Welcome to In the News for October the 16th, 2026.
I am Brett Burney from appsinlaw.com.
And this is Jeff Richardson from iPhoneJD.
Hey, Brett.
Good morning,
Jeff.
Wow, what a week.
I mean,
what a month.
In fact, reading some of your posts today,
what a year.
Like,
who in the world knew that Apple was going to be doing so much in this year?
Speaking of which,
I have to ask you right off the bat.
But this morning,
the pre-orders opened up for the iPhone Duo.
How many did you order this morning,
Jeff?
So here's the thing.
I don't need an iPhone Duo because I have an iPhone,
and I like my brand new iPhone.
But I'm just curious about it.
I'm curious about it.
So I went back and forth and back and forth.
And ultimately,
I decided, you know what?
I'm going to do a pre-order this week.
I got it all set up and stuff like that.
And so this morning at 7 o'clock Central,
I could click the button to order.
Because I figured,
I mean, look, the chance of me actually keeping this,
it would have
to be really special for me to justify having two iPhones.
And I don't think that that's going to be the case.
But Apple's got a very generous return policy.
And, you know, it reminds me, you know, way back when I was trying to decide what to do
with the new Apple Watch, I ended up getting an Apple Watch Ultra,
which I know that you
use.
And I thoroughly enjoyed trying out an Apple Watch Ultra.
I totally get why people want it.
But I did it.
I also decided it was just too big for me.
But I would not have known that without trying it.
And so I decided, you know, let me go ahead and do a pre-order today because they'll ship,
you know, a week from today on Friday.
Well,
let's just say I was not the only person hitting that pre-order button because when I hit the button,
it's like,
great, you know, you pre-ordered it within the first 30 seconds.
Yeah, you can build it right here.
And you will be getting yours in mid-November.
I'm like, goodness gracious.
So there were clearly,
you know,
my two cents is that there was probably a lot of pent-up demand.
people were ready to go and they were closer to the Apple server.
So now I will say this,
I have had times in the past where I have ordered something from the Apple store and it has said,
you know,
your ship date's going to be in three weeks.
And then a couple of days later,
I get an updated email that says, oh, actually,
no, yours will be ready on the day that we ship.
So who knows?
Maybe that's what's going on.
But I just, I mean, I just got this sense.
I know that
the things that I read online are the tech nerds,
you know, like me.
And so within that little very
limited universe,
of course,
there's going to be a lot of enthusiasm for a brand new product.
Sure.
I do not know if the general public at large is really excited about this as a new factor.
I don't know.
But or so.
So I mean, it could be a demand issue or it could be a supply issue. I
mean, maybe Apple,
this is a very complicated design.
Maybe they've only made like two of them
or something like that.
I have no idea.
So we'll see.
But I just, I thought it was curious.
It's just anecdotal.
But just one little data point
is that even for someone like me
that clicked the order button
within seconds of the orders going online,
it told me it was going to come late.
So we'll see.
I mean, I'll get it.
I mean, if it gets to be really delayed,
maybe I'll end up on checking.
I went out the Apple store
and decide it's not for me
and maybe I'll cancel my order.
Well, that's been my plan.
I will decide.
But I'm just intrigued
because it's something new.
And we've never seen a device
like this from Apple before.
So I'm curious about it.
And we have seen so many people review it and, you know, a lot of hands on that people, you
know, that were in Cupertino.
I mean,
Apple has done a very good job, I feel,
of giving it to people that would talk
about it to the point where I can see that there is some bent up interest in this.
But I guess maybe I'm just too conservative,
Jeff.
I like I got to hold it myself.
I got to feel that hinge multiple times over and over and over and over and over and over.
I got to feel it myself just to have some kind of a confidence level.
before I have the wherewithal to actually place an order.
Okay, so you didn't get one.
You did not pre-order one.
I did actually.
No, I clicked it.
Oh, you did?
Okay.
Yeah, I did.
I mean, we'll see.
I may cancel it.
I mean, we'll see.
But as of right now, they've got my Apple card.
They put an order in.
I'll get it sometime in the next 10 years.
We'll see.
I'm running through this.
You got a black one,
I guess.
Did you get a terabyte of storage?
I got the black one.
No, I just got the lowest one, the 256.
Oh, the 256.
Okay.
Let's see what this is.
Because if I were to keep it, it would be a secondary device.
So I wouldn't keep it.
No trade in.
Yeah.
I'm going to say I buy it.
The 256 starts at $19.99.
I think I would probably go with at least $5.12.
But I'll keep it with AT&T.
I'm going to select no AppleCare right now.
And let's see.
Look at that.
If I did this today.
Now, I'm in Chicago right now.
So maybe it's showing a different date.
But right now, if I placed an order, Jeff,
it would be Monday,
January 25th.
Oh, my.
When I would get it.
That's three months away from today.
Wow.
Four months.
I mean,
that's insane.
OK,
that's crazy.
I'm glad you got it in.
Yeah, maybe they will update these in the future.
And maybe,
you know, that's but a gosh.
I mean, if your idea I mean, today is day one of pre-orders.
And if your idea was, let me get this as a Christmas present for somebody.
guess what?
It's not going to be there for purchase.
You know,
sometimes I play with this because if I try to do a one terabyte or a two terabyte,
even there's not as many people may be ordering that because the two terabyte is $3,199, $3,199.
But nope, look at that.
Same date,
same delivery.
And they say pickup.
You can check back for pickup availability on October 24th
because even though we pre-order today,
it doesn't start getting shipped until the 23rd, right?
So that's a week from today.
and we've known in the past Apple does reserve some inventory to where you could probably maybe
possibly potentially pick it up in person if you order it I've done that in the past and it's
always been nice but get in line early I mean it's there's theoretically possibility that if
you camp out at your local Apple store they may have a few for people that are camping out in line
early.
So, um,
okay.
Any other normal year,
Jeff,
I think we would continue just to keep on talking about the iPhone duo because
that's probably one of the most exciting products that Apple has announced.
Um, because it's a new phone,
it's a, it's a flip phone,
which is just a little crazy,
a foldable phone,
but no,
this week was a huge announcement from Apple.
You did an excellent job covering everything that Apple announced on October
13th, right? That was Tuesday.
Now this was sort of a closed presentation,
right? For journalists
and stuff. It wasn't a big,
you know, who all announcement,
although it was well known and a lot
of people were covering it. And a lot of people have written about it as you have have a ton of
links in your post today,
but you did an excellent job covering everything that Apple announced on
Tuesday.
Why don't we just do a quick overview and then we'll dig into maybe some of these products
a little bit more.
Yeah.
So big, big picture is three,
you know,
three products and then,
and then, and then an additional thing,
the three products for the Apple home,
you know,
the Apple home view,
a new version of the home pod mini,
a new version of the Apple TV hardware
device.
And then finally Apple's announcement that it has this Apple home collection,
which is
basically Apple,
Apple giving its, you know, good housekeeping seal of approval to products made by
third parties for now,
just two of them,
but could be more too.
But I mean, but I mean,
just from that big picture,
that 10,000 foot,
I mean,
that's a whole lot of announcements
for the home.
And so very exciting.
Yeah.
Okay.
So then let's start with probably the biggest
item that has gotten the most attention,
not the least of which from you and I,
I've been reading about this, but everybody has been talking about the Apple home view.
Now, I will say you and I have actually been talking about this product for at least a couple of years,
at least from the speculation standpoint,
right?
Is that we've always been talking about the idea that if what if you could combine a HomePod with maybe an iPad for having a screen?
And really,
that's what they've given us.
Although I think they did it a little bit better than maybe some of what we were speculating.
But that is a brand new product now from Apple called the HomeView.
Yeah.
This whole category of having like a little device that sits in your kitchen and your living room or something like that,
that can show you things and interact with you. I mean,
it's been around for a long time. There's been an interest of a long time.
I think I mentioned in either my post on Tuesday, I made my post today.
You know, I remember back in like the year in 2000,
when I was a big user of devices and was then purchased by a company called us robotics.
Then us robotics was purchased by a company called three com.
And when three com was making the palm,
they came up with a company called three com.
this device called the Audrey.
And it wasn't the only one at the time, Brett,
this was like the
early days of the internet.
People were talking,
they were calling these like internet appliances
and stuff like that. But the idea is that you would just have something that would maybe sit
in your kitchen and it would have, you know, your calendar, your recipes,
your stuff like that.
