it's a picture,
or like all these other things,
there's a little icon there that shows it,
and you can just tap it and it pastes it right in there.
Oh, nice. - And so let's say,
Nice.
For example, if I'm on a website
and I wanna copy a sentence
and I wanna paste that into a text message,
I could just open up the Messages app
and right there, when I'm on my keyboard,
the Messages app,
right centered at the top of the keyboard
are those words and I just tap it and it pastes right away.
So it's nothing new because I've always been able
to copy and paste,
it's just a faster way to do it.
A faster way to do it.
Because I can tap and hold and that comes with a paste
or there was that, what is it,
three finger swipe down or something.
I mean, there's just so many different ways,
but I like that.
Here's something I just found out.
I think this morning,
combine emojis.
Did you know about that?
So if I type two different emojis,
wherever I have a blinking cursor,
and I go back to the regular letter keyboard,
I have combined.
So I have a boot and I have french fries,
Jeff.
So if I tap combine, what it's doing is,
you'll see this, it's using the gin emoji.
This is like the gin emoji feature.
Exactly, but I just like the fact that if you type,
if you type one or two, I think I only did,
I think three is the max that it'll do.
Whatever you have, if you're in an email or messages,
tap type two emojis and then there would be a little thing at the top of the keyboard that says
combine and now i have a boot that has french fries in it because it combined those two emojis
you can you never know no money you never know
why not okay this is a big one um the shorts cuts app the short oh yeah
But on the iPhone and iPad for a few years now,
it allows you to do all these sophisticated things.
And essentially it's computer programming.
It's just very simplistic computer programming.
But I have found that even though they try
to make shortcuts as easy as possible of like, you know,
use this thing and use this thing
and put things together like Lego blocks,
it can still be complicated to do anything.
Now they have added the Siri AI to shortcuts
so that when you're in the shortcuts app
and you go to create a shortcut
Yeah.
It is such a good feature that Apple has actually
made it the default way of creating a shortcut.
Wow.
As soon as you hit "Create Shortcut,"
it says,
"What do you wanna do?"
And you just describe it.
And it makes-
It literally says, "What do you want your shortcut to do?"
One of the first things that I did was when I was
in the process of upgrading to the new iPhone
and everything else,
I messed up something.
And I guess I had two different sets of shortcuts
on my iPad and iPhone.
I did not realize that.
And the ones that I lost were the ones that were on my iPhone.
Oh no.
Which is fine, I can recreate them.
but there was only a few that I had actually created by hand.
Okay.
And one of them was I've had a shortcut that I've used for years,
I think I've mentioned on the podcast before,
where I would take a picture of a receipt.
You know, you get a receipt at a restaurant or a store.
I would take a picture of it,
and what this shortcut would do was take the picture,
and then it would scan it,
and it would OCR it,
and it would name it so that the title of it was the date
in the format of like 2026-09-24 space.
And then I would be able to type as part of the shortcut.
It would say, what's the name of the place?
And I would put in there,
you know, I don't know,
Commander's Palace.
And so then it would say, then it would save a file to a specified folder in my iCloud
that I called Receipts.
And it would be named with the date,
space,
and then the title.
So that in the future, if I ever wanted to find that receipt again,
I could find it.
That was a really cool shortcut.
It had about 12 different steps.
I lost it.
And I'm like, I got to recreate the whole thing.
But you created,
you did that manually.
I did it a long time ago.
So what I did was I just literally spent 15 seconds
telling shortcuts what I wanted to do.
And it's like, do, do, do, do, do, do.
Okay,
we did it.
I'm like, seriously?
Wow.
This took, you have no idea.
This took me hours when I put it together originally
and you just made it in 15 seconds?
That's not fair.
I mean, that's too easy,
right?
And then I'm like, okay,
Mr. Smarty Pants.
Yeah.
One of the things I always wanted is like,
what if I wanted to do this?
Oh,
yeah.