And again, this device did not,
you know, that entire category of internet appliances went away
because people like, we'll just use a computer instead.
But like the idea of having this device
has been around for a long time. And then of course,
you know, the Amazon echoes and we came
out before the, you know, HomePods and then, you know, the Echo shows and Google has its things.
So Amazon products,
people have been buying these devices for a while.
But one of the things I keep
hearing about a lot of these products is,
you know,
they sort of suck in part because companies like
Amazon will never give up an opportunity to put ads on things.
And people are like, I don't want
ads on something in my kitchen. I don't want ads on my, on my refrigerator.
I don't want ads on my
oven.
And so that's been one of the downsides about these products.
And so Apple,
you know,
whenever Apple comes into a category,
you know that they're going to do it a clean,
refined way
that's not going to be obnoxious. So right off the bat, Apple has that one advantage.
But what they've done with the HomeU,
I mean, it's actually sort of cute,
right?
Because it's
a little bitty device.
It's a little screen. It would sit there and it can, I mean, we could talk
about all the different things, but like the idea is it would be just sort of like a central place
to like provide you with information
about what's going on in your home.
If you have smart home devices,
it's a nice thing to control your temperature,
to turn on lights and fans and all that sort of stuff.
But you can use it for all sorts of different things.
I mean, you can use it for your calendar,
you can use it for doing recipes
and it's got some really nice ways of dealing with that.
It's just like a nice little cool device
that's just there and you can use it
and other members of your family can use it.
We'll get into details in this for a second.
But it's just a cute little device.
And so,
you know, I'll be curious to see,
I know that there's an interest in this category because like I just said, people have been
making things like this for 25 years now.
But so there's obviously some interest in it.
I just don't know how popular it's going to be because the knock on it, and I put this
in my first paragraph today,
is, you know,
truly everything that you could do on this
home view,
you could already do just by looking at your iPhone.
Now, your iPhone screen is not as big as the home view screen.
But on the other hand, if you wanted a really big screen, you could just take it on
iPad and stuff like that.
So it's not like it does something new,
but then again,
you could say the
same thing about the Apple watch, right? I mean, the Apple watch came out, gosh, 2010,
a long time
ago.
And like everything on your Apple watch,
your, your, your,
you know,
your calendar and
your notifications,
stuff like that. The iPhone does all of that too.
And yet we have learned that
just having something that you can glance at on your wrist or having it tap you is,
is a real,
you know,
that's really nice. I mean, it's so nice that I love my Apple watch and I wear it every day.
And I know a lot of people do as well.
And the same thing is true.
If you're in your car,
you know, there are lots of ways that you could play your music
and play your podcast in your car by hooking up to the Bluetooth.
But having CarPlay is just nicer.
It's just nicer to have that dedicated screen in your car.
And so I think the HomeView is the same way.
It's just a nicer way for some people to display information.
I think the people that's going to be most popular for,
and by the way, I'm not in this
category are people that,
you know,
many homes have like a kitchen that has like an island and
people sit there and,
you know, people always say that, you know,
everybody seems to congregate in
the kitchen.
And if you have a kitchen like that,
then I think,
and of course that Apple,
the video
that Apple released this week showed that,
you know,
we'll get to that. I think that that is a
really good use case for it.
My house,
you've been to my house before,
Brad, I have a very old house
that was built in the 1850s.
At the time that my house was built,
the kitchen was a separate
building because you know that was back in the days when kitchens would catch on fire so you'd
make it like a back part of the house you know be a separate you know place so in my house the
kitchen years and years ago was retrofitted into like what used to be a long interior hallway
so we have a very like a galley style kitchen a very long one but and yet even in my house even
though we don't have like an island or anything like that people are always congregating in the
kitchen it's just the nature of things so um so i'm i'm i mean i to to not to bury the lead i did
go ahead and order one. Did you order one? Are you curious?
Not I was interested to hear.
No, I did. And I'm curious to see,
like, I don't know. It's,
it's not that expensive at $300
because,
you know,
I, I frankly thought it would have cost a lot more money than that. I was
surprised it was that expensive.
And, and we'll, we'll talk more about the price too. Cause there's
some curious things in the price.
I'm just curious to try it out and we'll see.
We had in my house,
we had been talking, my wife and I for a while about maybe putting a HomePod mini in the kitchen
because it just might be nice.
And, you know, if times I want to listen to music
or if I'm by myself,
listen to a podcast,
something like that.
I mean, I can currently do that,
you know,
just with my AirPods or something,
but I thought it might be nice to have a HomePod.
So I've been talking about that for a while.
And in fact, there's been times where I take,
like we would have an extra HomePod mini in the house.
And sometimes I'd just be doing a lot in the kitchen.
I would just plug it into the kitchen
and just have it there,
you know, for the day.
So I've tried it before and it is nice.
And so this would be a HomePod mini,
but then it also has the screen
and all the different features that come along with it.
So I'm I'm I'm giving I'm going to give it a shot.
And I think it might be something that I will enjoy having.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I had no doubt that you were going to order one because you have been so good at using those HomePods and the HomePod minis in your house.
And you've talked about them so often.
And I believe for someone like you,
this is absolutely sort of that next step.
And,
you know, I've never had a HomePod.
I've never had an Echo or,
you know, Amazon or anything of those devices.
I've just never really kind of gotten into that too much because again,
to your earlier point,
anytime that I have a question or I want to ask something or pull up a recipe,
we just use our phones or I use my iPad.
And I just utilize that.
And all of us have our own devices in my family.
And so we just all use that.
And we've got a couple of stands like my wife has a stand in the kitchen where she puts her iPad,
you know, and she I think is one that even has sort of like a clear front on it.
So it's like, you know, no splatters or anything good on it.
I mean,
she loves that because it has all of that interactivity.
To your earlier point,
I thought when I was trying to picture this or understand sort of where it fit, I thought this story from The Verge,
Jennifer Patterson,
did an excellent job of sort of putting this into context because in her story,
she puts she has a picture where I had to do something like this for a long time.
This is an iPad mini that she puts into her story that she says, my iPad in the wall experiment lasted several unsuccessful years.
In other words,
we've already been thinking about something like this, right?
I mean, a lot of us on the techie side, it's like, well, what if we just had like one panel that,
you know, it's an iPad that everybody could use because that's nothing new.
We've had iPads in the family that we kind of tossed around.
But what if we could control maybe like,
you know, Apple Music playing onto a Bluetooth speaker that everybody can have access to?
We don't need that now because,
frankly, we just all get onto the same jam or,
you know,
music share on our iPhones.
But it's this idea that's been around.
And I thought that Jennifer did such a great job of kind of putting that into context because now you can see she's got this picture of her iPad mini on the wall.
But in the same,
and I know we're going to get to this, you can also wall mount the home view as opposed to putting it on this cute little pedestal aspect that it has here.
Okay, let's talk about that for a second.
Yeah,
go ahead.
You know,
it's interesting that there's really two different ways to use this device.
You can use, you know, it's a screen.
And most of the, it sounds like most of the brain and the speakers are built into the little square screen, right?
Right.
It's like an iPad.
It's like a square iPad.
Yeah,
seven inch diameter. So it's not it's not even six inches by six inches.
So, I mean, it's shorter. I mean, I don't know what my iPhone is, but it's shorter than that. So it's a cute little small little square screen.
But the base on it is really just like a subwoofer and some other speakers just to add to the audio experience.
So if you use sensors too,
right.
It's like,
and some,
this temperature and humidity sensors,
I don't know if that's in, I think that's built into the screen. Okay.
Okay.
So,
um,
but the base,
even though the base is a big part of it for holding it up,
um,
I think it's just making the
speaker better,
but you can also purchase a version of it without the base,
which has all the features,
except that maybe it doesn't have as much of the,
you know, like the subwoofer. So it's not gonna
have that.
Right.
Um,
and then you can have it mounted on your wall because people for years
have had these high-end smart home systems
or do-it-yourself things,
like what this author was talking about doing,
where you put an iPad on the wall,
of it just makes sense to have something in your wall.
I mean, we're used to having thermostats
on the wall already,
right?
And so this could be just like a thermostat on the wall,
but so much more.
It could control everything else.
You could see everything else with it.
But again, if you're gonna put it on your wall,
that's not as much of a everybody gathers around
the device thing,
but it would be useful.
It's a totally different use case,
but it's equally useful for that.
And so I just think it's interesting
that Apple realized it could be one or the other.
It could either be something on a table
or a bedside or an office desk or something like that,
or it could be something on the wall.
Now,
the pricing is curious
because I just said that I was surprised it was only $299.
I mean, we're going to get to the Apple TV,
but like the Apple TV is also $299
and it doesn't have nice speakers for sound.
It doesn't have a screen.
It doesn't have everything else.
Probably both of these things,
both between a nine.
It sounds,
Apple traditionally does not really subsidize its prices,
but gosh, Brett, I just
have the feeling that they are subsidizing the price on this to hit that 299 price point.
And evidence of that is the version of it that goes on your wall,
which is basically,
it's not more,
it's actually less.
Cause it's like,
take away that entire base and how much less would it cost without the
base?
The answer is none less.
It's exactly the same price.
So you're paying the 299,
whether you get it with or without the base, which is really
curious.
And in fact,
you're arguably paying more because if you want to put it on your wall,
I mean, you could do like a little do-it-yourself solution to get it hooked up into your wall.
But what Apple suggests is getting one of their little brackets that holds it on the wall to provide power.
Either they have a cord running down your wall,
which is like not as pretty,
or you can have like an electrician or somebody install it so that there's a cord behind the wall.
In fact, it could either be a power cord behind the wall, or what's actually interesting is it could also use power over Ethernet, which is interesting because if you have your home, a lot of people will have their home wired with Ethernet in all the different rooms.
Correct.
If you have that,
the Ethernet could plug into this from behind the wall.
Not only does that give it the power,
but it could also provide it a network connection.
You don't have to worry about Wi-Fi or anything like that.
Right.
Perfect connection.
But all of those cost more.
In fact, if you get the little mounting thing for power over Ethernet, it's like, I forget how much more it is, like $150 more or something like that.
Although for people that are already spending money on professional installers and everything else,
I mean, you're already used to spending big bucks.
So the pricing is interesting.
And again, I think it's because Apple's trying to subsidize it a little bit.
But putting aside the pricing situation,
it's just interesting that you have two very different form factors.
You know,
something built into a wall is very different from something that's on the table that you could sort of move around and back and forth and everything else.
So so that that's interesting.
Now,
I thought that there were some things I'm sorry, I'm going right back to the price here,
but we need to move on.
But if you get the home view,
so I'm looking at the preorder page here because I did not preorder one,
but you must have gotten I'm going to guess you got the one with the base on it.
You did not get the home,
the wall mount.
correct but if so the home view with the base and the home view wall mounted are the exact same
price first of all i thought that the wall mounted would be a little bit less i don't know you would
think but no and then no because aren't they charging for some additional things if you like
i guess if you get well if you get the if you get the version that goes on your wall
yeah you have the option of perching some of their mounting oh look at this and those cost more now
again,
you don't have to buy it.
I mean, if you just want to do something in your house,
much like the article you were showing,
you know, Jennifer,
whatever it was, she figured out a way
to mount an iPad.
I mean, if you want to put it yourself,
you know, feel free to do so.
But if you
want to have Apple's recommended solution for mounting it, those are extra charges.
Those are the extra charges. But it is hard to juxtapose,
you know, the screen without a base
and the screen with the base costs exactly the same. I mean, does that mean the base is free?
That really is odd.
And so,
but,
you know, at the same time,
anyone that's in,
if you're in the mood that I'm going
to be mounting this to a wall,
you know,
you're probably the type of person that's going to be
spending premium money on like built-in smart home stuff,
getting professional installers.
You're probably in a different,
you know, tax bracket as it were.
And so I guess Apple's like, you know, you're going to pay more or at least you're not going
to get a discount.
So,
but those of us that are just getting the regular unit that sits on a table,
you know,
we're getting it for $299.
Okay.
Now I want to go to this Julie Clover article here in just a moment,
but first I want to,
so I'm looking at the screen here that Apple has when you do the preorder on
the home view.
And I wanted to ask you,
Jeff,
right here,
it's showing like here,
you can do your door lock.
You can do your lights.
You can do your fan.
Do you think you are going to use this mostly with the Apple home app or the
home kit app on there?
Like,
do you envision that you'll be using it for a lot of those kinds of things
turning things off and on,
or is really the bigger story here is the fact that you can walk up to it
and play your music selections,
right? Your wife can then walk up and maybe change something or ask
for her calendar kind of a thing.
Like, do you see this as sort of,
well, I just want to hear like,
what do you think this,
how this is going to work in your household from that?
That is an excellent question.
That is an excellent question.
And I do not know the answer.
And again,
we've been here before,
Brett,
because I remember to go back to 2010,
when that first
Apple Watch came out,
we knew it sounded interesting,
but not only did us as customers not really know
it. To tell you the truth,
I think Apple,
when I think, I think that when Apple released the Apple
Watch,
it did not yet know why it would be.
And a telling point of that is nowadays,
if you look
at ads for the Apple Watch,
one of the number one things they talk about is health,
right? Because
you can use it for workouts,
it monitors your heartbeat, all these other things.
But if you go
back in time,
when the original Apple Watch was introduced,
they mentioned some
of that, but it was not at all the emphasis because I honestly think that Apple did not know
what people were going to be using it for.
And likewise,
when,
you know, famously,
when the
Apple Watch first came out,
Apple had this feature that you could like draw with your finger little
pictures on an Apple Watch and you would send those pictures to someone else.
And they put a
lot of emphasis on that in their announcement video as if that was going to be a big part of
it and nowadays nobody ever does that in fact i'm not even sure if it can do that and so right i feel
the same way about the home view people again it's not like it's unlike the apple watch where we
really hadn't had something like that people have had amazon echo shows and those people have had
these types of places in the years so to the extent to one extent we do know you know people
do have a history with these but i really don't know and it's going to be different for everybody
for some people this will be primarily a way to control your lights and your fans for some people
it's going to be primarily a way to see your security cameras because what a nice screen,
what a beautiful screen to see multiple security cameras at once.
You know, if you hear something
outside,
you know, I just heard something outside my house, take a quick look at this and see what's
going on.
A screen that's much nicer than your, you know, much bigger, at least than your, your,
your iPhone screen.
You don't even have to take your iPhone out of your pocket. It's just right
there. I mean, you could just look at it.
The doorbell rings.
I presume it's going to automatically,
you know,
show who's at the doorbell on the screen without you having to do anything else,
assuming that you have a smart doorbell.
And so for some people,
that's going to be big.
For me,
I was sort of thinking it more as a media thing,
like more like a HomePod,
something to listen to music and podcasts
and stuff like that.
But I don't know.
And yet at the same time,
you know,
when I,
do you have a television in your kitchen at your house?
No.
Okay.
I don't either.
But I know that like when I was growing up,
my parents used to have that.
And like,
they would sometimes be playing like,
you know,
cooking shows that they would sort of half watch it
or the morning.
Like they would have the morning news on in the kitchen.
And I remember when we moved into our house,
gosh, way back when, late 90s,
in my kitchen,
the previous owner had actually installed like a little shelf up at the top so that like
if you would look up, you would see a TV up there.
I never used it in a long sense removed that shelf.
But like the idea of having something to display video,
not that you're sitting down and actively
watching it, but just to have something to listen to in the background.
A lot of people enjoy that.
And this device can do it, you know, right?
It's going to have the ability to show video on it.
Now,
as a caveat,
the way that it does it is interesting.
In fact, can we go on this little tangent for a little bit?
How does it display video?
It doesn't have built in the ability to stream from Apple TV or the news or anything else
like that.
But what it does is your iPhone can share video to the screen.
And so as long as your iPhone is in your house,
it can actually show video.
And to go back a couple of months with WWDC this summer,
WWDC,
Apple announced that a
new feature coming to CarPlay was that you could watch a video on a CarPlay screen.
And we're like, well, why?
In park.
You can't do that while you're driving, obviously, only in park.
And literally not that long ago, after I upgraded to iOS 27,
I was sitting there and I was parked
and I'm like, well, I'm not going to sit here and watch a video.
But just out of curiosity,
I'm just going to see if this feature works for me.
And so I tried to do it and I started playing something from Apple TV.
and the sound came through my CarPlay,
but not the video.