I had mine that had like a list of places I would often do that I would choose from a pop-up list.
And it said, okay, here's how you do that.
Make a little pop-up list.
I'm like, well, what if I want to have like it's a new thing that's not on my list.
Like I could add it to it just by telling it.
And this is,
it's the ultimate control.
I just tell it,
here's what I want you to do.
And it goes ahead and does it.
And it's just so nice.
One other that I created that's just such a simple thing.
Have you ever had a situation where you copy something from one app or maybe from a website?
And then you go to paste it in somewhere else and you just want to paste the text
But what it's actually done is paste the formatting too and so like it's a color or it's the wrong font or it looks wrong
Yeah,
I just wanted to plain text paste
And so I made a little shortcut what I told the shortcuts up. Here's what I want you to do
It's very simple whatever I have selected copy that
Strip out the formatting and then put it on the clipboard.
That's it and it created it
Wow,
so then once it had that shortcut
I then said assign that to the share sheet and see the share sheets to know that little square
Yeah arrow and so now if I'm on a website or whatever I can just select some text and instead of doing copy
And it would I go to my share sheet the first option there is my shortcut that I created or Siri created whatever
I select it and what it takes I mean take a second it takes the text it strips the formatting and so now when I go to paste it
I know that all I'm pasting is the plain text and you know these are these silly little things these are tips
Right.
You have shortcuts valuable to you.
But the thing is, as long as you can describe what you want it to do,
it can make it.
Yeah.
Again, I'm sure there are some things it can't do.
That's the amazing part.
But the idea is that there's no learning curve.
Now just do it and try it.
And if it works, great.
If it doesn't work,
tell it what didn't work and it'll revise it and try to make it good.
But it's like now it's made it so simple that even people like me who do not have a computer
programming degree can create what is essentially like a little program just by describing it.
This might actually get me to use shortcuts.
I've always wanted to,
but I've gotta set aside some time
to learn how to do the step-by-step,
even though it wasn't that difficult before.
But I can see all these examples popping up on here.
It just says, as you said, describe a shortcut,
as if I could dictate in there,
and it will spit it out.
That's really fantastic.
So cool, okay,
you're next one.
Okay, I'm gonna go back to Siri now.
One of the things that I enjoy on my phone,
because I have so many apps, is I like doing the search.
There is a search box at the bottom of the home screen,
but I typically just take my finger
and like swipe down in the middle of the screen.
I can now customize a little bit what shows up.
Like by default, I mean, it'll come up now,
it's all integrated with Siri,
so I'm trying to get used to that a little bit too.
But I have like my most recently used apps listed there.
You can now go into the settings,
and this is under search,
I believe now,
which is now, I don't know if search was there,
I think it might've been before,
And then now before searching,
you can customize
how many apps shows up there.
Under suggest apps, you can say I only want four to show up
or eight is what I have there.
Or you can say don't suggest at all.
And then there's a couple of other toggles there.
Suggest app shortcuts and show recent searches.
So then now when I go here,
I had a recent search.
Well, I didn't have, I guess I didn't have any recent
searches in here necessarily,
but it would show up
if I had that.
So you can customize now how that search function acts
when you are at your home screen or any of the home screens on there.
I know that. That's very cool.
Find My is a useful app for finding people that are in your Find My group.
But every once in a while,
there will be somebody who I'm meeting for a meeting
or meeting for dinner,
and I'm like, I'm running late.
And I want to just say, you know, I'm going to let you track me
for at least a short period of time.
I don't do it very often, but when I do do it, it's totally useful.
Yeah.
Because then they can see exactly where you are.
It used to be that you had very limited options.
You could share it for like an hour or a day or whatever.
Right,
right, right.
features is you can now choose a custom option that will bring up a date and time picker so that
you can share your location for an exact amount of time or to a specific date and time.
Oh, I like that.
A little bit more control over the feature.
I like that.
Let's go to messages.
Why don't you start with the messages one?
You got a good one.