I'm like, I wonder what's going on.
And then I researched it and I realized, oh, no, no.
iOS 27 supports the feature,
but it only works if you have a car
that also supports CarPlay video.
And do you know how many cars
currently support CarPlay video?
I'm gonna guess two.
I think the answer is actually zero.
As far as I know,
I'm not even sure that anybody does.
And so the irony is Apple introduced this technology
a couple months ago.
And what none of us knew
is what Apple was actually previewing
is video on the HomeView.
We just didn't know that the HomeView existed at the time
because HomeView literally uses CarPlay technology.
If you have an app that shows something on CarPlay,
that app,
as I understand it,
automatically will show things on the HomeView as well.
So I think, for example,
like the app that I use for my podcast,
which is the Overcast app,
the Overcast app works with CarPlay.
And so I think by definition,
it's going to work with the home view.
Likewise, the lit software app
that so many attorneys use so much,
TranscriptPad.
TranscriptPad has a mode
that works in the car on CarPlay.
Absolutely.
My guess is that day one,
I will be able to play audio transcripts
on my home view screen.
I mean, it's just interesting
because it's an interesting way to do it.
Yeah, so I mean, they're calling it,
you know, the CarPlay technology
is now,
maybe they should change the name.
It's CarPlay slash HomeView.
It's just sort of interesting.
So there's all these interesting things to figure out the details of.
So back to my example, some people will be using the HomeView as a way to just have videos playing in the background.
Maybe you're just listening to old episodes of The Office or Friends or something like that just while you're doing stuff while you're working in the kitchen.
So I think a million people are going to have a million different use cases here.
And we'll have to check back in in six months,
a year, how am I,
Jeff Richardson,
using the HomeView?
Or am I using it at all?
Maybe I decide I don't use it.
And other people are going to be using it in different ways,
just like people use Apple
watches and CarPlay and things like that.
Great point.
I'm really,
really curious to see.
But again, I'm excited that Apple is trying something new.
And let's just see if it sticks and whether people like it or not.
It's interesting you mentioned CarPlay because I've heard a lot of people reference the same
things that you just are,
or maybe sort of how the home view is going to work in conjunction
with your iPhone.
because, you know, CarPlay really is with the iPhone.
So I've heard people talk about that.
I've also seen a lot of people mention this,
Jeff,
that the Apple Home View is like a giant Apple Watch for the home.
And I think mostly they're talking about like the size of the screen,
as it were.
And also it's on the screen too,
right?
Because if you display a clock with a picture behind it,
I mean, that's what an Apple Watch does,
right?
That's what an Apple Watch does,
right.
And if you display like simple widgets with like your upcoming calendar,
that's what my Apple Watch does.
And so,
plus my Apple Watch, I know that my Apple Watch does have its own app store and
stuff like that.
But like an Apple Watch,
I mean, in theory,
you could use an Apple Watch independently.
But like,
look, we all know that the Apple Watch is an accessory to an iPhone,
right?
It's an ancillary device to the iPhone.
And again, the HomeView is the same way.
The HomeView has a lot of built-in apps.
But in some ways, it's going to be particularly valuable when it's paired to your iPhone,
because
then you can see your personal calendar,
your personal messages,
your personal pictures,
et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
now okay i'm gonna ask a silly question i think i know the answer can you take the screen off of
the base my understanding is no yeah i think you're correct yeah you either buy the version
that doesn't have a base or you buy the version that does have a base and that's the version you
have no what i'm getting to though is it looks so cute when you see this and i'm thinking of
holding an iPad or an iPad mini.
Like I,
I guess in my mind,
in a crazy way,
I thought,
wouldn't this be cool if this was like a magnetic MagSafe,
like,
you know, you can take on and take
off,
but I don't think that's possible.
I'm just saying it in my mind,
that would have been cool
because this is kind of a thicker screen,
if you will, to your point, there's a lot that's baked
into the bot the behind of this but wouldn't it be nice if i could just walk up to the base and
then i could just pop off as if i'm like popping off my ipad off of my magic keyboard and then
walk around now i know that that just introduces a lot of other issues like where did you leave
the home view you know where where's the screen but how cool would that be i mean that's something
that you and i do right now right because i mean another example is standby i mean i always take
my iPhone,
in fact, right here in front of me, I've got my little base.
I stick it on there.
And as soon as I stick it in standby mode,
I'm looking at my clock,
my calendar.
It's just a
little display. It's the same thing, but I can pick up my iPhone and go with it. So,
and again,
the home view is just,
it has all these,
you know,
parts of it are like an Apple watch,
parts of it are like an iPhone.
It is parts of it are like this,
parts of it are like a HomePod.
It really does take all of these ideas that Apple has had floating out there and put it into
something that's both brand new,
but also incredibly familiar.
I'm glad you mentioned the standby mode
because that was the other thing that I thought about when I read your article here today.
Some people may be using this as an alarm clock by your bed.
It would be a great way. You know,
we've just been talking about putting it into the center of the household,
like in the kitchen or so.
But, you know,
I have an Anker three-in-one charger next to my bed because when I go to bed at night,
I put my iPhone there so that it can charge,
but it goes into standby mode because that's my alarm clock.
It has the weather. It has my calendar on there and I can flip back and forth.
But you even mentioned here that this home view will go down.
What did you say? A point point oh three net like it will dim itself very low so that you can have one of these even by your household.
To your point, again,
I want to check, you know,
why did the camera go off?
Who's walking outside?
You know, do I want to turn the light on?
hey, it's cold in the house.
I want to, you know, change the smart thermostat.
I mean, I kind of, I didn't really think about it that way
because I don't know that anybody's really been talking about
putting it by your bedside.
But your point today in your article,
maybe that's where I could use one of these.
No, I do.
I have heard people talk about doing that.
It's 0.3 nits, by the way, just to be technical.
Yes,
thank you.
You know, I often think about nits
in terms of how bright something can get.
And the maximum brightness for this is 500 nits.
There are other products that can get brighter than 500 nits.
Don't get me wrong.
This doesn't have HDR or anything else like that.
But 500 nits is going to be more than bright enough, I think, for a kitchen.
But until this week,
the lowest that any Apple products go was some of the newest Apple watches
could get down to one nit, which is really,
really, really dim.
It's very dim.
If you're wearing it while you sleep, you don't want to have anything on your screen.
You want it to be super dim.
This goes like a third of that, 0.3 nits.
So it's incredibly,
incredibly.
So whether it be at your bedside or if it's just sitting there in your kitchen and the lights are off,
I mean, it's going to be just barely, barely,
barely,
barely visible.
In fact, I'll be curious to see if the screen does turn off at times.
I don't know if it does or not.
I mean, since it's plugged in all the time, they probably don't need from a power standpoint to have the screen turn off.
But,
you know, I think one person I list to or I linked to was a chance Miller or Wesley Hilliard.
But somebody was like, you know, I'm ordering three of them.
I want one for my kitchen.
Oh,
yeah.
That was Andrew O'Hara.
I think Andrew O'Hara.
There you go.
Yeah.
I want one for my kitchen.
And I want one for my bedroom and I want one for my office.
And by the way, I can actually see that too for certain office setups,
just to sort of
have it sitting there at all times on your office desk.
That would be interesting.
That would be interesting.
That's good too.
Yeah, this was a great story from Andrew O'Hara.
And he's talking about,
I feel like he does a very good job of kind of going through and
talking about the pros and cons.
But he ends up saying,
I love it.
Oh,
here's the thing I love from his article just quickly since you mentioned it.
I saw this too.
The home view can act like a mirror,
which,
you know,
the kids these days, Jeff,
like that's all my kids do when they want to like brush their hair.
They don't go up to the bathroom.
They just open up the selfie camera on their phone and they look at themselves.
But this now not only can't act as a mirror,
which is what this picture is from Andrew showing,
but it has like a ring light.
It'll light up a ring light around the screen.
And little did I know,
he says this on here.
So this is where rabbit hole I went down this morning.
There's a similar lighting feature available on the Mac.
I did not know that.
So if you go FaceTime on your Mac, your screen,
it will light up around the edges.
Anyway,
I just thought that was cool.
But then that's what this picture is here that he's showing.
And I just,
I think that's brilliant.
I mean, the kids are going to love that, right?
I mean, that's a great way to be able to use your home view.
I mean, you say the kids, I have to admit there, there have been times where I've wanted to
The kids and Jeff.
Okay.
I have put my iPhone in the middle just to look at my face for a second.
You know, I don't know.
I've been there before.
Get the spinach out of your teeth or something.
Yeah,
that's good.
I mean, this would be a $299 mirror,
you know.
A little mirror.
Okay.
So I promise I want to go back to Julie Clover because I thought this was a great article
you linked to that kind of goes through like the other things that we've kind of touched
on that it can do.
Recipe walkthroughs.
I think this is brilliant.
I was just talking about my wife.
Let's talk about that.
Yeah.
So it actually has a special mode for that, which is really nice.
A lot of people find recipes on the internet,
right?
It's got Safari built in, or like maybe you're on your iPhone and you find this recipe for,
you know, I'm going to make, you know, whatever,
a turtle soup.
And so if you just, and by the way, you can do share play.
So like if your iPhone is close to your home view,
you could like share,
like what I'm listening
to a song.
I want to put it over in there.
I'm on a website.
I want to move it over there.
Just like other devices could do.
Right.
So if it senses that what you're showing is a recipe,
we all know that recipe websites
on the internet you know it's nice that they have the recipe but first of all there's all these ads
yeah second of all the first couple of paragraphs is a story about how i was traveling in italy and
i thought about this you know yeah you just want to make the recipe right and so just give me the
recipe it strips all of that out when you click the button or whatever gets into a mode and then
it says here's step one here's step two here's step three and and it's just got you know in big
text brilliant one step at a time you know when you're done with step one you move on to step two
And if step two is to put this in the oven for 15 minutes,
it understands,
hey,
that direction said something about time.
So I'm going to put a timer right here.
And so you can click that timer.
And in fact, frankly, it's a silly thing.
But I mean, because you can buy like a little timer for 10 cents to have in your kitchen.
But the home view is going to be an excellent timer.
It's going to be,
you know, with multiple timers that it can be really big.
And you can have like, this is my egg timer and this is my such and such timer.
So you can have all that stuff in there.
but it would be built into the recipe.
So for people that are interested in having like a little device and people have been using iPads this way for years.
I was going to say, though, that's exactly how I think there's an app called Paprika.
There's, you know, there's dozens of recipe apps and that's exactly what they do, Jeff.
And that's like, I don't know that I could I could sell this in addition to an iPad.
Yeah. In fact, now that I'm saying that out loud,
you're reminding me talking about the iPad.
I said before the Apple Watch came out in 2010.
I think the Apple Watch actually came out in 2015.
It's the iPad that came out in 2015.
iPad did come out.
Correct.
You're right.
But but regardless of people.
So for some people,
this just using recipes in the kitchen is going to be one of the nicest uses of the home view.
That's true. Because it's big.
It parts it out.
So, you know, bravo to Apple for picking out a way to to really make an online recipe as easy to use as possible on this this cute little screen.
So that's gonna be cool. So anyway, going through Julie also mentioned Siri access,
obviously the Apple intelligence that's sort of built in.
And I think you link to the Time article and I've seen others,
you know, where it's like, why didn't Apple do this earlier?
And really,
I've heard a lot of people say we wanted to make sure that the Siri Apple intelligence was built in enough so that it can be useful.
So let's just pause on that.
The rumor is that Apple designed this years ago and they were ready to come out with it about two years ago.
It was ready to go.
And I mean, did they actually make them?
Were they sitting in a warehouse somewhere?
I don't know.
But like all of the decisions on this device had been made two years ago.
And Apple knew that one of the things that would make this product particularly successful
is having a very useful AI so that you could talk to it,
whether you were asking questions
about world knowledge,
you know, like, you know, what's the score of this game?
Or,
you know, what's the price of tea in China?
Whatever you're going to ask it.
Or whether you had questions about your own devices.
And we should talk about privacy,
too.
But they knew that having a really good AI was going to be a big feature of this device.
And they just didn't have it.
They didn't have it two years ago.
And so now that we have the Apple intelligence and the improved Siri,
the rumor is that now
this device is ready.
And I do think that this is going to be an excellent device for all those questions.
Because, I mean, you're in your kitchen.
You're talking to people.
People say something like, you know, what is that?
What was the name of that monument that we saw when we were in St. Louis?
Or what was that?
You know, just those general questions you ask.
You know, when is the show going to be?
know who who are my local sports team going to be playing at three weeks this weekend you can just
ask those questions to it and get the answer um and i think that's going to be useful again could
you use your iphone for it yes but you don't have to take your iphone out this is just this is just
sitting right there she mentions adaptable interface so it can tell when someone is approaching and
parts of the interface will change based on how far away you are from it if someone is across the
room it shows less information and a larger view as the person approaches if you can change the
show that's something new because we just haven't had some kind of like i mean again i don't think
of this is i i don't know why i'm trying to struggle to get over this it's not a portable
device right this is something that sits there and doesn't move and it's just such a weird thing for
me to think of it because it's like i always want to take my devices with me she talks about uh there
are customizable faces and what this is similar to like the apple watch faces exactly now this is
interesting too we don't spend a lot of time on it third-party apps there's no app store for this
Yeah, that's the CarPlay story we were just talking about.
Exactly.
Because it's like, as soon as I thought about this, I know my family,
I will use Apple Music, for example.
But most of the time, the rest of my family all uses Spotify.
So that was my next question,
Jeff.
Am I going to get Spotify to be able to play on this HomeView?
Now,
I feel like Apple would say, well, no, you can get it on your iPhone.
And then you can do like the handoff or play from your iPhone through the HomeView.
But I don't know that I would want that.
I would like to have a Spotify app available for the HomeView.
Spotify works in CarPlay right now.
And for the exact same reason,
it's going to work with HomeView.
So that will work.
Okay, very good.
Very good.
And then lastly, we just touched upon this.
I mentioned this.
The HomeView,
Julie says, has temperature and humidity sensors that can be used in the Home
app.
So apparently,
I guess you could say,
you know,
it could change based on how hot it is or
anything.
But I just think that that's interesting that it can tell me,
even if my,
you know,
my
thermostat may be downstairs,
but if I've got a home view that's upstairs,
maybe it may be a
different temperature or so. Like I like the fact that it's got some of these sensors built in there
as well.
That's, that's not a new feature, by the way. Did you know that current HomePod minis can
also tell you the temperature and humidity too?
Oh, I guess I did not know that.
Exactly.
Oh,
that's great. You want to have sensors in your house doing that.
So,
okay.
Okay.
Let's talk,
you want to talk about the privacy part of it for a second?
Cause I think that's an interesting part
of this. I know we can move on, but there's just so much because it's such an interesting brand
new product but yes please talk about privacy because we're talking about and i don't know if
this is where you're going or not but we're talking about multiple people in a family going up and
we'll get to this video here in just a minute because i've got issues with it where the son
it's like the daughter was using it and then she gets up and moves and then the son tries to look
at this a home view screen to like see who she was talking with or like her boyfriend's name or
whatever and it goes blank because it now recognizes that it's somebody else now there's a lot more to
the privacy thing I know you're going to get into,
but that was one of the takeaways that I had about
what Apple is focused on here.
Yeah.
A device like this is very useful if it can give you
information personal to you, like my calendar,
my text messages,
my whatever.
But because this is a
device that's shared in a home,
Apple does not want to give up your privacy.
And I mean,
admittedly, everybody's in your same home. So to a certain degree, you would hope that you are,
you know, a little bit more familiar with each other than it might be like in an office environment.
But even so,
you know,
your stuff is yours.
And so the way it works is that,
and it uses the camera to look and see who you are by recognizing your face.
Now, this is not face ID because remember face ID uses a camera to recognize you,
but it is so sophisticated that with face ID,
if somebody were to try to like,
you know, use incredibly nice Hollywood,
you know,
makeup to make good doctors like you,
or for that matter, print out a picture of you and hold up, hold up a picture of you to it.
Face ID, you cannot fool face ID,
right?
This,
however,
I will be curious,
you know, that brother in the video,
if he printed out a picture of his sister
and held up that picture,
because it's not face ID,
it's just a simple camera recognition.
He would do that,
I can tell.
But the way it works is if it thinks it's your face
and if your iPhone is in the same house,
so, you know, I'm at work,
it's never gonna work.