I'm so happy when they hit me. Have you ever been in your messages app and I'm tapping like in the
messages app and somehow I tap a button right there and next thing you know it's recording an
an audio message.
Yeah, I hate that.
You know how many times I wanna send someone
an audio message?
Zero.
There are never,
never times when I want to send
an audio message.
I think I just saw what you're gonna, yeah.
And so that it will never be there ever again
in your life.
You go to settings,
messages,
show in text field.
It's an audio messages button.
Yeah,
yeah.
You show in text field and one of the things
you can show there is do you wanna show
that little audio message thing?
No,
you hit none and then you will never again
have a button that you will accidentally tap
which recordeds an audio.
Ooh, I like that.
Not only for me,
but like-
I do like that.
I would sometimes get a message from my dad
or even my mom way back when
that they sent me an audio message
completely unintentionally.
That's a butt message.
Is that what that's called?
It's basically a butt message.
A butt message,
yeah.
A butt filing message.
So turn it off,
that's what I said.
Now,
here maybe is a bonus.
I have not done that.
I have not turned it off.
But here's the little audio thing on the side.
If I tap that,
look what it says now.
Tap and hold to record and sync audio.
You make it a little bit harder.
So you're right, instead of me just tapping it,
now I have to tap and hold, which I kinda like that,
but I can see that some people, I know, I like that.
Here's another thing in Messages you can do now.
If you hit the little plus symbol to the left of it,
this is where you can come up with the photos,
or camera,
or the little GIF images.
Well, now in new,
in iOS 27,
you can do a drawing.
I did not know that they were really doing that,
and frankly, I don't know if this is really helpful,
so I can just say help here.
I'm gonna text this to you.
It now sends it as a drawing.
You're welcome.
Now,
the other thing, if you remember,
I did this as an in the no tip not too long ago.
That drawing may show up down along in the list,
but if you tap and hold in that drawing,
you can rearrange that list
when you hit the little plus symbol
to the left of the messages.
So if you wanted that drawing, if you liked the drawing,
Jeff's looking it up right now,
you can now tap and hold in that plus symbol list
and you can move it around, drag them up and down.
That's a long message.
Thank you.
I will cherish it forever.
My next one is called One Tap Suggestions Based on Comment.
For certain messages that you receive a message from somebody,
if you look right underneath
it you will see a little option with things to do with that information such as add to
reminders,
add to notes.
I haven't yet played with it enough to figure out when it actually happens and when it does
happen but I have seen it once or twice.
So it looks like they're trying to do something that's a little bit more context-aware and
help you out.
So I'm in favor of it.
All right, I'm going to switch to AirPods now.
And I've got one here and I got one at the very end, but I think I'm going to move it
up here.
When your AirPods,
or when I used to say, when my AirPods Pro are connected to my iPhone,
you know, you can go into the settings and it'll show up there at the top because once
it's connected, I don't have them connected right now,
so we can't see that.
But two things, we talked about this, I remember before,
there is now an equalizer that you
You can go in and manually switch on there.
By default, I think it's on auto,
and so when you're listening to music,
it'll just automatically
adjust the equalizer on there.
But for those of you audiophiles that might want to do something a little bit different,
you can go in now and change that equalizer and manually adjust that.
The other thing that I found by accident that I kind of like is we've talked about the AirPods
Pro.
You basically have, well, you have really four different options that you can switch from.
It could be off.
You can go into transparency mode, which means that then at that point you can hear what's
around you.
You can go into adaptive mode so that it'll raise or lower the noise cancellation depending
on your environment, or you can go into noise cancellation mode, right?
Now if you go into adaptive mode now, you can adjust how much noise cancellation comes
through on there.
Now I like you leaving it at the default,
but you can go in now when you go into adaptive
you can say well I want more transparency or you can say you want more noise cancellation.
I've always liked it as the default but some people might like to have that little general
adjustment there.
That's cool.