But if I'm home,
so it knows that I'm home
and I'm in the house and it thinks it's my face,
then it's gonna say, okay, I'm pretty sure this is Jeff.
So I'm going to go ahead and allow him to ask questions and see his personal calendar, blah, blah.
But then when I walk away and my wife walks up or my kid walks up or something like that,
it would then change to them.
So it's a nice way to have multiple users.
And that's the example of what you said that in the promo video where,
you know, the daughter uses it to see her text messages with the boyfriend.
And as soon as the son gets over there,
it automatically goes away because her face is no longer within the view of the screen.
So if you're looking at the screen, you can get your personal information.
If you're not looking at the screen, you can't.
Now, what I don't know is what if I'm not looking at the screen,
but I'm just in the
kitchen and I just say out loud,
hey,
you know who,
you know,
what time am I meeting
with Brett for dinner tonight?
Is it going to say, well,
Jeff's not looking at the screen,
but I know it's Jeff because
his iPhone's in the house.
And so maybe it will, maybe it will say that out loud, but not show it on the screen.
I don't know.
I have questions about how this is going to all work,
but I do have trust because Apple
privacy is so important to them that I'm sure that they have,
they've at least come up with
the best solutions.
Not that it can't be tweaked in the future,
but,
you know,
there's certainly
a lot more privacy focused than many other companies that make competing devices.
Right,
right.
Good points. Good points.
We probably need to move on because I think we're
just so excited.
You know, again, I know you're excited because you're excited for this product.
I don't know that I'm so excited for what it is.
I mean, I feel like I've got some concerns,
but to your point, you've said it several times. We got to wait and see how this is going to go.
But I'm just excited the fact that it is something that's brand new that we haven't seen from Apple.
It's a new product on there.
Now,
just quickly,
before we go on, we'll come back to this video here,
which I know you link to and everybody's been talking about it.
I feel like I've seen two sides of the fence over the Internet over this past week.
Some like you are pretty happy with this video that Apple released.
There's just as many people, I feel like, that are just like almost disgusted with this video.
Like they it's so it's such a chaotic video.
and you have to watch it.
I'm not going to play it here and everything right now,
but it's crazy because I think the reason I'm uncomfortable with it
is because it's so real.
It's just a family going nuts in the morning
and people running around and interacting with Siri.
I mean, and lots of people have been talking about this,
interacting with the Home View.
I think Apple nailed it from a realistic standpoint,
but I got to tell you,
I don't know.
So first of all, it feels uncharacteristically Apple to me,
like the whole video,
the chaoticness of it, I guess, even though it's real.
Like I do believe it's real.
The second thing is my biggest beef about this, Jeff,
is it looks fantastic, that home view,
but nobody trips over the cord.
That's the biggest thing.
It's like everything they showed this, there's no cord in the way.
It's like a beautiful thing.
Like somebody has drilled a hole up through a table in the granite countertop,
wherever this home view is sitting.
And there's no core that's extending halfway across the kitchen that people are going to trip over and pull it off the table.
And every time I see a picture of this thing,
it just irks me.
It's like,
that's not real.
There's no battery in the base of this.
You have to have a USB-C core, which I'm glad that it was USB-C because that means I think somebody on one of these articles you linked to pointed out that that means a lot of third-party developers can add things to it.
But that's a whole core,
Jeff,
that you've got to plug in.
So in other words, you can't just like turn on that video like the kids are turning it back and forth,
and you can turn it, and you can swivel it back and forth a little bit, not on the base.
But it's like you're not going to be able to do that that easy because that core is going to get in the way.
Okay, you go.
Let me defend that. That's my piece,
please.
The I you know, people are like, oh, they drilled a hole in the table.
No, actually, if you look in the video, what it actually is, is something that I see all the time.
We have them in my office built into tables the time at my house.
My wife has got like a desk downstairs.
It's got this built in.
People will often build these little I think it's called like a grommet or something like that,
that it's like a little it's a circle.
And like it's got this little plastic thing in it. That's got a tiny little to go through.
And you take that out and you can put your adapter down and you put it back on.
and all that goes through is the cord.
This type of technology has been around for a long time.
Now,
do most people's kitchen counters,
like if you have an island in your kitchen,
do you already have a cutout for putting a cord in?
I have no idea.
I don't know how it was designed.
But I don't think, I mean, to say that nobody in the world
has anything like has a hole in a table.
Well, that's actually not true
because there are people who sometimes have that
for the particular reason,
because you want to have something you can plug in
on a desk or on a table,
but you don't want to have a cord off on the side.
So, you know,
some people have it.
Now, but again,
is Apple going to show the perfect example of the busy family?
Everybody's using it.
I mean, as some people said in the example,
the daughter is doing text messages with her
boyfriend on this device.
Right.
Wouldn't the daughter probably use her iPhone for that so that it's even more private?
I would think so.
Look, let's just say we know it's just a commercial.
We know that they're exaggerating the uses.
But I actually thought that,
you know, the typical,
the video that I linked at the end
of my post today is more of a traditional Apple video of like, here's the features of the home.
Yes, I see that. Yeah.
The chaotic family video,
I actually liked it because it was Apple trying
to show an example of how a busy family might use it. Of course, they're going to try to squeeze as
many examples in at once. And they did because it's an ad.
But I actually thought it was nicely
done. I did not cringe from the ad. I actually smiled from the ad.
And when it when it showed
the scenario of a busy family trying to get out of the house in the morning,
I'm like,
been there,
done that.
So for me, it was good.
But again,
I have heard just, and I've heard many people on
the internet say,
Oh, I love this video.
And I've heard many people on the internet saying,
I hate this video, but whatever,
I guess at least we're talking about it. At least we're talking.
That's true.
That's true.
Okay.
So that's my beef. It's like, you've still got to have a cord. So as
pretty as it looks,
people remember, there's going to be a cord stretching across something,
maybe with one of Jeff's comments,
cramming something.
I mean,
you're, you're right.
There
that I can already tell under the cabinets where this would fit.
But it still just irks me.
It's like,
OK, there's going to be a court somewhere and somebody's going to trip over that.
OK, quickly now, because I know we spend a lot of time on this home view.
Let's go through.
I want you to talk about what should we go to?
Well,
you know what?
I don't have this in the list, but let's just talk about the home collection,
because I feel
like,
first of all, it just really got some short strip because the home view is taking
over the headlines everywhere.
But we mentioned this last week because this was part of the rumors.
And this home collection to me looks pretty interesting because I don't know that I've seen a lot of people put two and two together that if you have a home view,
I believe it's going to work very well with these LG and what is the Schneider electric devices for the lock and for the temperature sensor and for the thermostat, for example,
and the in the outdoor and the indoor cameras.
I feel like the home view is going to work very well with these.
And so people should,
you know,
perk up and look at them.
Yeah. I mean, if you get a home view in your house,
you're going to be thinking,
oh, well, now I'm going to be moving more into the smart house.
Like what camera should I get?
Or what thermometer should I get?
And Apple's now answering that question. You can get whatever you want. You know, if you want to get something from Eufy, that's fine.
But if you want something that Apple is saying it's going to work perfectly well, you don't have to worry about, you know, so many of these apps,
you need to get like the special manufacturer's app for controlling the such and such.
And many times those apps are poorly made and everything else.
Apple's like, no, no, no.
If it's part of the Apple Home collection,
just use the Apple Home app.
It's going to pair instantly.
It's going to work well.
It's not going to have its own app.
The device itself is going to have a very clean and elegant design.
It's not going to have ugly stickers and logos and everything else on it.
And so it's a nice way to say,
we know that these are good to buy.
You can feel comfortable that if you buy these,
you're going to be happy.
Now,
are some people going to want to buy the security camera from Eufy or from a different company because it's got additional features?
Absolutely.
That's tough, too.
But if you want to get something that's going to be just a nice,
safe purchase,
this is it.
And I suspect that in the future,
when I go to buy the next XYZ device,
whatever that's going to be, I'm going to at least think about, you know, if I'm going to get a smart lock from my door,
maybe the best smart lock to get is the LG one.
Because I know it's going to work perfectly with all of my Apple devices.
and so my i might get it instead of the one from what's that other company schlag or the other
exactly schneider so yeah well that's it schneider's the one has it but my schlag is the company that
oh i see what you're saying one of those smart smart because the newest the newest smart locks
for example support it was ultra wideband whatever so as you walk up to it it knows that you're
walking up and it unlocks the door automatically for you and this lg lock will do that as well
okay we'll see but that's the caveat like if i use something that's not one of these new devices
then it probably comes with an app and it may not work with a home kit so first of all you got to
make sure that whatever you do purchase works with home kit and to me the eufy cameras that you and i
both use is a good example could i access the eufy cameras through the home app i think i can do i
ever do that absolutely not because the eufy app is so much better and here's the thing though jeff
at at this point in time i don't think i can get the eufy app on the home view and so what am i to
do like i don't want to kind of downgrade to that home app if it's not going to give me as many
options or feature sets with that now i think that's going to change there is no app store
right now for the home view but i feel like that will change and there will be some because you
know when the iphone first launched there was no there was no app store for the iphone i think this
is just apple's first iteration of this and that will that will continue to change um as we go
through but that's the point that i'm saying like i already have cameras i don't want to go and rebuy
new cameras now just because they're going to work better with home kit the next time that i do want
a camera though then yes i'm totally with you i'm probably going to look at these lg because they do
work with the home kit and whether or not even have a home view in other words i'm i'm thrilled
that finally apple is getting more into this smart home capacity um more than just having a home app
that can do a few things i feel like this is just the beginning of this bigger kind of a of a of a
scenario and environment that apple is supporting from the smart home so that's a much bigger picture
observation that I'm making right there,
but that does get me excited.
I have gone through two generations of Eufy cameras at my house.
When I got the first generation of
Eufy camera many years ago, I chose to enable it with HomeKit,
which meant that I could see the
cameras from the Home app.
And I learned after a couple of years that it really didn't matter
because it was just as easy for me to look at them on my Eufy app as the Home app.
The only
advantage that I saw of HomeKit support was that if I was on my Apple TV,
because there's not a
Eufy app for the Apple TV,
that on my Apple TV, I'm sitting there watching TV,
I could see my
camera.
But I was like, you know, I,
the number of times that I do that is so infrequent that when
I upgraded to my,
my,
my current Eufy cameras, which are the same model that you have,
I'm like,
you know what?
I'm not going to even enable HomeKit because if you enable HomeKit, it degrades the
quality of the video a little bit. I'm just going to keep it on the full, what is it? 2K,
whatever
quality and just use your UFI app.
Once I get the home view,
I'm going to,
for the first time,
I'm going to have a situation where,
gosh, it would be nice to have my UFI cameras on a home
kit environment.
And so I don't know what I'm going to do.
My hope is that UFI itself recognizes this
and they come out with some solution. I mean, all they need to do is come out with a CarPlay app,
you know, and then we're done,
but we'll see.
So it sounds so weird. It's a question.
Yeah. But I
know exactly what you're talking about uh okay we're gonna move on i mean i know we've been
talking about this and we can continue to talk about it but now i'm i'm excited um that you know
in the next month or so because i don't think the home view is going to be out until november 13th
i believe so we've almost got a whole month now before i mean you can pre-order it now but you're
not going to get it right you're not going to get yours until november hopefully that wasn't as
delayed as now that one i'm supposedly getting on when a day's a day comes out on november 13th okay
So we'll be talking about that a lot more.
But before we go on, you mentioned the HomePods.
And we talk about the HomePod Minis and the HomePods here on this podcast just because you have them.
You've liked them.
They did announce the HomePod Mini 2,
correct?
At this same event.
You had one little article that you linked to.
I just want to give you an opportunity to talk a little bit about it.
The HomePod Mini versus the HomePod Mini 2 Buyer's Guide.
This is from HartleyCharleton at MacRumors.com.
I know that you have some questions about how your current HomePod is going to work when we have updates with maybe some of these HomePod minis, too.
I don't know how worried you are about that or concerned,
but how are they going to work even with the home view once you get that is another big question that I have, too.
Yeah.
If you're looking to get a HomePod mini for your home, well, of course,
get the HomePod mini,
too, because it's the newest version.
And, you know, it has a couple of differences.
Like, it comes in some different colors,
although I think they took away a color, too.
I think the old one used to have, like, an orange version.
This one doesn't have that.
Okay.
But regardless,
it's got five different colors.
So there's some new colors there.
It has slightly upgraded internals, which is going to be useful for a reason I'll talk about in a second.
The only real,
as I see it,
there's only two features that are of any consequence.
One of them, which is a far less consequence,
is that if you have,
if you want to use HomePods for your TV area,
you can already right now set up two HomePods, a stereo.
And it tries to simulate,
you know, surround sound through two.
But a better way to get surround sound is to have four so that you have two in front of you and two behind you.
Right.
And so that is something that you can do if you have the newest Apple TV, which we're going to talk about in a second.
And if you have these new HomePod Mini 2s,
then you can set up four of them and then you can actually have a surround experience.
But again,
the number of people that are going to do that is very, very tiny.
So the only really significant new feature of the HomePod Mini 2 is that it supports the new Apple Intelligence Siri AI.
And we talked about that on our podcast last week that, you know, I was asking a general
question about like a concert and I asked it out loud.
And my HomePod mini original one said, I can't tell you the answer, Jeff.
Do you want me to show you something on your iPhone?
I'm like,
thank you for being so ridiculously unhelpful.
This new model will actually do it correctly.
So that would be, you know,
if you want to,
that's going to be nice.
And that way you can just be in the middle of your living room and, you know, you can
just say out loud a question and it will answer the question.
So that's going to be a nice advantage.
And it's a reason people would want the HomePod Mini 2.
Now, curiously,
that one feature,
which is like the whole reason somebody would want it,
they say it's not going to be available when it first comes out.
Hopefully it won't, you know, just a week or two.
I don't know how long it's going to be.
But at some point after the HomePod Mini 2 comes out,
Siri AI will be added to it,
and then it will be what it's meant to be.
So if you're looking to get a new HomePod, get it.
Is it worth upgrading your current HomePod Mini to a new one?
I don't know.
But I mean, I leave that,
you know, if you want to have even more Siri AI,
maybe so.
last big announcement from this week a new apple tv the fourth generation um that so you start off
your post on april 2021 apple introduced the apple tv 4k second generation that's the one that i know
in 22 october 2022 apple announced the apple tv third generation so now what they did this week is
the Apple TV 4K fourth generation.
Bigger, faster,
maybe not bigger,
faster,
better things.
Now,
am I correct?
I'll let you talk about this because the bigger announcement that I thought came out of this
was that it was going to support Siri AI,
Apple intelligence,
but not yet.
Is that right?
Yeah.
Well, I mean, the thing is the Siri AI part that it adds, I mean, I'm thrilled that it
has it,
but you don't need to buy a new Apple TV to get that as long as you have the one
the one that I purchased in 2021 or the one that came out in 2022,
they're going to have Siri AI
on Apple TV as well.
Okay. So,
um,
so there's some,
look,
here's,
let me jump to the end.
If you already own an Apple TV,
that's at least, you know,
five, six years old, you don't need to
get anything new. But if you're looking to get a new one, if you were buying one for somebody else,
or if you've never owned an Apple TV before,
and now you're going to finally buy one,
well,
then yeah, this is the model to get,
um,
because it supports all the features,
but in terms of
comparing it to what's already out there.
It's going to be a little bit faster,
but I don't think
that that really matters because it's not like clicking the left, right up,
down buttons is all
that slow right now.
So,
but I mean, it's a little bit faster, whatever it's worth.
It has, it has
built in long range microphones on it.
And so what that means is if you don't own like you, Brett,
you don't own HomePod minis, right?
So if you wanted to just be in your living room and speak
out into the air,
Hey,
you know, you know who such and such your current Apple TV cannot hear you,
right?
That's right. But this one does have a microphone on it. So it would be able to hear you.
Although I guess the TV has got to be on too,
for it to give you a response.
But so that's,
that's one little advantage.
Is it a big advantage?
No.
And in fact, even your Apple TV,
if you want to talk to it right now,
you have the Siri remote,
right? So you just hold down that
button on the side of it. And that's how you do that.
So if you have the remote in your hand,
you don't even need that new microphone feature.
But if you don't have the remote in your hand,
that's what you think of.
And then the only other feature is the one that I mentioned before that
if you want to use surround sound with HomePod Minis,
you have to have both,
you know, a new
HomePod Mini 2,
and then also you need to have this new Apple TV.