One other new feature on iOS 27 I like is we've all had a situation before
where you're at your house and you're on Wi-Fi and you leave to get in your car and you get to
a point where you're close enough to your house that your phone still wants to use the Wi-Fi.
Yeah.
The signal is so horrible that you're not getting a good connection and the end result is you have
have no internet connection or no phone or whatever.
It's horrible.
They've now done a better job of sensing that when you start to move away from that Wi-Fi
to switch over to cellular much more quickly so that you no longer are going to have, or
at least far fewer times,
you're going to find yourself in that no man's land between the
Wi-Fi signal that's so weak it's barely useful but it's there enough to be taking over.
They will switch you over more quickly to cellular.
I've totally seen this myself.
I was going to say,
I feel like it's worked better.
I mean,
even if you just give yourself an extra second or two, that sounds minor.
but that's a second or two that was annoying before,
and now it's not.
I can't say that I'm sitting there watching it,
but I just generally feel over this last week or so
that,
yeah, it seems that there would be times
when I'd be driving out of my driveway
that it would like Spotify would pause or something
because it couldn't get it,
but then it would pick up once it got onto the cellular.
But yeah, I find that it's a little bit better now.
Why don't you do one more?
Weather,
I'm gonna do one more, and then you,
well,
we can do a couple more in here.
In the weather app,
quickly, I like this,
at the very top of the conditions,
you now have three little buttons here.
You can switch between conditions,
there's a little rain drop,
you can check the levels of precipitation,
or the third one is wind, wind speed.
And I kinda like that.
That's a new thing that they just introduced
in iOS 27 there.
Yeah, I'll give you one last one.
I haven't tried it yet, but I am intrigued by it.
For my iPad,
for a long time,
I've moved away from like the home pad,
the home of my iPad doesn't have apps on it.
It has like-- - Yeah, I like,
I remember when you did this.
It makes it like a control panel.
Very nice.
And there's now an even bigger widget,
that's the extra large widget.
And so you can have a widget that, for example,
on your iPhone,
is basically the entire screen.
Cover the whole screen.
I have already seen some app developers
have started to make apps that are basic,
I mean,
it's basically running as an app.
Yeah.
Things you can do in a widget that are like-
A full screen app, yeah.
But it's basically a full screen app
that lives on your screen.
And so I haven't picked out one for me yet,
but I know that there is gonna be something that I use
that'd be so useful that, you know,
I don't have a ton of home screens on my phone,
but I'm gonna select one of these apps,
use the new extra large widget,
and for all intents and purposes,
instead of opening up the app,
you just swipe over and the things that you need
are right there.
Maybe it'll be like a weather app that shows you-
Yeah,
that's what I was looking for,
was a weather app here.
Or something like that, or like a reminders app,
or if you have a whole bunch of shortcuts.
But I like having the option that if I wanna have
a super big widget that would take up
most of my iPhone screen,
I have that.
I haven't used it yet,
but it's on tap for like, I will want to explore this.
Look at that.
And look what you got there.
That's a really big weather app.
I get that big honking weather.
For all intents and purposes,
you don't need to open up the weather app
because everything you would possibly want is right there.
Yeah,
but it's like,
I do want to know a little bit, but you're right.
But it's like, then I'd have to swipe to the page.
Yeah,
and that's a decision.
Do you want to just swipe over to get there?
That is a big honking widget right there.
That's the official win.
All right, I think that's enough.
We've gone over 27,
I think,
with all the bonus and everything.
But man, I just,
I've enjoyed just learning a little bit more at, you know,
stumbling
upon new little things.
Cause we, we've known this for a while.
These are just the tiny little edits and improvements that they've been making.
And it's been a lot of fun.
It has been.
And we're going to be finding even more of these over time, which is so fun to explore
them.
I'm like, have you seen this before?
It's really, really cool.
We'll keep finding them and we'll keep talking about them, Jeff.
Thanks.
And we'll talk with you next week.
Thanks, Brett.
Bye-bye everybody.