So it's a very minor upgrade.
In fact, perhaps the biggest thing is the price,
because not that many years ago,
you could get an
Apple TV for not much more than $100.
And then like earlier this year, when Apple raised all of its
prices because the RAM shortages,
they raised the Apple TV to like either 200 or 250,
depending upon
on the model.
And now there's only one model of Apple TV and it's $299.
You know, you were just
saying that $299 seems like a great price for the home view,
but that same price for the Apple TV.
Wow.
But the thing is,
and Apple knows this,
they,
it's like they have a monopoly because they have
a monopoly on a good device because all the other devices,
you know, the Apple,
the Amazon Fire
sticks and the Google devices and stuff like that,
they've got, they've got some power experiences.
They've got built-in ads and they don't work very well and blah, blah, blah.
So it's like,
if you want to have a nice device really for your TV,
this is the one and only option.
And so people know that, you know, Apple knows that they don't have any competition.
And so I guess they're just going to charge a little bit more for it and get, make the money
that they can.
So I'm a little,
I mean,
it would be nicer if the price was cheaper because I feel
Like $299 is a lot.
And yet the reality is if I had to buy one,
I would absolutely get this because I'm not going to go out there and get an Amazon Fire Stick with all the ads and everything else built into it.
Of course, I'm going to get something that's made to work with the Apple environment that's got a clean interface.
So anyway.
I think you may have overlooked the biggest benefit here.
Has this been available before?
You can now play a sound on the remote to locate it?
I didn't mention that is that that is,
yes, that is part of this new device,
but you don't have to
buy a new Apple TV for this. Like your current Apple TV,
you can just buy a new remote.
And I,
a very long time ago, I remember Apple came out with their new Siri remote and people were buying
just the, just the Siri remote.
And the same is true here.
So if you,
if you find that you ever
lose your remote,
it now has find my support built in.
And I talk in my post today about some
of the technical ways that they do it,
but the bottom,
all that you really need to know is that
if you can't find the remote,
you can now use your iPhone to get, you know, you're, you're getting
closer,
you're getting farther away to find it.
And,
or you could like,
you know, say play a sound
and it will start to little chirp and you can just use your ears.
Oh,
I can hear where it is.
Somebody must've left it under the cushions. I'm going to walk over to the kitchen or it's under
the couch cushions.
So, um,
I,
I personally,
I don't have small kids in my house anymore.
So I
don't,
I don't have a problem with people hiding the remote or losing the remote,
but if losing
the remote is an issue for you,
well, then get the new remote.
You don't have to get the whole
new Apple TV.
You can just buy the remote separately for like 59 bucks to get that feature.
We have been going long,
so we're not going to do in the know today,
but I would like to just
give you a couple more minutes to talk about what we'll call this in the know. We'll use this as
Jeff's gadget today.
You did another review. You were busy this week.
This is a review of a device
from 12 South. We've talked about this company many times. It's a very small company that does
very nice beautiful high-end gadgets and products and support uh accessories for uh apple products
this i guess is new they've actually had the airfly for a long time which is the little bluetooth
receiver a lot of people use it in airplanes so you can share audio for example or even if there's
not bluetooth you can plug it in and you can have it bluetooth fantastic i don't even have one but
I keep thinking I need one,
but they released the AirFly Drive from 12 South that now you can give
your car wireless CarPlay. So I guess you explain it. If your car has CarPlay,
typically you plug it
in. I prefer plugging it in if at all possible because I feel like it's faster.
But I do have a
car that supports Bluetooth CarPlay,
and that is fantastic.
But I guess if you don't have a car
that supports Bluetooth CarPlay,
that's what the AirFly Drive can do for you.
Exactly.
You know,
the original AirFly was made that if you're on an airplane and you want to watch like that little
entertainment screen in the back of the front of you,
it's got like a little plug to plug a
headphone into.
And so many people are like, I don't even have a corded headphone and I don't
want to use the one that the AirFly gives you for free.
So I want to use my AirPods with it.
And so you could stick the little AirFly into the microphone port and it creates Bluetooth so that
you can then connect to it with your AirPods. So that's the original AirFly.
This is the same idea.
If you have only wired CarPlay in your car,
so if you don't have a newer car that has wireless,
like yours apparently does,
but if you want to be able to have a wireless experience,
all you do is stick this tiny little device,
and it's just so tiny.
It just sticks into that USB port,
and then you're done.
And then, you know, it basically gives you wireless CarPlay.
And I tell you what, I've been using it for,
I don't know, a week or two now,
and I really like it.
I mean, I get in my car,
and I just start driving.
I don't have to take out my iPhone,
plug it into the cord,
find a place to stick my iPhone
in the cup holder so that it's not going to, you know, whatever.
I just get,
and then it's even nicer when I get out of my car, I just turn off the car
and leave and I'm just done.
I don't have to disconnect anything.
I mean,
am I saving much time in my day?
No,
but it's like every single time I get in and out of my car,
it's a nice little convenience.
Now, what do you give up?
What you give up is number one,
you're not charging your iPhone while you're in your
car.
And so if you're taking like a cross-country trip where you want to charge your iPhone and you're using cellular.
So,
yeah, of course, I'm going to plug it in for a long cross-country trip.
But if I'm just going back and forth to work at the grocery store or whatever,
you know, that 10, 15 minutes of charging my iPhone,
my iPhone is going to be fine.
I don't need the power.
But, you know, if you do,
that's up to you.
Then don't use this product.
And then second of all,
there is – and you mentioned this before, Brett.
You said you feel like it's the fastest possible way to use CarPlay is with a cord.
And that's still true.
So I have noticed that like when I,
when I, if I'm listening to a podcast and they have an ad,
I want to skip through when I click that,
that fast forward button with wired car play,
it's instantaneous with this device.
It's like, I don't know,
a quarter of a second or I mean,
it's not like it's long.
Just enough to be annoying.
For me,
it's not, it's not annoying,
but it's, I guess if you, if you, if you notice it, you can notice it.
And so, so it's up to you.
So if you don't care about that slight delay and it's really slight,
don't get me wrong.
But if you don't care about the slight delay and if you don't care about the power,
it's
actually a very, very nice experience.
And if you do care about it, well, then just stick with what you have now.
But it's not a very expensive product.
I mean, how much did I spend for it?
$39.99.
$39.
Which is great from Airfly.
That's amazing.
It's cheap enough that I'm like, if I buy it and I don't like it, well, whatever.
It's not a big deal.
But I tell you what, I really do like it.
It makes me happy every single time I get in my car.
And so I give it a big thumbs up.
Now,
real quick,
did you mention that?
Is this a USB-A plug that plugs in?
Is that the...
Oh, it has an adapter as well for USB-C on there.
Does your car have USB-C or does your car have USB?
I think it has both.
A lot of modern day cars have both.
I have both.
But if I'm plugging mine in, I try to go with the USB-C if at all possible.
Okay.
My car doesn't even have a USB-C option because it's an older car.
It just has regular USB.
So this just plugs right in.
If your car only has USB-C,
if it only has USB-C,
well, then you can still use this.
product because it comes with a little adapter.
And those adapters are,
you know, you can get a
bunch of those.
AirFly Drive.
Okay,
well, that'll be our in the know, because I think that's a
nifty little gadget that I frankly,
I mean, first of all, it's from 12 South.
So automatically,
they've got my vote. Good quality. Second of all,
this is fantastic to be able to do,
especially if you've got an older car.
In fact,
I might even get one of these for
both my kids have older cars,
you know, used cars,
and they love CarPlay, but they don't even they
don't have the ability to even use this but this would be a perfect opportunity to give them that
okay lots to talk about we'll have a lot more to talk about even next week because people start to
get the home view although that's going to be a month away like i don't know there's going to be
this in-between time now that people might be getting iphone duos within the next week a week
yeah yeah so in a couple of weeks we'll have a lot more hands-on people talking about the iphone duo
and that's i mean and frankly to me the most exciting thing i'm i'm looking forward to is the
exit breakdown,
right?
Everybody looks forward to that because they want to see exactly what's
going on inside.
All right. Thanks for hanging with us, everybody.
We appreciate it.
Jeff,
we'll talk with you next week.
Thanks, Brett. Bye-bye, everybody.
